The short answer
Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum Day Tour is a 1-day private excursion covering the Giza Plateau, the Great Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are usually October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are generally milder and outdoor walking at Giza is easier. May to September is hotter, especially at the plateau, so an early departure is preferable. Ramadan and major public holidays can affect opening hours, crowd levels and lunch timings, so itinerary timing should be checked in advance.
02 Overview
A first look
This full-day itinerary covers the Giza Plateau (Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure pyramids and the Great Sphinx) and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. Our Egyptologist accompanies the visits; pyramid-interior tickets are optional and not included by default.
Background
The facts
This private Cairo excursion combines two of Egypt’s best-known archaeological locations: the Giza Plateau and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. The Giza necropolis lies on the west bank of the Nile, roughly 20 km southwest of central Cairo, and contains the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, around the 26th century BCE. The Great Sphinx stands on the plateau’s eastern edge and is commonly visited together with the pyramid area because the monuments are within the same protected site.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir opened in 1902 and has long served as the main display venue for many of Egypt’s pharaonic collections. Its galleries traditionally include objects from the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms, with notable material from royal tombs, including funerary equipment, statuary, jewelry and inscribed objects. A guided visit typically focuses on selected highlights because the collection is large and cannot be covered in detail in a single short stop.
Travel between central Cairo and Giza is usually short, but traffic can affect timings, so a private vehicle is useful for keeping the day on schedule. Standard site entrance fees are generally included in tour arrangements unless stated otherwise; access to pyramid interiors is separate, and the interior of Khufu’s pyramid is not part of most standard visits. The excursion is usually paced with walking sections, photography stops and a lunch break arranged during the day.
Because both sites are high-demand landmarks, early departure helps reduce congestion at the plateau and inside the museum. Visitors should expect outdoor heat at Giza for much of the year, while the museum is indoors and air-conditioned in many areas, making the combination practical for a single day in Cairo.

Is this for you?
Yes, if
- This excursion suits first-time visitors to Cairo, couples, solo travelers and families who want a focused introduction to Egypt’s most famous pharaonic landmarks. It is also appropriate for travelers who prefer a private pace, moderate walking and time to ask questions rather than follow a fixed large-group schedule.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 What is included in the Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum Day Tour?
The tour visits the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum; standard site entrance fees are included. We provide a private vehicle, an expert Egyptologist and road transfers between sites. Pyramid interiors (Khufu/Khafre) and premium tombs in Luxor are excluded unless requested. We operate private guided visits rather than coach-group itineraries, which reduces time spent queuing and in coach traffic. -
02 Can we go inside the Great Pyramid (Khufu) or see Tutankhamun’s tomb on this tour?
Entry into the Khufu pyramid interior and premium Valley of the Kings tombs is not included by default. We can add Khufu interior access if you request it in advance, subject to limited daily tickets and extra charges. Seeing Tutankhamun’s tomb requires travel to Luxor and is not part of this Cairo day tour; the Egyptian Museum displays Tutankhamun artefacts subject to the museum’s current exhibits. -
03 How long will the Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum Day Tour take and what pace should we expect?
This is a full-day Cairo itinerary combining visits to the Giza Plateau and the Egyptian Museum. Expect several hours on the Giza Plateau and a museum visit; time on site depends on your interest in artefacts and photography. Cairo traffic and security checks can extend transfer times, so we plan flexibility into the schedule and usually recommend a morning start to avoid the midday heat. -
04 Is the tour suitable for children or travellers with limited mobility?
The Giza Plateau has uneven stone, loose sand and limited shade; it presents challenges for mobility-impaired travellers. Shorter visits, vehicle drop-offs close to key viewpoints and a gentler pace can be arranged, but some Sphinx approaches and pyramid surrounds require steps and uneven walking. Children generally enjoy the open spaces, but the Khufu interior (if added) is narrow and not recommended for young children or anyone with claustrophobia. -
05 What should we bring and wear for the day?
Bring sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, a hat and a refillable water bottle for the day. Carry your passport for onsite ticketing and expect security bag checks at both Giza and the Egyptian Museum. Dress modestly out of cultural respect–light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees is sensible for Cairo in summer. -
06 Is lunch included, and where do we eat during the tour?
Lunch is not included by default; we can arrange a Cairo restaurant or a hotel dining stop on request. We typically recommend booking a restaurant close to the museum or a nearby hotel to avoid long detours and queues. Tell us dietary needs in advance and we will reserve a suitable menu and table time. -
07 Who operates the tour and who will guide us?
We operate the tour as Discovery Tours Egypt, a licensed Egyptian tour operator; you will be accompanied by an experienced Egyptologist. We use private cars and local drivers rather than coach groups, and our Egyptologists focus on timed, paced visits to reduce queues. Tell us your hotel name at booking so we can confirm an exact pickup window and guide assignment.

CairoAlexandria & Wadi Natrun – Day tour from Cairo
A full-day tour from Cairo linking Alexandria's coastal antiquities with the Coptic monasteries of Wadi Natrun. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies the tour. We operate this as a private-car itinerary rather than a shared coach, which gives more time at each site. Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Expect a long 12–14 hour day with approximately 220 km driving each way between Cairo and Alexandria and substantial time in the vehicle. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
