Get your bearings

What Saqqara actually is

Saqqara is where it all started. Before Giza, before the smooth-sided pyramids, the architect Imhotep stacked six stone platforms over the tomb of King Djoser and built the world's first monumental stone structure — the Step Pyramid, around 2670 BC. Everything that followed, the Great Pyramid included, descends from this experiment.

The site is the vast necropolis of Memphis, Egypt's first capital, and it's far quieter than Giza. Painted tombs of nobles still carry scenes of daily life in crisp colour, and the Serapeum's giant granite sarcophagi sit in the dark. Twenty minutes further south, the Bent and Red Pyramids of Dahshur show the moment, mid-construction, when the Egyptians finally got the geometry right.

What you're really here to see

The landmarks that make Saqqara

The six-tiered Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara 01

The Step Pyramid of Djoser

The oldest large stone building in the world and the ancestor of every pyramid that followed — six tiers rising from the desert, recently restored, with the colonnaded entrance courtyard open again. The quiet here, compared to Giza, is part of the gift.

1–2 hours

The reclining colossus of Ramses II at Memphis 02

Memphis & the colossus of Ramses

The first capital of a unified Egypt, now mostly returned to palm groves and fields — but its open-air museum holds a vast reclining colossus of Ramses II and a fine alabaster sphinx. A short, atmospheric stop usually paired with Saqqara.

45 minutes

The Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid at Dahshur 03

The pyramids of Dahshur

Twenty minutes south, the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid catch the exact moment the Egyptians learned to build true pyramids. You can climb into the Red Pyramid with almost no one else around — the antidote to the Giza crowds.

How many days in Saqqara?

Saqqara is a half-day, but how far south you push is the real choice.

Half day Step Pyramid

Saqqara on its own — the Step Pyramid, the colonnade and a painted noble's tomb, then back to Cairo by lunch.

Half day + + Memphis

Add the open-air museum at Memphis for the colossus of Ramses — an easy combination, both within reach in a morning.

Full day The pyramid story

Pair Saqqara and Dahshur to trace pyramid-building from the first step pyramid to the first true one — a richer day than Giza alone.

From Cairo Where to base

There's no need to stay nearby; Saqqara is an easy guided half-day from any Cairo hotel.

Where it fits

Saqqara in your itinerary

Saqqara is the deeper, quieter companion to Giza — the start of the pyramid story.

With Giza

Do Giza for scale and Saqqara for origins; together they tell the whole story of the pyramid.

Add Memphis

The first capital is minutes away — a natural three-part morning of Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur.

Beat the crowds

Saqqara and Dahshur see a fraction of Giza's visitors, with tombs you can have almost to yourself.

Part of Cairo

An easy 45-minute drive south of the city — a half-day before or after the Giza plateau.

3-Day Cairo: Giza, Egyptian Museum & Old Cairo

3-Day Cairo: Giza, Egyptian Museum & Old Cairo

A three-day private Cairo itinerary visiting the Giza Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and Old Cairo with private transport and an English-speaking Egyptologist. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we don't run group-bus tours; all site visits and transfers are private. Day one focuses on the Giza Plateau (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure) with a sunrise or early-morning option to avoid crowds. Day two covers the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir area; day three visits Coptic and Islamic Cairo including the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Unlike cruise-ship day trips, two nights in Cairo let you schedule Giza at dawn and a calmer afternoon for the Museum. Standard site fees are included; the Khufu pyramid interior, premium tombs (Tutankhamun/Seti I) and gratuities are excluded. Expect early starts, busy sites and limited shade at Giza; modest dress is required for mosques.

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis – Day Tour

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara & Memphis – Day Tour

Visit the Giza Pyramids (Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure), the Great Sphinx, Saqqara’s Step Pyramid of Djoser and the open‑air museum at Memphis in one day. We run this as a private day tour in a chauffeur‑driven car rather than a large coach, which gives flexible time at each site. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologists explain inscriptions, funerary architecture and the UNESCO‑listed Memphis and Necropolis complex. Standard site entrances are included; pyramid interior tickets (Khufu/Khafre), premium tombs and gratuities are excluded. Expect limited shade on the Giza Plateau and uneven stone underfoot at Saqqara.

Bent Pyramid, Dahshur

Bent Pyramid, Dahshur

The Bent Pyramid at Dahshur was built for Pharaoh Sneferu during the Fourth Dynasty and changes inclination from about 54° to 43°. The site forms part of the UNESCO listing “Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur.” We run Dahshur as a private half‑day visit from central Cairo rather than a rushed Giza add‑on, and we commonly combine this stop with the nearby Red Pyramid. Interior access to the Bent Pyramid is not guaranteed and is not included; we can request it for an extra fee. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we provide a private car and one of our Egyptologists for the visit.

Imhotep Museum, Saqqara (Entry Ticket)

Imhotep Museum, Saqqara (Entry Ticket)

Entry ticket to the Imhotep Museum at Saqqara, beside the Step Pyramid of Djoser. The museum presents pottery, reliefs and stonework recovered from nearby mastabas and necropoleis in climate-controlled galleries; allow 30–60 minutes. We sell single-site tickets because combining the museum with a rushed Saqqara circuit often shortchanges both the indoor displays and the open-air tombs. This product is entry only: private guiding, car transfer and premium pyramid-interior tickets are not included but we can arrange them. Timed tickets help avoid the midday heat; seating inside is limited, so plan a concise visit rather than a long stay.

