Best time to go

The most comfortable months for a Cairo museum day are usually October to April, when daytime temperatures are generally milder and outdoor transfers are easier. Summer visits are still practical because the museum is largely indoors, but Cairo can be hot and traffic may be heavier; Fridays, public holidays, and school vacation periods can bring larger crowds. During Ramadan, opening hours and restaurant timing may change, so start times and lunch arrangements should be checked in advance.

02 Overview

A first look

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) houses artefacts from prehistory to the present and includes a dedicated Royal Mummies Hall since 2021. We arrange private, timed visits with one of our Egyptologists; a typical visit lasts two to three hours.

Background

The facts

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) is located in Fustat, Old Cairo, an area associated with the earliest Islamic capital of Egypt and later Cairo’s southern historic districts. The museum presents Egyptian material culture in a chronological framework, with galleries covering prehistoric artefacts, Pharaonic periods, Greco-Roman Egypt, Coptic material, Islamic civilization, and modern eras. It is designed as a broad interpretive museum rather than a single-monument site, so visitors move through themes and time periods rather than a single tomb or temple complex.

One of the museum’s best-known features is the Royal Mummies Gallery, which opened at NMEC in 2021 after the transfer of royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. The gallery displays the mummies of several New Kingdom rulers and gives historical context to royal burial practices, funerary beliefs, and preservation methods. Museum visits usually include security screening, indoor walking, and time for individual galleries; photography rules can vary by gallery and are typically controlled by museum policy.

From central Cairo, Fustat is generally reached in a short drive depending on traffic conditions, usually around 20-40 minutes from downtown or Giza hotels. A private visit is useful because it allows a flexible pace for the chronological galleries and the mummies gallery, which can be crowded at peak times and during holidays. The site is indoors and suitable year-round, with air-conditioned visitor areas and nearby restaurant options for a midday meal.

Yes, if

  • This visit suits travelers who want a structured introduction to Egyptian history, especially adults and older children interested in museums, mummies, and chronological displays. • 02 Collections run chronologically from Predynastic artefacts through Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods across thirteen themed galleries.
  • 03 We arrange Egyptologist-led visits with priority tickets; typical guided visits last 60–90 minutes and avoid the main queues.
  • 04 Located in Fustat (Old Cairo); roughly a 30–45 minute drive from the Giza Plateau, depending on traffic.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01 What are the opening hours of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation?
Opening hours vary seasonally; the museum generally opens around 09:00 and closes between 17:00 and 18:00. Times change for public holidays and during Ramadan; check the museum's site or tell us your travel dates and we will confirm. Keep in mind most visitors prefer a morning visit to avoid peak heat and school groups.
  2. 02 Is the Royal Mummies Hall at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation?
Yes – the Royal Mummies Hall houses pharaohs' mummies relocated to NMEC in April 2021. The display follows strict conservation controls and has a separate entry sequence inside the museum. Entry for the Royal Mummies can be timed or limited on busy days; we advise booking the mummies visit as part of your guided tour.
  3. 03 How long should I plan for a visit to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation?
Allow two to three hours for the main galleries and an extra 20–45 minutes for the Royal Mummies Hall. If you want a detailed guided visit covering chronological galleries from prehistory to modern Egypt, book a three-hour slot. Travellers who add contextual briefings with our Egyptologists typically spend longer and appreciate the slower pace.
  4. 04 Is photography allowed inside the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation?
Non-flash still photography is generally permitted in the public galleries. Flash, tripods, and professional or commercial photography usually require prior permission from the museum. If you plan specialist photography we can request permits in advance through our contacts.
  5. 05 Is the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation wheelchair accessible?
Most main galleries are accessible by lifts and step-free routes. There are some stairs and raised display cases; assistance may be needed for certain viewpoints. Tell us in advance if you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle or additional support and we will arrange it with our guide.
  6. 06 How do I get to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation from Giza?
By private car the museum is typically a 30–45 minute drive from the Giza Plateau, depending on Cairo traffic. We collect from Giza hotels and plan pick-up times to avoid peak jams when possible. Unlike large coach trips, we operate private transfers so you can leave and return on your own schedule.

Abu Simbel by Plane – Day Tour from Aswan

We arrange an early-return flight from Aswan to the Abu Simbel temples, with private hotel or Nile-berth pickup and return transfers. The scheduled domestic flight is about 40 to 50 minutes each way, giving roughly two to three hours on site subject to flight schedules and security. An English-speaking Egyptologist guides the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari, part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Discovery Tours Egypt is a licensed Egyptian tour operator who coordinates the flights, transfers and Egyptologist service.

A full-day road transfer from Aswan to the twin rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, returning the same day. Walk among the four seated colossi of the Great Temple of Ramesses II and cross to the adjacent Temple of Nefertari, both moved above the original Nile shore during the 1960s resettlement. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can confirm local entrance arrangements and Egyptologist-guided visits. The road option lets you see Lake Nasser and the desert landscape between Aswan and Abu Simbel, rather than travelling by air.

Alexandria & Wadi Natrun – Day tour from Cairo

A full-day tour from Cairo linking Alexandria's coastal antiquities with the Coptic monasteries of Wadi Natrun. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies the tour. We operate this as a private-car itinerary rather than a shared coach, which gives more time at each site. Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Expect a long 12–14 hour day with approximately 220 km driving each way between Cairo and Alexandria and substantial time in the vehicle. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
