Solo Egypt Holidays

Egypt is a genuinely excellent solo travel destination – in large part because a private guide changes the experience entirely. Where a solo traveller on a group tour listens to the same script as nineteen other people, a solo traveller with a private Egyptologist can ask exactly what they want, linger where they're interested and skip what they're not. Our solo Egypt holidays include private guiding throughout, no single supplement on selected departure dates (we match solo travellers to small-group cruise vessels to remove the cabin surcharge), and a pre-trip briefing with one of our Cairo team to calibrate the holiday to your pace and interests.

The hallmarks

The hallmarks of a solo Egypt holiday

Egypt is a genuinely excellent solo travel destination – in large part because a private guide changes the experience entirely. Where a solo traveller on a group tour listens to the same script as nineteen other people, a solo traveller with a private Egyptologist can ask exactly what they want, linger where they're interested, and skip what they're not. Picture standing alone in the morning at the entrance to Karnak with just your guide, the call to prayer drifting across the East Bank.

Our solo Egypt holidays include private guiding throughout, no single supplement on selected departure dates (we match solo travellers to dahabiya cabins where the supplement waiver applies), and a pre-trip call with one of our Cairo team to calibrate the pace and interests to your travel style. Solo female travellers get a separate briefing on dress code and where the guide presence helps most. Solo Egypt holidays start around £1,300 per person for 7 days at 4-star – or £1,075 on no-supplement dates, same as the per-person twin-share price.

How to choose

How to choose your solo Egypt holiday

Three pillars decide the shape of a solo Egypt holiday. The single supplement is the question we hear most.

Your supplement choice

No-supplement dahabiya departures are our best-value solo option – we match you to a 6-cabin dahabiya cabin where the supplement is waived (May–June, September–October, late November, February to mid-March). On other dates the supplement runs 20–40% on top of the per-person price; we always disclose the figure upfront in the quote and offer the next no-supplement date as an alternative.

Your guiding style

Fully private throughout – your own Egyptologist with you at every temple, every transfer, every meal you'd like. Group + private hybrid – your own guide on the temple days, joining a small-group Nile cruise (6 to 8 other guests) for the social cruise segment. The second is what most of our solo female clients choose for the cruise leg.

Your safety preferences

Solo female: modest dress at religious sites is required, not optional; a lightweight scarf handles head-covering at the mosques in Khan el-Khalili. Tourist areas are safe and well-policed; vendor attention is heavier in bazaars where the guide presence helps. Solo male: vendor attention at the Pyramids is the main friction; the guide manages it. We brief each solo client individually before departure.

  3. Adelaide Dahabiya Nile Cruise

    Adelaide Dahabiya Nile Cruise

    Nile (cruise route)

Sail the Nile aboard the Adelaide Dahabiya for seven days, cruising at a slower, sail-influenced pace that prioritises time ashore. This is a small-boat alternative to four-night motor-ship cruises; the slower schedule lets you visit quieter riverbanks and villages. We arrange private Egyptologists and short road transfers rather than large coach movements. Expect smaller cabins and fewer onboard facilities than a large river cruise ship, and variable sail timings when wind conditions change. We operate Adelaide Dahabiya as a licensed Egyptian tour operator and provide local crew, fuel-powered backup, and all on-shore logistics.

We hand-picked this dahabiya for travellers who prefer personalised service, chef-prepared meals and access to shallower reaches larger motor cruisers cannot visit. The vessel's shore excursion programme includes Karnak, Luxor Temple, Edfu (Temple of Horus), Kom Ombo, Philae and the Valley of the Kings, with stops at Gebel Silsila and El Kab when conditions permit. The vessel sails weekly in both directions between Luxor and Aswan.

We operate small dahabiyas and do not run group bus tours; that keeps mornings and landings flexible. Unlike larger Nile cruise ships, this itinerary prioritises sailing time and evenings at village quays rather than fixed port turnarounds. Standard site entrance fees are included; pyramid interiors and premium tombs are extra and not included unless requested. Expect simpler cabins, occasional river noise and fewer onboard facilities during sail days. Arranged by Discovery Tours Egypt, a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

The vessel sails weekly in both directions between Luxor and Aswan, and alternates sailing days with excursions to Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. The museum includes the Royal Mummies Hall (mummies transferred in 2021) and specialist galleries covering archaeology, Coptic, Islamic and contemporary collections. We schedule private, timed visits with one of our Egyptologists; unlike mass tours, we avoid the museum’s peak rotation times. Allow 2–3 hours for a focused visit; mornings reduce the likelihood of encountering school groups. Standard entrance fees are included; private transfers, gratuities and special access are extra. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and issue timed tickets on your behalf.

