Get your bearings

What Giza actually is

Giza is where Cairo stops and the desert — and the ancient world — begins. The plateau on the city's western edge holds the three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx crouched below them, and, since 2024, the Grand Egyptian Museum on the rise above. It's the single most concentrated patch of wonder in Egypt, and it's twenty minutes from a working modern city.

Technically a governorate of its own, Giza is part of Greater Cairo for any traveller — most people stay in Cairo and come here for a day. The Great Pyramid is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, and the only one you can climb inside; the GEM next door now holds the complete Tutankhamun collection.

What you're really here to see

The landmarks that make Giza

The Great Pyramid of Khufu on the Giza plateau 01

The Great Pyramid of Khufu

The oldest and largest of the three, and the last of the Seven Wonders left standing. Built around 2560 BC, it was the tallest structure on earth for almost four thousand years. The interior passage to the King's Chamber is a separate ticket worth taking.

Go at opening

The Great Sphinx of Giza with a pyramid behind 02

The Great Sphinx

A lion's body and a pharaoh's face carved from a single ridge of limestone, facing the sunrise for four and a half thousand years. Smaller than the photos suggest, and all the more human for it — stand at the viewing terrace early, before the haze.

30 minutes

The grand staircase of the Grand Egyptian Museum with the Pyramids beyond 03

The Grand Egyptian Museum

On the plateau within sight of the pyramids, the largest museum devoted to a single civilisation anywhere. Its grand staircase climbs towards a window framing the pyramids themselves, and the Tutankhamun galleries show all 5,000-plus objects from his tomb together for the first time.

Half to full day

Time to allow

How many days in Giza?

Giza is a day from Cairo — but how full a day depends on the museum.

Half day The pyramids

The three pyramids, the Sphinx and a panorama stop — the classic early-morning circuit before the heat.

Full day Plateau + GEM

Add the Grand Egyptian Museum next door; together they fill a comfortable day with lunch in between.

+ interior Go inside

Add the climb into the Great Pyramid's King's Chamber — a steep, airless crawl up a bare granite passage, on a separate timed ticket.

Part of Cairo Where to base

Stay in Cairo (Giza-side hotels wake you to a pyramid view) and treat the plateau as a guided half or full day.

Where it fits

Giza in your itinerary

Giza is the centrepiece of a Cairo stay — and the opening act of almost every Egypt holiday.

Within Cairo

Twenty to thirty minutes from downtown Cairo and 45 from the airport — part of the city, not a separate trip.

Add Saqqara

Pair the plateau with the Step Pyramid and Memphis, half an hour south, for the full pyramid story.

Then fly south

Most travellers do Giza first, then fly to Luxor for the Valley of the Kings and a Nile cruise.

Sound & light

The evening show lights the pyramids and the Sphinx — a relaxed way to see them after dark.

3-Day Cairo: Giza, Egyptian Museum & Old Cairo

3-Day Cairo: Giza, Egyptian Museum & Old Cairo

A three-day private Cairo itinerary visiting the Giza Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and Old Cairo with private transport and an English-speaking Egyptologist. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we don't run group-bus tours; all site visits and transfers are private. Day one focuses on the Giza Plateau (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure) with a sunrise or early-morning option to avoid crowds. Day two covers the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir area; day three visits Coptic and Islamic Cairo including the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Unlike cruise-ship day trips, two nights in Cairo let you schedule Giza at dawn and a calmer afternoon for the Museum. Standard site fees are included; the Khufu pyramid interior, premium tombs (Tutankhamun/Seti I) and gratuities are excluded. Expect early starts, busy sites and limited shade at Giza; modest dress is required for mosques.

Pyramids Park Hotel, Giza

Pyramids Park Hotel, Giza

Pyramids Park Hotel sits on the western edge of the Giza Plateau with views of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we arrange private transfers, Pyramid-view rooms and early-access starts to the Giza Plateau to avoid midday heat. We do not run coach-group check-ins; most guests take our private car at dawn for an uninterrupted visit. Unlike hotels in central Cairo, staying here saves a cross-city taxi ride when visiting the Pyramids. Honest trade-offs: traffic and security vehicle movement can be audible at night, and Pyramid-view rooms are limited – book early.

Kemet Pyramids View Hotel, Cairo

Kemet Pyramids View Hotel, Cairo

Kemet Pyramids View Hotel sits within easy reach of the Giza Plateau and offers rooftop views of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. We favour this hotel for short stays when proximity to the Pyramids matters more than extensive resort facilities. Unlike larger five-star Pyramid hotels, Kemet is compact; Pyramid-view rooms are limited and usually charged at a supplement. Expect modest room sizes, occasional street noise and a busy rooftop at sunset. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange private transfers, Pyramid-view room requests and early check-in where possible.

