What El Quseir actually is

El Quseir is an ordinary working port with about 50,000 residents, 138 kilometres south of Hurghada and 130 kilometres north of Marsa Alam. It predates the holiday coast by centuries. Boats have called here for thousands of years, and the town was once the sea end of the Wadi Hammamat trail, the desert track from the Nile valley. Under the Ottomans it became a principal sailing port for pilgrims heading to Mecca.

You can cover the lot on foot. An Ottoman fort dating from the 1570s stands close to the water and now houses a museum. Narrow streets of balconied, shuttered houses run behind it, and the former Italian-run phosphate works, active in the early 1900s, are along the shore. Most holidaymakers make it a half-day trip from Marsa Alam. The beach hotels and Coraya Bay are roughly 70 kilometres south by the airport, so expect a change of scene, not a resort.

What you're really here to see

Why people come to El Quseir

The Ottoman fort

Raised in the 1570s to protect the harbour and the pilgrim route, the fort was occupied by Napoleon's army in the 1790s and survived a siege by British naval forces. It is now a museum. Cannons stand in the yard alongside old phosphate trucks and a replica dhow.

Allow an hour or two

The old town

Two-storey houses with timber balconies and shutters, close to the waterfront. Many are weather-beaten. This is a town people still live in rather than a tidied-up exhibit, and that honesty is what makes a wander worthwhile.

A walk of an hour or two

The phosphate works

An Italian-backed company opened phosphate mines and a processing plant here in the early 1900s, and its large buildings survive in the north of town. They show the port's second life after the pilgrim trade, and the trucks in the fort belong to the same story.

Best time to visit

When to go to El Quseir

El Quseir is hot desert country, so October to April is easiest for walking about.

October–April · best

Dry, warm days that suit the fort and the streets. Winter nights here are some of the mildest on Egypt's coast, which is welcome after a British December.

June–August · hot

Hot, but the summer days run slightly cooler than Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. Go in the early morning.

Rain

Hardly any. Sun and heat are the thing to plan for, so take a hat and a bottle of water.

Time of day

Aim to finish the fort and the walking before the midday sun.
