Best time to go
The most comfortable months are generally October to April, when daytime temperatures in Middle Egypt are milder and outdoor walking is easier. Summer can be very hot, so early morning is usually the best time to visit. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours and visitor flow may change, so checking before travel is recommended.
02 Overview
A first look
Beni Hasan is a cemetery of provincial nomarch tombs from the Middle Kingdom (c.2055–1650 BCE). The best-known tomb is Khnumhotep II (BH3), famed for its painted scenes of daily life and foreign traders.
Background
The facts
Beni Hassan is a rock-cut cemetery on the east bank of the Nile near Minya in Middle Egypt. The tombs date mainly to the 11th and 12th Dynasties of the Middle Kingdom, roughly the early second millennium BCE, and are valued for their painted wall scenes and autobiographical inscriptions.
The site consists of tombs cut into the limestone cliffs above the Nile Valley. Several of the principal decorated tombs preserve scenes showing hunting, wrestling, agriculture, boat processions, and daily work, along with inscriptions identifying local officials and administrative titles. These images are important for understanding provincial life outside the royal courts of ancient Egypt.
An entry ticket grants admission to the tomb cemetery and the principal decorated tombs, subject to site opening rules and any conservation closures. Visitor access can vary by season and preservation status, so the number of tombs open at any given time may change without notice.
The walk through the cemetery involves uneven ground and cliffside paths. Seasonal visibility across the Nile Valley may be clear in cooler months, while haze can reduce long-distance views during warmer periods.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 How long does a visit to Beni Hassan take?
Allow 45–90 minutes to see the principal tombs at Beni Hassan. Time depends on how many tombs you enter and how much the guide pauses for paintings and inscriptions. Heat and light levels slow visits–early morning is cooler and quieter. Our Egyptologists typically plan 60–75 minutes for a private guided stop including walk time to the cliff tombs. -
02 Is Beni Hassan accessible for wheelchairs?
Beni Hassan is not fully wheelchair-accessible; tombs are cut into rock with uneven stone ramps and low thresholds. There are steep approaches, loose sand and narrow doorways inside the burial chambers. The site has limited accessible facilities and no full ramps into most tombs. We can arrange a close viewpoint and assist with transfers, but entry into most tomb interiors will be difficult for wheelchair users. -
03 Can I take photographs inside the tombs?
Photography is usually permitted inside the tombs but flash and tripods are often prohibited. Restrictions exist for conservation reasons–ancient pigments are fragile and staff may limit close access. If you need a formal photo permit we can check current site rules beforehand. Please remain at a respectful distance from painted surfaces and follow our guide's instructions. -
04 What should I wear for a visit to Beni Hassan?
Wear lightweight, sun-protective clothing and sturdy shoes for uneven rock and sandy paths. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and at least one litre of water per person for a short visit. Dress conservatively out of respect for local communities; temples and mosques nearby expect modest dress. Expect limited shade at midday and bring layers for cooler mornings. -
05 How do I get to Beni Hassan from Minya or Cairo?
Beni Hassan is on the east bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt near Minya and requires a private car or organised transfer to reach. We arrange private transfers rather than large coach groups so we can time the visit for cooler hours and fewer visitors. From Minya it is a straightforward road transfer; from Cairo it is a long day and we recommend an overnight stop en route. Road and weather conditions affect travel time, so we confirm timings the day before. -
06 Which tombs at Beni Hassan should I prioritise?
Prioritise the tomb of Khnumhotep II and the larger nomarch tombs with painted scenes. Khnumhotep II's tomb contains painted scenes of daily life and foreign traders and is a key example of Middle Kingdom provincial art. Many other tombs show hunting, warfare and funerary rites but colours are fading and lighting is low. Our Egyptologists focus on iconography and inscriptions to bring the scenes to life.

AswanAbu Simbel Temples, Aswan
Abu Simbel lies about 280 km south of Aswan and is reached by a 40‑minute flight or a 3.5–4 hour road transfer. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange private early flights and timed private‑car arrivals so clients avoid coach crowds and the hottest hours. The twin sites are the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari, moved to higher ground between 1964 and 1968 during an international relocation campaign and included in the Nubian Monuments UNESCO listing. Trade‑offs: a same‑day return requires an early start and either a long road journey or a small‑plane seat; shade is limited on the forecourt.
AswanAbu Simbel Temples – Sun Festival (22 Feb / 22 Oct)
See the twice-yearly solar alignment at Abu Simbel on 22 February or 22 October when sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary. The twin rock temples were carved for Ramses II and honour Amun‑Re and Ra. They were moved in 1964–1968 and form part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae'. Abu Simbel is approximately 280 km south of Aswan (about 3.5 hours by road). We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can arrange timed-entry tickets, private road transfers and an Egyptologist briefing when available. Unlike same-day coach runs, we recommend an overnight in Aswan to avoid very early road departures and rushed visits; expect limited shade at the forecourt and large crowds on festival dates.
CairoAl-Moez Street Entry Ticket
Al-Moez Street is a medieval Cairo thoroughfare lined with Fatimid and Mamluk-era monuments, gates and historic façades. This admission grants access to the pedestrianised street and its visible monuments, including views toward Bab Zuweila and the Mosque of Al-Hakim. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange the ticket and send it to you by email as a PDF after booking. Unlike a museum admission, the street is an open historic quarter rather than a single indoor site, so visiting times are flexible but subject to seasonal opening hours and special events.