Karnak Temple Sound & Light Show, Luxor

Karnak Temple Sound & Light Show, Luxor

The Karnak Temple Sound & Light Show is an evening performance in the Karnak precinct that narrates the site's pharaonic phases. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can arrange hotel pickups and tickets on request. Our Egyptologists often recommend the show as an evening complement to a daytime visit; we don’t bundle it into daytime tours because we prefer you to see the Hypostyle Hall in daylight first. Unlike mass-coach excursions, our evening transfers aim to limit late-night waiting. Note: the show is outdoors, seating is basic, and the recorded narration and volume vary between performances.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis – Day Tour

Visit the Giza Pyramids (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure), the Great Sphinx, Saqqara’s Step Pyramid of Djoser and the open‑air museum at Memphis in one day. We run this as a private day tour in a chauffeur‑driven car rather than a large coach, which gives flexible time at each site. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologists explain inscriptions, funerary architecture and the UNESCO‑listed Memphis and Necropolis complex. Standard site entrances are included; pyramid interior tickets (Khufu/Khafre), premium tombs and gratuities are excluded. Expect limited shade on the Giza Plateau and uneven stone underfoot at Saqqara.

Memphis, Sakkara & Dahshur (including Unas Pyramid)

This half-day excursion covers Memphis, the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Sakkara, Dahshur and the Unas Pyramid with commentary from our Cairo Egyptologists. We don't rush Sakkara: expect two to three hours at the Step Pyramid complex rather than a brief roadside stop. Unlike Giza-only itineraries, the route includes Dahshur's Bent and Red Pyramids and the Unas Pyramid's Pyramid Texts. Standard site entrance fees are included; optional pyramid interiors and premium tombs are excluded. We recommend a morning start to avoid midday heat; expect walking on uneven ancient stone and limited shade at Dahshur. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we provide a private air-conditioned car and a licensed Egyptologist.

Best time to visit

When to go to Giza

An exposed desert plateau — the season and the time of day both matter.

October–April · best

Warm days and clear light on the stone (20–28°C) — winter sun five hours from the UK. It's peak season, so arrive at opening to beat both the heat and the coaches.

May–September · hot

35–40°C with little shade on the plateau. Go at 8am or save it for the cooler late afternoon; prices and crowds both ease.

Time of day

First light and last light are best for photos and comfort. Midday is harsh and busy — the museum is the place to be then.

Camel or not

Camel and horse rides are optional and heavily touted. We arrange a fair, calm one if you want it — and run interference if you don't.

The practical part

Getting there & around

Easy to reach, intense once you're there — the practical part.

01

Getting there

About 30 minutes from central Cairo and 45 from the airport by private car. There's no need to stay at Giza unless you want the pyramid view at breakfast.

02

Getting around

The plateau is large and the sun is fierce; a private car shuttles between the entrance, the panorama point and the Sphinx, with short walks at each.

03

Tickets

Plateau entry is one ticket; the Great Pyramid interior and the GEM are separate. We pre-book the interior slot, which sells out.

04

The hustle

Giza is touristy and the touts are persistent. A guide changes the day entirely — the history lands, and the hassle doesn't.

Common questions

Giza, answered

01 Are the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo? +

Effectively yes. Giza sits on the western edge of Greater Cairo, about 30 minutes from downtown and 45 from the airport. It's part of the city, not a separate trip — most people visit on a day from their Cairo hotel.

02 How long do I need at the Pyramids? +

A half day covers the three pyramids, the Sphinx and a panorama stop if you start early. A full day lets you add the Grand Egyptian Museum next door, and the climb inside the Great Pyramid.

03 Can you go inside the Great Pyramid? +

Yes, on a separate timed ticket. The passage to the King's Chamber is steep, narrow and hot, with no decoration — it's about the experience and the engineering rather than the art. We pre-book the slot, which is limited.

04 Is the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza? +

Yes — the GEM stands on the Giza plateau within sight of the pyramids, and now holds the complete Tutankhamun collection. Allow half a day, or pair it with the pyramids for a full day.

05 What's the best time to visit Giza? +

October to April for comfortable weather, and first thing in the morning any time of year — both for cooler air and to beat the coaches. Late afternoon also works for softer light and thinner crowds.
