The Giza Plateau lies on the western edge of Greater Cairo and contains the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure alongside the Great Sphinx. The complex also includes the Solar Boat Museum and several mastaba tombs.

The facts

The Pyramids Area is the archaeological zone on the Giza Plateau, west of the Nile in Cairo. Its principal monuments are the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, with the Great Sphinx area nearby. The entry ticket grants access through the site gates and to plateau viewpoints; pyramid interiors are not included.

The plateau is about 13 to 18 km from central Cairo, depending on the starting point and traffic. The Great Pyramid of Khufu dates to Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around 2600 BCE, and is the oldest and largest of the three principal pyramids.

The Giza pyramid complex forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Memphis and its Necropolis, inscribed in 1979. Security screening takes place at the entrance.   1. 01Am I able to enter the Great Pyramid of Khufu?
    Standard Pyramids-area entry does not include interior access to Khufu's pyramid. Interior tickets for Khufu (and Khafre) are sold separately on a limited basis and can sell out early. We do not automatically include interior access in our standard arrangements; most guests choose it only after deciding they are comfortable with tight, steep, and low passages. Interior visits involve uneven stone, low ceilings and extra security checks; children under six are usually not permitted.
  2. 02Do entrance tickets include the Sphinx and Valley Temple?
    Yes – the standard Giza Plateau ticket covers the Sphinx and the Valley Temple areas. Certain fenced or conservation zones may be closed intermittently for restoration, and access to specific archaeological trenches can be restricted. Pyramid interiors and premium guided access to restricted conservation areas are charged separately. If you want a timed, guided visit that includes both the Plateau and the Valley Temple, we can pre-arrange the necessary passes.
  3. 03What should I wear and bring to visit the Pyramids area?
    Wear flat, sturdy shoes and light, modest clothing; bring sun protection and water. Carry a wide-brim hat or cap, SPF 30+ sunscreen, sunglasses, at least one litre of water per person, and small change for drinks or tips. Temples and the nearby mosques require shoulders and knees covered; there is limited shade at midday and much walking on uneven ancient stone. Early-morning visits reduce heat and dust; we can advise precise timing for your itinerary.
  4. 04Are camels and horses available at Giza?
    Yes – independent camel and horse rides operate around the Pyramids, run by local providers. Prices are negotiated locally and are not included with Plateau tickets; rides add time and involve uneven sandy terrain and simple tack. Animal welfare and safety standards vary; we can arrange vetted options on request but we do not automatically book rides. Expect persistent offers from handlers if you decline and prepare to bargain for a fair price.
  5. 05Is it possible to see the Pyramids at sunset or on a night light show?
    You can visit the Plateau at sunset but the official light-and-sound show is a separately ticketed evening event. Sunset visits are popular for photography and crowd avoidance, though parking and traffic commonly worsen after 17:30. The light show runs from a dedicated venue with its own schedule and tickets; we do not operate the public show but can time private visits or arrange a terrace viewpoint before sunset. Private sunset arrangements must be planned in advance to secure access and parking.
  6. 06Do I need to book Pyramids tickets in advance?
    Pre-booking is recommended for peak season and for interior or special-access tickets. Standard Plateau tickets are often available at the gate, but queues form and Khufu interior tickets regularly sell out during high season. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we can pre-purchase timed passes and handle entry logistics to reduce queueing and waiting time.