Day two covers the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir area; day three visits Coptic and Islamic Cairo including the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Unlike cruise-ship day trips, two nights in Cairo let you schedule Giza at dawn and a calmer afternoon for the Museum. Standard site fees are included; the Khufu pyramid interior, premium tombs (Tutankhamun/Seti I) and gratuities are excluded. Expect early starts, busy sites and limited shade at Giza; modest dress is required for mosques.

    Graeco-Roman Museum, Alexandria

    Alexandria

The Graeco-Roman Museum in Alexandria exhibits mosaics, statues and domestic artefacts from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Allow 45–60 minutes for a focused visit. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator we arrange timed tickets and private guided visits with our Alexandria Egyptologists. We don't treat this as a rushed stop; our visits prioritise the key Kom el-Dikka mosaics and epigraphic panels. Unlike the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the collection concentrates on provincial Alexandria and urban Roman life. Small galleries and limited seating mean this site suits a concentrated visit; we commonly combine it with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina or Kom el-Dikka excavations.

Standard museum entrance fees are included; premium or temporary exhibition surcharges are extra. Our Egyptologists explain provenance, conservation and display context, and we arrange the car, driver and a relaxed lunch stop in central Cairo. Trade-offs: the Egyptian Museum (Tahrir) can be crowded and has older cases and queues during peak hours. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange room reservations, airport and local transfers, and private Egyptologists for visits to Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple and the West Bank necropolis. We prefer land-based hotels for longer stays because they avoid daily packing and provide a consistent overnight address, unlike short Nile-cruise nights that move every day. Expect early starts for Valley of the Kings visits, possible town traffic at peak hours, and the usual hot, dry afternoons in summer.

    Pyramisa Isis Luxor

    Luxor

Pyramisa Isis Luxor sits on Luxor's Corniche with Nile-facing rooms and straightforward access to Luxor Temple. We pair the hotel with one of our Egyptologists for private, half-day guided visits; unlike cruise-ship shore calls, this keeps start times flexible. Rooms with Nile views are popular for morning light but can be busier in high season. Daytime heat can be intense between April and October; we recommend early-morning visits and a late-afternoon rest. We arrange private transfers, guided excursions, and room requests on your behalf as a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Sonesta St. George sits on Luxor’s Nile Corniche on the East Bank, a short drive from Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and arrange private transfers, Egyptologist-guided pickups and timed-entry tickets where available. Distinctive POV: we do not run large coach arrivals; private transfers reduce waiting and help with early starts. Compared with cruise-based stays, staying on the East Bank cuts crossing time to West Bank sites in the morning. Trade-offs: Corniche traffic can be audible in road-side rooms and riverside rooms face more sun in mid-afternoon.

We don't sell group-bus arrival transfers for this property; we use private cars so arrival times match flights and dive bookings. Unlike remote Red Sea resorts, this hotel places guests within easy reach of shops, dive centres and evening restaurants. Some rooms face the street and can be noisy after 22:00; beachfront rooms are limited and often carry a supplement. Temperatures in summer often exceed 35°C; we recommend morning snorkeling and early transfers to avoid heat.

    Sofitel Winter Palace, Luxor

    Luxor

The Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor is a historic Nile-front hotel opened in 1907 and set within walled gardens. Its location on the corniche places Luxor Temple a short walk away, with Karnak Temple reachable by a brief transfer. We prefer the Winter Palace when clients want a town-centre base with formal gardens and direct access to shops and museums, rather than a river-cruise cabin. Rooms in the original Palace wing retain period proportions; some have lower ceilings and smaller bathrooms, so consider a garden- or Nile-view room for a more modern layout. As a licensed Egyptian tour operator, we arrange private transfers, room requests and early museum access.

Naama Bay restaurants, cafés and dive operators are a short walk from the hotel. We use Jaz NEO for brief stopovers rather than extended resort weeks; unlike larger Red Sea resorts, its facilities are compact and location-focused. Trade-offs include fewer onsite leisure facilities and possible evening promenade noise. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and can arrange private transfers and diving bookings on request.

