Why Irish travellers prefer Amsterdam over London for Egypt
Dublin to Cairo via Amsterdam (KLM) is the routing Irish frequent-fliers default to, for three reasons. (1) Schiphol's minimum connection time is the shortest of any European hub – 35 minutes for a like-for-like Schengen-to-non-Schengen transfer. (2) KLM's Dublin and Cairo frequencies are dense, so re-protection if you misconnect is easy. (3) Heathrow's terminal sprawl makes a sub-2-hour connection genuinely risky.
Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the cheapest one-stop option, particularly in business class, but the layover is longer and IST is further from the Cairo terminal in actual minutes-on-shuttle.
Direct TUI Hurghada season
TUI Ireland runs Dublin to Hurghada in the winter-sun window, typically a single weekly departure between October and April. Sold as part of a package (flight + all-inclusive hotel), not as seat-only. Flight time 5h 30m. Worth booking 4–6 months ahead – the route is small and sells out at Christmas and February half-term.

Irish citizens need an Egypt visa, available either online at visa2egypt.gov.eg (€28, recommended) or on arrival at all five international airports for €33/US$35/£30 in cash. Bring small denominations – banks at the airport visa-on-arrival booth rarely have change for €50 notes.
