On day 3 you fly to Aswan for the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae, and the whole of day 4 goes to Abu Simbel.
On day 5 you drive to Luxor, calling at Kom Ombo and Edfu on the way. Day 6 belongs to the West Bank, with the afternoon free, and on the morning of day 7 you walk round Karnak and Luxor Temple before a private drive to Hurghada on the Red Sea for two nights, with a free day in between. A flight to Cairo on day 9 leads into Islamic and Coptic Cairo, and you fly home the next morning. Day by day
Detailed itinerary
10 Days / 9 Nights · Cairo · Aswan · Luxor · Hurghada
- 1
Our representative is waiting in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel. There is nothing on the programme for the rest of the day, so rest after the journey and spend the evening as you wish. Sightseeing begins the following morning.
- 2
Expect a full day with your private Egyptologist, collected from the hotel early. The first stop is the Giza Plateau, for the pyramids and the Great Sphinx; plan on 4 to 6 hours for the Giza visit. Lunch follows, and then the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to the Tutankhamun collection and the monumental statues of the Old and New Kingdoms.
Guide, entrance fees and air-conditioned transport are all included.
- 3
You are driven to Cairo Airport for the flight to Aswan and met on arrival. In the afternoon you see the granite quarries with the Unfinished Obelisk and the Aswan High Dam, then take a boat to Philae, the temple of Isis on its island, with an Egyptologist guide. The vehicle and entrance fees are included, and the visits are timed around the airline's schedule. Lunch is not included today.
- 4
The whole day goes to Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II had two temples cut into the rock beside Lake Nasser, guarded by colossal statues. You make the journey by road from Aswan, and the entrance fees are included. It means an early start and a long day, and you spend a second night in Aswan.
- 5
A full day of driving and temples. You set off from Aswan by road with a local Egyptologist and stop at the temples of Kom Ombo and Edfu before reaching Luxor. The air-conditioned vehicle, the entrance fees for the listed temples and the guide are included. You arrive in Luxor at the end of the day and stay the night.
- 6
Your English-speaking Egyptologist takes you across the Nile to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, where three tombs are included, then Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. The visit lasts around six hours, with the guide, entrance fees and air-conditioned transport all included. The rest of the day is yours, and you spend a second night in Luxor.
- 7
After breakfast your Egyptologist leads you round the East Bank: Karnak, Egypt's largest temple complex, and Luxor Temple. Guide, entrance fees and transport between the two sites are included. In the afternoon a private, air-conditioned vehicle drives you from Luxor to Hurghada on the Red Sea, a journey of about five hours.
This is a day of sightseeing followed by a long drive, and you check in to your hotel in the evening.
- 8
There is nothing on the programme today. Swim, laze by the pool or stroll along the Red Sea shore. If you would like a boat trip, snorkelling or another outing, ask us and we will quote for it. Breakfast at the hotel is included.
- 9
A transfer takes you to Hurghada Airport for the flight to Cairo, where a driver meets you and takes you to your hotel. You then set out with a private Egyptologist for around six hours of sightseeing, fitted around the airline's flight time.
You see the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, then Old Coptic Cairo, with a lunch break, the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. Guide, entrance fees and transport are included. This is your last night in Cairo.
- 10
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and check out. A private transfer then takes you to Cairo Airport, with about 90 minutes allowed for the drive. Finishing with a night in Cairo is deliberate: if the internal flight on day 9 ran late, you still have a margin before your international departure.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Book Abu Simbel for the earliest departure, before heat builds on the desert road.
- 02
Karnak photographs best when side light reaches the Great Hypostyle Hall columns.
- 03
Wear shoes with grip on the Luxor West Bank, some stone surfaces are uneven and dusty.
- 04
Hurghada beaches are usually calmer in the morning, with less wind and clearer water.
- 05
Khan El Khalili is often less crowded after the afternoon prayer window.
Tailor it
Make it yours
You choose the standard of hotel when you book. Ask us about a Nile cruise in place of the road journey, extra nights in Hurghada or Luxor, a Red Sea boat trip, or a hot-air balloon flight over Luxor.
Your own specialist deals with each request before you book.
Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travellers who want Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and some time by the sea without rushing. Suits couples, friends and solo travellers who are happy with long drives, two flights and plenty of walking.
Maybe not, if
- Travellers who need step-free access to every site, or who dislike long road days. Days 4, 5 and 7 involve a lot of driving.
Honest assessment
The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.
Highlights
- Giza, Philae, Abu Simbel, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor in ten days
- Abu Simbel has a day of its own, and Hurghada has a free day
- Both internal flights and all transfers arranged for you
- A final night in Cairo protects your flight home
Things to Consider
- Days 4, 5 and 7 involve a lot of road travel
- Uneven stone, steps and little shade at the major sites
- No Nile cruise: Aswan to Luxor is by road
Where it fits
A good fit if you want Abu Simbel, Luxor and a rest by the sea at a steady pace. If you want to sleep on the Nile, choose a holiday with a Nile cruise.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Many operators sell Aswan, Luxor and a Red Sea stay as separate trips. This holiday joins them in ten days with two flights and every transfer arranged for you, and finishes with a night in Cairo so a late internal flight does not put your flight home at risk.

Accessibility
Who can join this
This holiday involves a good deal of walking around large archaeological sites, on uneven stone and sand, with steps and some narrow tomb passages. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Abu Simbel have long, open stretches with little shade. Visiting Philae means a short boat crossing and steps, and several days include long road journeys. Vehicles are air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses two internal flights and long road transfers, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Sightseeing is led by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Hurghada, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. We ask guests to bring a refillable water bottle and to keep their hands off the painted walls in tombs.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the internal flights included?
Yes. The flight from Cairo to Aswan on day 3 and the flight from Hurghada to Cairo on day 9 are booked for you and are included in the price. Between Aswan, Luxor and Hurghada you travel by road. International flights are not included.02Will I make my flight home?
Internal and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed internal flight could cost you the connection. For that reason the holiday finishes with a night in Cairo. If you ever need to fly to Cairo and connect the same day, choose a late-evening or night departure home, and make sure your travel insurance covers missed connections.03When do we visit Abu Simbel?
On day 4, the day after you fly to Aswan. It is a full day by road from Aswan, with entrance fees included, and it means an early start.04Is there a Nile cruise on this holiday?
No. You travel from Aswan to Luxor by road on day 5, stopping at Kom Ombo and Edfu. If you want to sleep on a ship, a holiday with a Nile cruise is a better match.05What is there to do in Hurghada?
Day 8 is free. Hurghada is a Red Sea resort town, and most guests swim and relax. We can quote for a boat trip or snorkelling if you ask, but none is included.06Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotels for your dates. There are nine hotel nights with breakfast: three in Cairo, two in Aswan, two in Luxor and two in Hurghada. The sightseeing does not change.07What is not included?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides and drivers, dinners and drinks, lunches other than the one on day 2, the inside of the Khufu pyramid, premium tombs such as Tutankhamun's, and travel insurance.08When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for walking around the sites. Summers are very hot, especially in Aswan and Luxor, so days start early.09What happens on the first day?
Your driver meets you at Cairo Airport and takes you to the hotel. Nothing else is planned, so you can rest and eat wherever you like that evening. Dinner is not included.10How do the Luxor days fit together?
Day 6 covers the West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon, with the rest of the day free. Karnak and Luxor Temple follow on the morning of day 7, and you then drive to Hurghada in the afternoon, about five hours. Guide, entrance fees and transport are included on both mornings.
