The decision
Where to stay in Marsa Alam
Marsa Alam runs for over 200 km of coast — spare, quiet and with some of the cleanest coral on the Egyptian Red Sea. Most resorts sit alone on their own reef, with no strip or promenade to speak of. The choice is whether you want the marina town of Port Ghalib as a base, a dedicated dive camp in the central stretch, or one of the southernmost lodges near Hamata's mangroves.
Port Ghalib
First-timers and families who want all services in one place
The only proper marina town on the Marsa Alam coast — a purpose-built resort hub with restaurants, a shopping strip and a safe, sandy beach. Good for those who want some infrastructure without a busy resort city.
The central house-reef strip
Serious divers who want reef access off the beach
A scatter of dive camps and boutique resorts between Port Ghalib and Abu Dabbab, each sitting on its own reef. Rooms are often simple, but the reef access is the best on the coast — breakfast, fins on, in the water by 8am.
Abu Dabbab & Marsa Mubarak
Wildlife seekers and snorkellers
The famous dugong bay and sea-turtle grazing grounds north of Marsa Alam town. Resorts here are small and reef-focused; the snorkelling is shallow, calm and full of large animals. The best base if dugongs are the point.
Hamata & the south
Eco travellers and those after real remoteness
The last cluster of camps before the Sudanese border — mangrove kayaking, Sataya Reef for spinner dolphins, and near-zero crowds. More lodge than hotel, usually half-board, for people who know what they're looking for.
What the stars mean here
Star ratings in Marsa Alam
In Marsa Alam the reef rating often matters more than the star rating — here's what each level tends to mean in practice.
A simple dive camp or lodge on a house reef. Basic rooms, sometimes tented or chalet-style, with reef access straight off the beach and a dive centre on site. The budget-diver's classic — sleep simple, dive well.
A polished resort with pools, multiple restaurants and a strong house reef. Most of Marsa Alam's mid-range inventory is here — comfortable, unpretentious, and built for the water.
The Port Ghalib marina properties and a small number of eco-luxury lodges — the best kitchens, the most attentive dive staff and usually the most wildlife-aware operations on the coast.
From your door
What you can do from a Marsa Alam hotel
A Marsa Alam hotel puts the Red Sea's least-crowded diving in front of you — dugongs at Abu Dabbab and spinner dolphins at Sataya within a morning's boat ride.
Dugong watching at Abu Dabbab
The shallow bay where dugongs and sea turtles graze year-round — a snorkel trip from most resorts, or a short drive if you're based at Port Ghalib.
Sataya Reef and spinner dolphins
The overnight anchorage at Sataya — the boat leaves late afternoon, anchors at the dolphin reef, and you're in the water with a pod of spinners at dawn.
The house reef by fin or tank
Most Marsa Alam resorts sit on their own reef — a 60-second walk and you're in. Soft coral, sea turtles and the occasional napoleon wrasse on any morning dive.
Hamata mangroves
Kayak the southern mangrove inlets at Hamata — a flat, calm and completely wild hour on the water, with the desert cliffs behind and a reef just offshore.
Before you book
Booking a Marsa Alam hotel, practically
A few things worth knowing before you pick a Marsa Alam hotel.
How many nights
Seven to ten for a dive week, five if you want a shorter break. Marsa Alam is at least a four-hour drive from Cairo and the Nile sites, so it's almost always a dedicated stay rather than an add-on.
Getting in from the airport
Marsa Alam Airport (RMF) is small and calm, with direct charters from the UK. Port Ghalib is 10–15 minutes away; most dive camps and beach resorts are 20–60 minutes north or south along the coast road. A private transfer puts you at the door.
Diving shapes the choice more than the stars
A 3-star camp on a great house reef often beats a 5-star resort with no reef access. Tell us what you want from the water — shore diving, boat trips to offshore sites, or wildlife snorkelling — and we'll match the property to it.
All-inclusive vs half-board
Unlike Sharm, many Marsa Alam camps run half-board rather than all-inclusive, leaving lunchtime free for dive trips. We confirm the board and what the dive centre charges before you book.
Common questions
Marsa Alam hotels, answered
01 Where is the best area to stay in Marsa Alam? +
Port Ghalib if you want restaurants, a marina and a proper beach in one place; the central house-reef strip if shore diving is the reason you're here; Abu Dabbab and Marsa Mubarak if you want the dugong grounds and calm snorkelling; Hamata for complete remoteness and the Sataya dolphins. We'll ask what the trip is for and point you to the right stretch of coast.
02 Can you see dugongs in Marsa Alam? +
Yes — Abu Dabbab Bay is one of the most reliable places on earth to snorkel with dugongs. Sea turtles and dolphins are also common. Year-round, no permit needed, and a short boat or drive from most central resorts. If dugongs are the point, we'll put you in a resort on or close to the bay.
03 Is Marsa Alam good for diving? +
It's among the least-crowded diving on the Egyptian Red Sea. House reefs off the beach, offshore sites like Sataya Reef and Elphinstone, and clear, warm water year-round. If you've dived Sharm or Hurghada and want dugongs, napoleon wrasse and far fewer boats, Marsa Alam is the step up.
04 How many nights should I spend in Marsa Alam? +
Seven to ten for a full dive trip — enough to do the house reef every morning, a boat trip to Elphinstone or Sataya, and a dugong day at Abu Dabbab. Five nights works for a short break. Fewer than four nights doesn't justify the transfer given the distance from Cairo.
05 Do your Marsa Alam hotels include meals and airport pickup? +
Board varies — many dive camps run half-board, larger resorts offer all-inclusive. We confirm exactly what's covered on the quote. Airport pickup is a simple add; a private transfer from RMF to the resort is the standard arrival.
