- Aswan High Dam – constructed 1960–1970 and inaugurated 1970; the dam impounds Lake Nasser. The official viewpoint is approximately 3–4 kilometres south of central Aswan (roughly a 10–15 minute drive depending on your hotel or cruise berth). · Unfinished Obelisk (Northern Quarry, Aswan) – in the ancient granite quarries on the east bank of the Nile in Aswan. The obelisk remains in situ and was planned at c. 42 metres height (c. 1,090 tonnes if finished). The quarry is approximately 2 kilometres north of central Aswan (about a 7–10 minute drive).
Best time to go
The best time is usually morning or late afternoon, especially from May to September when midday temperatures in Aswan can be very high. From October to April, conditions are milder, but sites can still be bright and warm, so sun protection is recommended. During Ramadan and major holidays, opening hours and road conditions may be less predictable, so earlier departures are often preferable.
02 Overview
A first look
See two contrasting Aswan sites in one morning: the modern Aswan High Dam and the ancient Unfinished Obelisk. The tour is about three to four hours by private car, with hotel or Nile-port pickup in Aswan.
Background
The facts
The Aswan High Dam is located about 6 km south of central Aswan on the Nile and was constructed between 1960 and 1970; it was inaugurated in 1970 and created Lake Nasser, one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs. The viewpoint visits the dam from outside, allowing travelers to understand its role in flood control, irrigation, and electricity generation in modern Egypt.
The Unfinished Obelisk is in the northern granite quarry in Aswan, where ancient stoneworking can still be seen in place. It is the largest known ancient obelisk left in situ; according to archaeologists, it was abandoned after a crack appeared during cutting, offering a clear example of how obelisks were extracted from bedrock in antiquity.
The drive between the two sites is short, and a half-day visit normally takes 3 to 4 hours including hotel or Nile-cruise pickup and drop-off within Aswan city limits. The quarry area has uneven ground, exposed rock, and limited shade, so walking shoes, sun protection, and water are appropriate, especially in warmer months.
Entrance fees for the standard sites are included in this excursion, and bottled water is provided during transfers. A licensed Egyptologist can be added on request if travelers want interpretation of the sites’ history and engineering details.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 How long is the High Dam & Unfinished Obelisk half day tour?
It runs as a half-day outing of around three to four hours. We typically allow 30–45 minutes at the High Dam viewpoint and 45–60 minutes at the Unfinished Obelisk quarry; transfer times depend on traffic. We keep this focused and private – we do not try to add Philae into the same half-day because that rushes both sites. -
02 Are entrance fees included?
Standard site entrance fees are included unless your confirmation states otherwise. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we list any optional extras (for example special permits or private-boat crossings) on your itinerary. Gratuities and personal expenses are not included. -
03 Do we go inside the Aswan High Dam?
Visitors do not tour the internal machinery; the visit is to the dam's observation areas and viewpoints. From the terrace you can see the sluices, the reservoir (Lake Nasser) and the hydroelectric installations. Access inside the dam is restricted and requires official permission which we do not routinely obtain. -
04 Is the tour suitable for people with limited mobility?
The Unfinished Obelisk site involves uneven granite, low steps and short uphill sections; it can be challenging for wheelchair users. The High Dam viewpoint is generally reachable by vehicle with only a few steps. We can arrange vehicle drops, close transfers and assistance, but continuous wheelchair ramps are not available at the quarry. -
05 What should I wear and bring for the half-day in Aswan?
Bring sun protection, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and sturdy closed shoes for the rocky quarry. Light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders is sensible during temple or mosque visits and temperatures can be high at midday. A small daypack, camera, spare batteries and a refillable water bottle are useful. -
06 Can I combine the High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk with Philae Temple or a felucca ride?
Yes – you can combine these sites, but adding Philae or a felucca usually turns it into a full-day plan. Philae requires a short boat crossing and typically 1–2 hours on site; a felucca adds roughly 45–90 minutes depending on the chosen route. Tell us your priorities and we will propose a private itinerary timed to avoid the busiest periods.

Abu Simbel by Road from Aswan Day Tour
A full-day road transfer from Aswan to the twin rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, returning the same day. Walk among the four seated colossi of the Great Temple of Ramesses II and cross to the adjacent Temple of Nefertari, both moved above the original Nile shore during the 1960s resettlement. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can confirm local entrance arrangements and Egyptologist-guided visits. The road option lets you see Lake Nasser and the desert landscape between Aswan and Abu Simbel, rather than travelling by air.
CairoAlexandria & Wadi Natrun – Day tour from Cairo
A full-day tour from Cairo linking Alexandria's coastal antiquities with the Coptic monasteries of Wadi Natrun. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies the tour. We operate this as a private-car itinerary rather than a shared coach, which gives more time at each site. Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Expect a long 12–14 hour day with approximately 220 km driving each way between Cairo and Alexandria and substantial time in the vehicle. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
