The Citadel sits on a hill east of historic Cairo and offers broad views across the city; on clear days, parts of the Giza Plateau can be seen from higher vantage points. Inside the citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali was built in the 19th century and is known for its Ottoman-inspired domes, minarets, and alabaster-clad interior. The complex also contains museums and defensive structures, but the main visitor draw for this excursion is the mosque and the elevated setting.

Old Cairo, also called Coptic Cairo, preserves churches and lanes associated with the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. The Hanging Church is built above a gatehouse of the Roman Fortress of Babylon and is one of Egypt’s most famous Coptic churches. St Sergius Church is smaller and older in layout, and its underground crypt is one of the places often linked in tradition to the Holy Family route in Egypt.

Islamic Cairo refers to the medieval core of the city, where Mamluk-era mosques, madrassas, and bazaars remain part of the urban fabric.
