The short answer
Cairo’s Old Treasures, Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo & Bazaar is a 1-day private guided excursion covering the Egyptian Museum, Salah El Din Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, Al Muizz Street, and Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are generally October to April, when daytime temperatures are cooler and walking in historic Cairo is easier. Summer visits can still work, but May to September often brings stronger heat and heavier midday fatigue, so an earlier start is preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, some museum or bazaar hours may change, and streets can be busier later in the day.
02 Overview
A first look
This private day visit covers the Egyptian Museum, the mosques and madrasas of Islamic Cairo, and Khan el‑Khalili bazaar. We collect from central Cairo in an air‑conditioned car; standard site entrance fees are included.
Background
The facts
This full-day Cairo excursion covers several of the city’s key historic districts in one route, usually lasting about eight hours including lunch and transfers. The day combines museum visits, Islamic monuments, and a market walk, so it is typically arranged with hotel pickup in central Cairo and return drop-off the same day. Because the itinerary is private, timing can be adjusted to reduce time spent in peak crowd periods.
The Egyptian Museum in central Cairo contains major Pharaonic holdings from the Old Kingdom through the Greco-Roman period, including royal statues, funerary objects, and named display collections associated with well-known excavations. Salah El Din Citadel, built in the 12th century under Saladin, sits on a limestone hill and overlooks Cairo; within the complex, the Mohamed Ali Mosque is one of the city’s most recognizable Ottoman-era monuments.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization presents Egyptian history from prehistoric times to the modern era and is commonly used to contextualize the older collections seen elsewhere in the city. Al Muizz Street is part of historic Islamic Cairo and preserves dense Mamluk and medieval architecture, with monuments such as mosques, madrasas, and city gates along the route. Khan El Khalili Bazaar, nearby in the historic core, is a traditional shopping district where visitors usually walk narrow lanes, stop for tea, and browse crafts and souvenirs.
Logistically, this is a walking-focused city tour with short transfers by air-conditioned vehicle between sites. Pavement can be uneven in the historic districts, and some mosque interiors require modest dress and removal of shoes. Standard entrance fees for listed sites are included unless stated otherwise; pyramid interiors, premium tombs, and gratuities are not part of this excursion.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 What does the Cairo’s Old Treasures tour include?
The tour visits the Egyptian Museum, selected Islamic Cairo sites and Khan el-Khalili bazaar in a single day. We normally visit the Egyptian Museum first, then Islamic Cairo highlights such as Al-Azhar and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, finishing at Khan el-Khalili. Expect walking on uneven pavements and narrow lanes; the bazaar is lively and crowded midday. We run this as a private tour with one of our Egyptologists – unlike large coach groups – and we are a licensed Egyptian tour operator. -
02 Are entrance fees and guide included?
Standard site entrance fees and a licensed Egyptologist guide are included in the tour price. Specialist entries (for example pyramid interiors or premium private rooms) are excluded unless requested. Transfers between sites in a private vehicle are normally included; any additional stops may incur small extra charges. We confirm inclusions on booking and advise on optional upgrades. -
03 Do I need to dress modestly for Islamic Cairo sites?
Yes – modest dress is required for mosques and some religious sites in Islamic Cairo. Shoulders and knees should be covered; women may be asked to wear a headscarf at certain mosque entrances. Shoes are removed for many mosque interiors and there are steps and carpets inside. We carry spare scarves and advise lightweight, breathable clothing for Cairo’s heat. -
04 Is the Egyptian Museum wheelchair accessible?
Access at the Egyptian Museum is partially wheelchair accessible but some galleries have steps and tight circulation. There are ramps and at least one elevator in the main building, yet older rooms and displays can be narrow. Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili have cobbled, uneven alleys and steep mosque steps, which limit easy movement. Tell us your needs in advance so we can adapt the route and provide a companion or alternate viewpoints. -
05 How much time should I allow for Khan el-Khalili bazaar?
Plan between one and two hours for Khan el-Khalili, depending on how much shopping you intend. Short visits of 45–60 minutes suit light browsing and a coffee; two hours allows negotiating and visiting a historic teahouse. The bazaar is busiest late morning and late afternoon; carry small change, expect bargaining, and prefer sealed or labelled goods for spices and jewellery. Card acceptance is limited; cash is widely used and pickpocketing risk increases in crowds. -
06 Can this tour be combined with the Giza Pyramids or Coptic Cairo?
Yes – we can combine this itinerary with the Giza Plateau or Coptic Cairo on request. Combining adds time and typically requires an earlier start or a later finish to avoid Cairo traffic and crowds. Pyramid interior tickets and premium tomb entries are not included by default and would be added if you request them. We recommend a private transfer for combined days so timings are flexible and comfortable.

Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