Memphis, Sakkara & Dahshur (including Unas Pyramid)

Memphis, Sakkara & Dahshur (including Unas Pyramid)

This half-day excursion covers Memphis, the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Sakkara, Dahshur and the Unas Pyramid with commentary from our Cairo Egyptologists. We don't rush Sakkara: expect two to three hours at the Step Pyramid complex rather than a brief roadside stop. Unlike Giza-only itineraries, the route includes Dahshur's Bent and Red Pyramids and the Unas Pyramid's Pyramid Texts. Standard site entrance fees are included; optional pyramid interiors and premium tombs are excluded. We recommend a morning start to avoid midday heat; expect walking on uneven ancient stone and limited shade at Dahshur. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we provide a private air-conditioned car and a licensed Egyptologist.

On request
Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara, Memphis & Grand Egyptian Museum

This private full-day tour covers the Giza Plateau (Khufu Pyramid exterior), the Great Sphinx, Saqqara, ancient Memphis and the Grand Egyptian Museum. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Egyptologist accompanies every departure. We offer the Khufu Pyramid interior as an optional extra rather than including it by default. Unlike large coach excursions, we schedule longer stops at Saqqara and the Grand Egyptian Museum for meaningful viewing time. Expect security checks, museum queueing at peak times, crowded viewpoints at the Giza Plateau, and uneven ancient stone underfoot. Hotel pick-up in Cairo is included; travel to Giza is typically 30–45 minutes (20–25 km) depending on traffic.

Saqqara & Memphis Half-Day Tour

Saqqara & Memphis Half-Day Tour

This private half-day visits Saqqara's Step Pyramid of Djoser and the open-air museum at Mit Rahina (Memphis), departing from central Cairo. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Cairo-based Egyptologists accompany every departure. Typical drive time from central Cairo is 40–60 minutes depending on traffic; we collect from central hotels. Site entrance fees are included; pyramid interiors and premium tombs are excluded and can be added on request. We run this as a private car tour, not a large-coach excursion, so you set the pace at each site. Note: limited shade and uneven ancient stone mean sensible shoes and sun protection are necessary.

On request
Saqqara Complex – Djoser Step Pyramid & Serapeum

Saqqara Complex – Djoser Step Pyramid & Serapeum

Saqqara Complex contains the Djoser Step Pyramid and the Serapeum, part of the UNESCO 'Memphis and its Necropolis' site. We offer private-car visits escorted by our Egyptologists so you have time at Unas, Teti and Mereruka’s tombs. We do not compress Saqqara into a brief roadside stop; we recommend at least three hours on site to study reliefs and descent shafts. Unlike the Giza Plateau, Saqqara shows the architectural evolution from mastabas to stone pyramids. Expect limited shade and uneven ancient stone underfoot; special-access chambers sometimes carry supplementary fees.

Best time to visit

When to go to Saqqara

Open desert, like Giza — go in the cool months and the cool hours.

October–April · best

Comfortable days for wandering the necropolis (20–28°C) and clear light on the stone. The pleasant season for any Cairo-area site, and reliable winter sun from the UK.

May–September · hot

Above 35°C with little shade. Go early; the quiet of Saqqara is at least more bearable than the crowds of Giza in summer.

Mornings

Start early — the light is kind, the tombs stay cool inside, and the painted chambers sit empty before the Giza coaches swing south.

Pair smartly

Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur sit close together; one guided loop covers all three without backtracking.

The practical part

Getting there & around

Close to Cairo, spread out on the ground — the practical part.

01

Getting there

About 45 minutes south of central Cairo by private car. There's no public transport worth using; this is a guided day-trip.

02

Getting around

The necropolis is large and the sites (Saqqara, Memphis, Dahshur) are spread out, so a car with a guide is the only sensible way to link them.

03

Tickets

Separate tickets cover the Step Pyramid complex, individual tombs, the Serapeum and the Dahshur pyramids. We sort the worthwhile ones in advance.

04

Bring

A torch helps in the darker tombs, along with sun protection and water for the open stretches between monuments.

Common questions

Saqqara, answered

01 What is Saqqara famous for? +

The Step Pyramid of Djoser — the world's oldest large stone building and the ancestor of all later pyramids, designed by Imhotep around 2670 BC. Saqqara is also the necropolis of ancient Memphis, full of painted nobles' tombs.

02 Is Saqqara worth visiting if I've seen Giza? +

Very much so. Giza is about scale; Saqqara is about origins — the first pyramid, the best-preserved tomb paintings near Cairo, and a fraction of the crowds. Together they tell the whole story.

03 How far is Saqqara from Cairo? +

About 45 minutes south by car. It's an easy half-day, and pairs naturally with Memphis and the Dahshur pyramids for a fuller morning.

04 Can you go inside the pyramids at Saqqara and Dahshur? +

Yes — parts of the Step Pyramid complex are open, and at nearby Dahshur you can climb into the Red Pyramid, often with almost no one else there. We build the best interiors into the day.

05 Should I combine Saqqara with Memphis and Dahshur? +

If you have the morning, yes. The three sit close together and tell a single story — the first capital, the first step pyramid, and the first true pyramids — in one guided loop.
