The short answer
Cairo leisure day tour is a 1-day excursion covering flexible independent time in Cairo with hotel pickup, drop-off, and private transport, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
Cairo can be enjoyed year-round, but October to April is generally more comfortable for walking and shopping, with daytime temperatures often milder than in summer. June to August can be hot, and during Ramadan some shops and attractions may operate on adjusted hours, especially later in the day and around holiday periods.
02 Overview
A first look
This product is a self-directed leisure day in Cairo with our logistical support available on request. Add a private car, an Egyptologist for a half-day, or pre-booked visits to the Egyptian Museum or the Giza Plateau.
Background
The facts
A leisure day in Cairo is a flexible excursion arranged around hotel pickup, private transport, and an agreed departure and return time. It is designed for travelers who want a free day without a fixed sightseeing program, with the option to spend time shopping, resting, or arranging an independent visit to a museum or market.
The service typically begins with pickup from central Cairo hotels or a pre-agreed meeting point in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver. Common independent activities include Khan el-Khalili, which developed as a major market area in the medieval period, and visits to districts or museums within the city depending on the traveler’s own plan and the time booked.
Because Cairo traffic can be heavy, exact timing matters more than distance alone. Sites within central Cairo may be reached in short transfer windows, while cross-city movement can take significantly longer during peak periods, so this excursion is best used with a clear schedule and realistic return time.
A licensed Egyptologist or private guide can be added separately if the traveler wants contextual guidance at museums, bazaars, or historic neighborhoods. Standard site entrance fees are not automatically included unless a specific visit is added to the arrangement, and the booked vehicle and driver remain available only for the agreed duration.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 What can I do on a free day in Cairo?
You can visit museums, stroll markets, relax at your hotel, or take a short Nile felucca trip. Popular options include the Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili bazaar, Al-Azhar Park and the Muhammad Ali Mosque; we can book guides or restaurant tables. Timings change during Ramadan and Fridays; traffic can make single-site visits longer than expected. -
02 Can you arrange a private guide and driver for my free day?
Yes – we can arrange a private Egyptologist and a licensed driver for your free day. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator we supply guides who meet you at your hotel and tailor the day to your interests. Standard site entrance fees are included unless stated otherwise; pyramid interiors (Khufu/Khafre) and premium tombs are excluded unless you ask us to book them. We don't run group bus tours; we focus on private arrangements to avoid large-coach timings. -
03 Are meals included on a free day?
Meals are not included on a Free Day unless your hotel rate or package specifies otherwise. We can pre-book lunches, dinner tables, or a Nile dinner cruise as add-ons. During Ramadan some restaurants change hours; we advise checking with us before you go out in the evening. -
04 Can I visit the Pyramids or the Egyptian Museum on my free day?
Yes – we can arrange visits to the Giza Plateau and the Egyptian Museum on your free day. Pyramid interior tickets (Khufu, Khafre) are extra and excluded from standard site fees unless you ask us to book them. Traffic and queues can lengthen a visit; an early start reduces both. We can pre-book museum tickets and a guide to minimise waiting. -
05 Is it safe to walk around central Cairo during a free day?
Daytime walking in central Cairo is generally safe with normal urban precautions. Streets are busy, pavements uneven and markets like Khan el-Khalili become crowded; watch belongings and step carefully. If you prefer not to walk, we can provide a private driver for short transfers. -
06 Can you book restaurants or a Nile felucca for my free day?
Yes – we can book restaurants, a Nile felucca and other leisure reservations for your free day. Popular sunset feluccas and top restaurants need lead time; tell us preferred times and any dietary requirements. We coordinate timing around Cairo traffic and your hotel pick-up.

Abu Simbel by Plane – Day Tour from Aswan
We arrange an early-return flight from Aswan to the Abu Simbel temples, with private hotel or Nile-berth pickup and return transfers. The scheduled domestic flight is about 40 to 50 minutes each way, giving roughly two to three hours on site subject to flight schedules and security. An English-speaking Egyptologist guides the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari, part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Discovery Tours Egypt is a licensed Egyptian tour operator who coordinates the flights, transfers and Egyptologist service.

Abu Simbel by Road from Aswan Day Tour
A full-day road transfer from Aswan to the twin rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, returning the same day. Walk among the four seated colossi of the Great Temple of Ramesses II and cross to the adjacent Temple of Nefertari, both moved above the original Nile shore during the 1960s resettlement. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can confirm local entrance arrangements and Egyptologist-guided visits. The road option lets you see Lake Nasser and the desert landscape between Aswan and Abu Simbel, rather than travelling by air.
CairoAlexandria & Wadi Natrun – Day tour from Cairo
A full-day tour from Cairo linking Alexandria's coastal antiquities with the Coptic monasteries of Wadi Natrun. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies the tour. We operate this as a private-car itinerary rather than a shared coach, which gives more time at each site. Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Expect a long 12–14 hour day with approximately 220 km driving each way between Cairo and Alexandria and substantial time in the vehicle. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
