The short answer
Salah El Din Citadel Half Day Tour is a 1-day private guided excursion covering the Salah El Din Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque in Cairo, operated by Discovery Tours Egypt.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are usually October through April, when daytime temperatures in Cairo are milder and walking on exposed stone surfaces is easier. Summer months can be hot, especially around midday, so an early departure or later afternoon timing is preferable. During Ramadan and major public holidays, opening patterns and crowd levels can change, so timing should be confirmed in advance.
02 Overview
A first look
A half-day visit to Salah El Din Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, on Mokattam hill, overlooking Cairo. We provide a licensed Egyptologist and private car for pick-up from central Cairo hotels.
Background
The facts
The Salah El Din Citadel, also called the Citadel of Cairo, is a medieval defensive complex on the Muqattam hills overlooking central Cairo. It was first built by Salah El Din (Saladin) in the 12th century, beginning in 1176 CE, as a fortified seat of power for the Ayyubid state. Its elevated position was chosen for military control of the city and for long lines of sight across Cairo and toward the Giza area on clear days.
The citadel complex contains layers of later additions from the Mamluk and Ottoman periods. Visitors typically see the exterior defensive walls, towers, courtyards, and the courtyard of the Muhammad Ali Mosque, which was constructed in the 19th century under Muhammad Ali Pasha. The mosque is known for its Ottoman style, central dome composition, and alabaster interior decoration, and it is one of the most visible monuments in Cairo’s skyline.
A short guided visit usually focuses on the main viewpoints and the principal monument areas rather than the full museum circuit. Walking surfaces can include stone paving, steps, and slightly uneven sections around the ramparts and mosque courtyard, so comfortable shoes are recommended. From the Citadel, the route back to central Cairo is relatively short, making it suitable for travelers with limited time or an afternoon departure.
Because entrance fees for the standard citadel and mosque visit are commonly included in organized excursions, the main practical variables are pickup logistics, guide language, and available time on site. Private transport is often used for efficient hotel pickup and return within Cairo governorate, reducing waiting time compared with shared group departures.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
-
01 How long is the Salah El Din Citadel Half Day Tour?
The half-day tour lasts about three to four hours. We collect you from your Cairo hotel in an air‑conditioned private car and return you afterwards. Unlike full‑day Cairo tours that also visit the Egyptian Museum, this half‑day focuses on the Citadel and adjacent Mamluk monuments rather than packing multiple major sites into one morning. If you prefer a shorter or longer pace we can adjust the timing at booking. -
02 What is included in the price?
The price includes private transfers, a licensed Egyptologist, and standard site entrance fees for the Citadel. Our driver meets you at your hotel; the guide leads the visit and handles tickets. Optional extras such as mosque donations, special exhibitions or gratuities are not included unless stated. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and operate all local logistics. -
03 Do I need to wear modest clothing for the mosques at the Citadel?
Yes – modest dress is required in mosque areas: cover shoulders and knees. Women may be asked to wear a headscarf and both genders will be asked to remove shoes in certain mosque areas. We recommend a light wrap and enclosed shoes for comfort on stone floors; we can provide spare scarves if needed. -
04 Is the Citadel accessible for wheelchair users?
The Citadel is not fully accessible; there are uneven cobbles, steep ramps and many steps. Some viewpoints and courtyards are reachable by car and our driver can drop you close to those areas. Interior mosque floors and museum rooms often require steps and access varies by zone. Tell us at booking and we will plan a reduced‑access visit and suggest alternatives. -
05 When is the best time of day to visit the Citadel?
Early morning or late afternoon is best to avoid the heat and the largest crowds. Midday offers limited shade on the ramparts and can be uncomfortably hot in summer. Prayer times may briefly close parts of the mosque; our guide schedules visits to avoid closures where possible. If you want the best light for photos we can time the pick‑up accordingly. -
06 Can I take photographs inside the Salah El Din Citadel and the Muhammad Ali Mosque?
Photography is generally permitted in the Citadel courtyards and most mosque areas, but restrictions occasionally apply. Tripods, flash and commercial photography may be restricted in some rooms or exhibits; ask our guide before setting up. Photography can also be limited during prayer times and in certain museum displays. Our guide will advise on respectful framing and help request permissions when required.

CairoAlexandria & Wadi Natrun – Day tour from Cairo
A full-day tour from Cairo linking Alexandria's coastal antiquities with the Coptic monasteries of Wadi Natrun. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies the tour. We operate this as a private-car itinerary rather than a shared coach, which gives more time at each site. Unlike shore excursions run from Alexandria's port, this itinerary includes inland monastic visits away from the coast. Expect a long 12–14 hour day with approximately 220 km driving each way between Cairo and Alexandria and substantial time in the vehicle. Modest dress is required at monasteries (shoulders and knees covered; women should carry a scarf). Standard site entrance fees are included; optional donations and photography permits are not.
