The short answer

02Overview
A first look
If you want sun, sea and a bit of structure, this holiday fits. You stay for five nights in El Gouna, a lagoon resort town some 25 km north of Hurghada, and you unpack once. Someone meets you at Hurghada Airport and takes you to your hotel, a drive of about an hour.
After the day of arrival there is a single outing each day and the rest of the time is yours. First comes Paradise Island, then Orange Bay on Giftun Island, then a boat out to Dolphin House, then a short semi-submarine trip over the reef. On the last day you check out and are driven back to the airport. Flights to Egypt are not included.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
6 Days / 5 Nights · Hurghada Airport · El Gouna · Paradise Island · Giftun Island · Orange Bay · Dolphin House
- 1
Once you land at Hurghada Airport, our representative meets you and sees you through the arrival. You then travel by private air-conditioned car to your hotel in El Gouna, which takes about an hour. There is no programme for the rest of the day, so spend it finding your way around, taking a swim and recovering from the journey.
- 2
You are collected from your hotel for roughly eight hours out on the water. The boat, which you share with other guests, runs out to Paradise Island, where a sunbed and parasol await you on the beach. A snorkelling guide leads the swim, and a mask, snorkel and fins are provided. Lunch, soft drinks and water are served on the boat, and marine park fees are covered.
You are dropped back at the hotel, with the evening free.
- 3
A motorboat carries you across from Hurghada to Orange Bay on Giftun Island. You snorkel twice with a guide, using the equipment and life jackets supplied, and rest on a beach sunbed between swims. A hot lunch and bottled water are part of the day. The boat then returns to Hurghada and you are taken back to your hotel, leaving the remaining hours free.
- 4
This is a second long day at sea, about eight hours, again with other guests on board. The boat makes for Dolphin House, a reef where dolphins are regularly seen. They are wild animals, so there is no promise of a sighting, but the snorkelling is worthwhile regardless. A guide leads the swim and you are given a mask, snorkel and fins.
Lunch comes with soft drinks and water, and marine park fees are included. You are back at the hotel by late afternoon.
- 5
The shortest outing of the week takes about three hours. You board a semi-submarine for a two-hour trip and look out at the reef from beneath the surface through its windows. There is also a swim stop, for which a mask and snorkel are provided, and a soft drink and water are served on board. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, which leaves the afternoon free for the beach or the pool.
- 6
After breakfast you check out and your driver takes you back to Hurghada Airport, an hour's journey. A representative is there to help you with the airport formalities. Please allow a generous margin before your flight, as traffic on the road can slow the drive. The holiday ends at the airport.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Pack a UV-protective swim top for Dolphin House, as the sunshine reflecting off open water burns skin faster than most people expect.
- 02
Carry a waterproof pouch for your phone and a spare towel on Orange Bay day, since Giftun's beach is sandy and the boat gets splashy.
- 03
Go down into the semi-submarine as soon as you board; the reef shows best through its windows on a flat, calm sea.
- 04
If boats make you queasy, take travel-sickness pills before leaving for Paradise Island, because the water outside the harbour can get lively.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travellers who want a Red Sea beach holiday with a light plan: one outing a day and the rest of the day free. Suits couples, friends and families who are happy on small boats and in the water.
Maybe not, if
- Travellers who want ancient sites, who suffer badly from seasickness or who cannot swim. Three of the four outings are on boats at sea.
Honest assessment
The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.
Highlights
- One hotel for five nights, so you unpack only once
- Four different Red Sea outings, all with hotel pickup
- Snorkelling kit and marine park fees included where each outing lists them
Things to Consider
- Days 2, 3 and 4 are long days on boats, subject to weather and sea state
- Dolphins are likely to be seen but never guaranteed
- No temples, museums or Egyptologist-led sightseeing
Where it fits
A good choice for a week of beach and reef time with just enough structure. It is not a sightseeing holiday, so add Cairo or a Nile cruise if the ancient sites matter to you.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Many Red Sea packages sell the hotel and the boat trips separately. This holiday joins them: a single El Gouna hotel, transfers and four outings with hotel pickup, paced as one excursion a day plus free time. The standard of hotel is your choice; the outings stay the same.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Please give us each child's age when you book. Hotel and excursion prices depend on age and on the room used, and the boat operators set their own age and size limits, which we confirm with you before you pay. Children wear a life jacket on the boats, and we advise that young children stay out of open water for snorkelling unless they are confident swimmers.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Most of the holiday is spent on boats and beaches. Boarding involves a gangway or steps and a deck that moves, and beach days mean walking on sand. Snorkelling requires you to swim or float comfortably in a life jacket. Transfers are in a private air-conditioned vehicle. We cannot promise step-free boarding. Let us know about any mobility needs when you book and we will say honestly which outings suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The boat trips follow marine park rules, and the fees we include for Paradise Island and Dolphin House are marine park fees. We ask guests to wear reef-safe sun cream, never stand on or touch coral, and give dolphins plenty of room. Excursions are run by local operators in Hurghada and El Gouna, so much of what you spend stays on the coast. Transfers are by road and the boats are diesel, so we make no claim about carbon savings.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How much of the holiday is planned?
Day 1 is arrival and day 6 is departure. On each of days 2 to 5 there is one outing with hotel pickup, and the rest of the day is your own. It is one excursion and free time, not a full timetable.02Where exactly is El Gouna?
El Gouna is a lagoon resort town on the Red Sea coast, some 25 km north of Hurghada. It is about an hour by road from Hurghada Airport.03Which hotel will we stay in?
You pick a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotel for your dates. The outings are the same at every standard.04Is snorkelling kit provided?
Yes, on all four outings. A mask and snorkel are supplied each time, with fins on the Paradise Island and Dolphin House days and life jackets at Orange Bay.05Are we sure to see dolphins?
No. The dolphins at Dolphin House are wild. Sightings are likely but cannot be guaranteed, and the reef and the boat day are included either way.06What happens if the sea is rough?
Boat trips go ahead only if the weather and sea state allow. A captain may alter or cancel a sailing for safety, and if that happens we will help you rearrange the outing for another day where we can.07Do I have to be a strong swimmer?
You should feel at ease in the water. Guides lead the snorkelling and life jackets are worn at Orange Bay, but you do need to swim or float. If you are anxious, tell us when you book.08Will I catch my flight home?
The holiday finishes with a transfer to Hurghada Airport, so leave a generous margin. If you are changing planes elsewhere on separate tickets, a delay could cost you the connection. Choose flights with a long layover and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.09What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips, drinks other than those stated, meals not listed and anything you buy in the resort.
