The short answer
Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour is a 1-day private excursion covering the Giza pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are usually October to April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are cooler and visibility is often better for photography. From May to September, temperatures can rise significantly, so an early departure is preferable; during Ramadan and major public holidays, opening hours and traffic can be less predictable.

Background
The facts
The Pyramids & Sphinx Half Day Tour is a private sightseeing excursion on the Giza Plateau in Cairo, typically completed in about four hours including hotel pickup and return within central Cairo. The visit focuses on the three main pyramids of Giza—Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure—and the Great Sphinx, with time for photography and guided interpretation from an Egyptologist.
The Giza Plateau lies roughly 20 km southwest of central Cairo, depending on the hotel location and traffic conditions. The site contains the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, built in the 4th Dynasty around 2560 BCE, along with the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, which are arranged on the western desert edge overlooking the Nile valley.
The Great Sphinx, carved from limestone, is generally associated with Pharaoh Khafre and sits close to his pyramid complex. Visitor logistics usually involve private road transfers, walking on uneven ground, and stops at designated viewpoints where the pyramids and Sphinx can be photographed; entry inside the pyramids is optional and requires separate tickets purchased on site.
Because this is a short excursion rather than a full-day programme, it is commonly scheduled in the morning or early afternoon to avoid peak heat and heavier traffic. Standard site entrance fees are included unless otherwise stated, while interior pyramid access, premium tombs, and gratuities are not included unless specifically requested.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 Do we go inside the Great Pyramid (Khufu)?
Entrance to the Khufu pyramid interior is not included by default and costs extra at the site. We can arrange an interior ticket on request; please tell us in advance so we reserve the slot. Note the interior has low ceilings, steep steps and is physically demanding; children and claustrophobic guests often avoid it. We don't include interior tickets by default because most travellers prefer the surface visit and a shorter half-day schedule. -
02 Are entrance fees included in the tour price?
Standard site entrance fees for the Giza Plateau and the Sphinx are included in the tour price. Pyramid interior access, premium tombs and gratuities are excluded unless you specifically request them. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we collect the standard entrance fees on your behalf and provide printed tickets at the site. Any optional extras (camel ride, official guide supplements, photography permits if required) are pay-on-site or pre-booked at extra cost. -
03 How long is the Pyramids & Sphinx half day tour?
Expect about three hours from hotel pickup to hotel drop-off for a standard half-day Pyramids & Sphinx tour. Traffic in Cairo can extend transfer times, so morning pick-ups are typically earlier and more reliable. Unlike rushed coach stops, this half-day concentrates on a measured surface visit rather than a brief drive-by of the plateau. If you want the Khufu interior added, plan for an extra 45–90 minutes. -
04 What should I wear and bring for the Pyramids tour?
Wear comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and modest clothing for temples and public areas. Bring a sunhat, high-factor sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, sunglasses and a light scarf for dusty gusts. Expect uneven surfaces, stone steps and sandy stretches – closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. If visiting in summer, plan for early morning departure to avoid peak heat and limited shade on the plateau. -
05 Is the site accessible for wheelchair users?
The Giza Plateau has uneven ground, sand, steps and limited paved routes; full wheelchair access is not guaranteed. We can arrange vehicle drop-off close to the main viewpoints and provide staff assistance, but access onto ramps and around monuments is restricted. The Pyramid interiors and some viewpoints are not wheelchair-accessible due to historic stone steps and narrow paths. Please tell us your exact mobility needs at booking so we can prepare appropriate assistance and vehicle access. -
06 Can I ride a camel or take photos with camels at the Pyramids?
Yes – camel rides and camel photo-opportunities are available at Giza but they are run by independent local vendors and cost extra. Rides vary in length; prices are set by the vendors and should be agreed before mounting. If you prefer, we can pre-arrange a short, supervised camel experience through a trusted local partner to avoid haggling. Bear in mind animal welfare standards vary; short rides on flat ground are the safer option for guests.

Abu Simbel by Road from Aswan Day Tour
A full-day road transfer from Aswan to the twin rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, returning the same day. CairoAlexandria & Wadi Natrun – Day tour from Cairo
A full-day tour from Cairo linking Alexandria's coastal antiquities with the Coptic monasteries of Wadi Natrun. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies the tour. We operate this as a private-car itinerary rather than a shared coach, which gives more time at each site. Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Expect a long 12–14 hour day with approximately 220 km driving each way between Cairo and Alexandria and substantial time in the vehicle. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
