Best time to go
The best time to visit is usually from October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are milder and walking around the plateau is more comfortable. Summer months can be very hot, especially late morning through afternoon, so early arrival is preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, visitor flow and opening routines may be different, so checking the official site before going is recommended.
02 Overview
A first look
Khafre originally stood about 143.5 metres and now measures approximately 136.4 metres. Menkaure originally reached roughly 65.5 metres and is today about 62 metres.
Background
The facts
The Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure stand on the Giza Plateau in Cairo as part of the Giza Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Khafre’s pyramid is the middle pyramid of the three main Giza pyramids and is known for a section of surviving casing stones near its summit, which helps visitors identify how the monument once appeared when newly finished.
Khafre’s pyramid was built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around the mid-26th century BCE, for Pharaoh Khafre, son of Khufu. Menkaure’s pyramid was built later in the same dynasty for Pharaoh Menkaure and is smaller than the other two main Giza pyramids. The surrounding area includes temple remains and open desert paths that allow close views of both monuments from within the complex.
This admission covers access to the pyramid complex area around Khafre and Menkaure on the Giza Plateau. It does not include optional interior chamber access inside either pyramid, and any premium archaeological areas or separate interior tickets must be purchased independently. Visitors should expect security screening at the entrance and should check current opening hours before visiting, as seasonal schedules can change.
The site is located west of central Cairo, roughly 13 to 18 kilometers from downtown depending on the route and traffic conditions. Most visitors arrive through the main Giza entrance area near the plateau, then walk between monuments on site roads and sandy paths. Photography rules, last-admission timing, and ticket-check procedures are set by site authorities and may change without notice.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 Can I go inside the Pyramid of Khafre?
Yes; interior access to the Pyramid of Khafre is permitted but requires a separate interior ticket bought at the site. The interior passage is narrow, low and hot, with uneven stone underfoot; climbers must stoop and ascend steep, worn steps. Availability is limited and tickets can sell out on busy days, so ask us to check current availability before you travel. We do not automatically include Khufu or other interior tickets with this listing. -
02 Can I enter the Pyramid of Menkaure?
The Pyramid of Menkaure's interior is generally closed to visitors; you may only view it externally from the Giza Plateau. On rare occasions the interior opens for conservation or research work; availability changes without notice. Expect to spend time photographing from the plateau and comparing scale with Khafre and Khufu. If interior access is essential, tell us and we will check the day’s status. -
03 How long should I allow to visit Khafre and Menkaure?
Allow about one to two hours to visit both the Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure. That timing covers walking between the monuments, exterior photography, and a pause at the viewing terraces but excludes a Khufu interior visit or museum stops. Traffic and ticket queues at the Giza Plateau can add 30–60 minutes during peak hours, so an early morning slot is usually quicker. Our guides typically advise a 90-minute window to keep itineraries punctual. -
04 Are tripods, drones or professional cameras allowed at the pyramids?
Personal photography is allowed at Khafre and Menkaure; tripods, drones or professional equipment usually need permits. Drones are prohibited without explicit authorisation from Egyptian authorities and can be confiscated. Tripods and commercial filming require prior permission and sometimes an on-site fee, so bring only handheld kit unless you have permits. If you plan professional photography, tell us in advance so we can advise on permits and logistics. -
05 Is there shade or seating at the Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure?
There is very limited shade and formal seating around the Pyramid of Khafre and Pyramid of Menkaure. The plateau is exposed–sun and heat are significant midday–so bring sun protection, water and a hat. Surfaces are sand, compacted earth and ancient stone; expect uneven walking and short flights of steps. We recommend visiting early morning or late afternoon to avoid the strongest sun and the largest crowds. -
06 Can I buy a combined ticket for Khafre, Menkaure and the Khufu pyramid interior?
Tickets for Khafre and Menkaure are sold separately from the Khufu pyramid interior ticket. The Khufu interior carries a distinct, premium entry and is often limited in daily numbers. We do not bundle the Khufu interior with exterior tickets because the interior is narrow and many travellers prefer to spend time on the plateau instead. If you want the Khufu interior, tell us and we will check availability and advise on timing.

AswanAbu Simbel Temples, Aswan
Abu Simbel lies about 280 km south of Aswan and is reached by a 40‑minute flight or a 3.5–4 hour road transfer. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange private early flights and timed private‑car arrivals so clients avoid coach crowds and the hottest hours. The twin sites are the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari, moved to higher ground between 1964 and 1968 during an international relocation campaign and included in the Nubian Monuments UNESCO listing. Trade‑offs: a same‑day return requires an early start and either a long road journey or a small‑plane seat; shade is limited on the forecourt.
AswanAbu Simbel Temples – Sun Festival (22 Feb / 22 Oct)
See the twice-yearly solar alignment at Abu Simbel on 22 February or 22 October when sunlight reaches the inner sanctuary. The twin rock temples were carved for Ramses II and honour Amun‑Re and Ra. They were moved in 1964–1968 and form part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae'. Abu Simbel is approximately 280 km south of Aswan (about 3.5 hours by road). We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can arrange timed-entry tickets, private road transfers and an Egyptologist briefing when available. Unlike same-day coach runs, we recommend an overnight in Aswan to avoid very early road departures and rushed visits; expect limited shade at the forecourt and large crowds on festival dates.
CairoAl-Moez Street Entry Ticket
Al-Moez Street is a medieval Cairo thoroughfare lined with Fatimid and Mamluk-era monuments, gates and historic façades. This admission grants access to the pedestrianised street and its visible monuments, including views toward Bab Zuweila and the Mosque of Al-Hakim. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange the ticket and send it to you by email as a PDF after booking. Unlike a museum admission, the street is an open historic quarter rather than a single indoor site, so visiting times are flexible but subject to seasonal opening hours and special events.