    Radisson Blu, Cairo

Radisson Blu in Cairo provides international-standard rooms and practical services; we book it often for arrival and departure nights. We prefer Radisson Blu when clients need predictable logistics: unlike small boutique hotels, its straightforward reception and transport options reduce risk on late or early flights. We arrange airport transfers, early check-in requests where possible, and private cars for onward Cairo sightseeing. Trade-offs: this is a business-style hotel rather than a heritage property, and you should expect standard city traffic noise rather than a quiet garden setting. Steigenberger Cairo Pyramids Hotel is a bed-and-breakfast hotel in Giza, about 3.5 km (12-minute drive) from the Giza Plateau. We use this hotel for short Giza transfers and early starts to Khufu; unlike inner‑Cairo hotels, it typically reduces morning drive time to the plateau. Breakfast is included and we arrange airport transfers and pyramid-site excursions through our team. Selected rooms have views of the Giza Plateau; those rooms must be requested at booking as availability is limited. Peak-traffic transfers can add 20–40 minutes. AZAL Pyramids Hotel is a Giza property we arrange for travellers visiting the Giza Plateau. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and our Cairo team handles on-the-ground logistics. We prefer to schedule Pyramid visits early in the morning from Giza hotels to avoid afternoon traffic; we do not run large coach groups from here. Rooms are straightforward and some offer rooftop sightlines toward Khufu and the Sphinx; rooftop exposure and street noise vary. Unlike downtown Cairo hotels, a Giza base shortens transfers to the Giza Plateau. We can add private transfers and guided visits on request.

We do not run coach-group check-ins; most guests take our private car at dawn for an uninterrupted visit. We favour it for single-night stopovers because it places guests on the Corniche at sunset without central traffic. Montazah Royal Gardens and Montazah Palace lie a short drive away; Qaitbay Citadel is reachable by Corniche drive. Unlike hotels in Zamalek, Safir often provides easier coach parking and simpler group check-in processes. Trade-offs include fewer on-site leisure facilities than higher-tier Cairo hotels and some dated room decor; service can be slower at peak times. We are a licensed Egyptian tour operator and we arrange private transfer from Aswan hotels or the Nile port. We don't run large coach groups; using a private car lets you set the pace and avoid fixed coach timetables common on cruise-ship excursions. Expect a clear contrast: the High Dam is 20th-century concrete engineering, while the Unfinished Obelisk shows ancient stone-working in situ. Trade-offs: the dam area has limited shade at midday and the quarry requires walking on uneven rock and steps.

Practical questions

What clients ask about this style of holiday.

  1. 01Is Egypt safe for solo travellers?

Yes – particularly with a private guide. The mainstream tourist circuit is safe and well-policed. Solo female travellers: modest dress (covered shoulders and knees at religious sites) reduces unwanted attention; we brief solo female clients individually. Solo male travellers encounter persistent vendor attention near the Pyramids and in bazaars, which a guide manages efficiently. In both cases, having an in-country contact number and being met at the airport removes the most common friction points.

  2. 02Do solo travellers pay a single supplement for Egypt holidays?

On private land holidays, hotels charge a single supplement (typically 20–40% on top of the per-person price). On Nile cruise ships, we can match solo travellers to cabin-share options on selected vessels to eliminate the supplement. We always disclose the single supplement figure upfront in the quote and offer alternatives where available.

  3. 03How much does a solo Egypt holiday cost from the UK?

Solo Egypt holidays start around £1,300 per person for 7 days at 4-star, including the standard single supplement. On selected departure dates we waive the supplement entirely (cabin-share on the cruise + designated solo-friendly hotel rates) which brings 7-day solo holidays to around £1,075 – same as the per-person twin-share price. The team flags the no-supplement dates upfront; if none align with your window, we honestly compare the supplement cost to small-group alternatives.

  4. 04Is Egypt good for solo female travellers?

Yes, with caveats worth knowing in advance. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees at religious sites, lightweight scarf for the Coptic churches) significantly reduces unwanted attention. Tourist areas (Cairo Pyramids, Luxor temples, Nile cruise) are well-policed and the in-country team meets you at every transfer. Bazaar areas (Khan el-Khalili) and Cairo street life are where solo female clients most often appreciate the guide presence. Many of our most enthusiastic solo female reviews come from second-trip clients who specifically chose Egypt over alternatives.

  5. 05What's the best Egypt itinerary for a first solo holiday?

We typically suggest 9–10 days for a first solo holiday: 2 nights Cairo (Pyramids, GEM) → fly to Luxor → 2 nights Luxor (East Bank, West Bank) → 4-night Nile cruise → 2 nights Aswan + Abu Simbel. The dahabiya (6–12 guests) is the secret weapon for solo cruise experience – small-group dynamics, automatic dinner companions, no cabin solitude. We can match solo travellers to specific dahabiya departures with high solo-traveller ratios.
