02Overview
A first look
This twin-centre holiday pairs Egypt's finest temples with a proper rest by the sea. You fly into Luxor and stay four nights, seeing Karnak and Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple, and making a day trip to Dendara and Abydos. There is no Cairo and no internal flight.
On day 5 you travel by private car to Hurghada, about five hours, and stay there five nights. The Red Sea days bring snorkelling at Orange Bay, a free day, a semi-submarine trip and a desert evening on quad bikes. You fly home from Hurghada. Day by day
Detailed itinerary
10 Days / 9 Nights · Luxor · Karnak Temple · Luxor Temple · Valley of the Kings · Hatshepsut Temple · Colossi of Memnon
- 1
A driver is waiting at Luxor Airport and takes you into the city to your hotel. The evening is free, so rest, wander down towards the Nile and get your bearings. No meals are arranged for today.
- 2
Your Egyptologist guide takes you round the East Bank. Karnak is the biggest temple complex in Egypt, and Luxor Temple sits a short drive away beside the river. The guide, the entrance fees and the air-conditioned car between the sites are all included.
- 3
This West Bank tour lasts about six hours with your Egyptologist. Three tombs in the Valley of the Kings are covered by your tickets. After them come Hatshepsut's temple and the two Colossi of Memnon. You are driven from the hotel and back in an air-conditioned vehicle.
- 4
Today you leave Luxor for two further temples, Dendara and Abydos, with your Egyptologist. All entrance fees and the air-conditioned transport between the sites are included. You stop for lunch at a local restaurant, then come back to Luxor for your last night there.
- 5
This is the move from Luxor to the Red Sea. After breakfast a private, air-conditioned car takes you to Hurghada, a drive of around five hours. Nothing is planned along the way, and once you reach your hotel the rest of the day is yours.
- 6
A boat collects you from the hotel transfer point for the crossing to Orange Bay on Giftun Island. Two guided snorkelling sessions are run, with equipment and life jackets supplied, and you have a sunbed on the beach. Lunch is hot and water is provided. The boat returns you to Hurghada.
- 7
We have left today empty. Spend it by the pool or on the beach, or ask us if you would like an optional trip. After a busy start in Luxor, most guests are glad of it.
- 8
A relaxed three-hour outing. You are picked up from your hotel for a two-hour semi-submarine trip, shared with other guests, which lets you watch the reef from below the surface. There is a swim stop too, with mask and snorkel, and a soft drink and water on board.
- 9
This five-hour excursion heads into the desert outside Hurghada. A safari guide leads the quad bikes, with a helmet for each rider; you can share a bike if you prefer. At the camp you can try a short camel ride before a barbecue dinner with soft drinks, tea and water, and a folklore show. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel are included.
- 10
After breakfast you check out and a driver takes you to Hurghada Airport, a drive of about an hour. Send us your flight details beforehand and we will set the pickup time. The holiday ends at the airport.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Reach Karnak at opening time to stroll the Hypostyle Hall in cooler air and soft light, before the coaches roll in.
- 02
Cameras stay outside the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, so spend that time reading the wall paintings.
- 03
At Dendera, look up in the chapels for the star ceiling, then take the stairs to the roof for the view.
- 04
Bring a long-sleeved swim top for Giftun Island; the sea breeze hides how fierce the sun is out on the water.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Guests who want Egypt's temples and a seaside stay in one holiday, without Cairo or internal flights. It suits couples, friends and families who can cope with a long drive and some snorkelling.
Maybe not, if
- Anyone who needs step-free access to every site, or who wants Cairo and the Pyramids. The Luxor days involve a lot of walking over uneven stone.
Honest assessment
The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.

- A single change of hotel and no internal flight
- Two sea trips and a free day keep the second half relaxed
Things to Consider
- No Cairo and no Pyramids
- A five-hour car journey on day 5

Where it fits
A good fit if you want temples and a beach but not Cairo. The Pyramids are not included, so ask about adding them if they matter.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Most Egyptian itineraries begin in Cairo and depend on internal flights. This one has neither. A private car joins Luxor to Hurghada, so you change hotel once and skip the airports in between.

Children are welcome. Each child has a seat in the vehicle, so transport, guiding and meals are charged at the adult rate whatever their age. Entrance tickets are free for under-6s and full price from six. Hotel prices depend on the child's age and the room used, so we quote the exact figure once you give us the age when booking. Do tell us the age before the quad bike evening, since the excursion supplier sets its own rules for riders.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Days 2 to 4 in Luxor mean plenty of walking around big temple sites, over uneven stone and steps, with some narrow tomb corridors and very little shade at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. The Red Sea days include getting on and off boats, and the quad day is over rough desert. Our cars are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site or on every boat. Let us know what you need when you book and we will be frank about what suits.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
There are no internal flights on this holiday, as the Luxor to Hurghada leg is a private road transfer; vehicles vary, so we make no claim about carbon. Sightseeing is led by local Egyptologists and booked through suppliers in Luxor and Hurghada, so a good share of your spending stays there. Please keep clear of the coral when snorkelling, bring a refillable water bottle and do not touch the painted walls in the tombs.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Will I make my international flight home?
Your international tickets are a separate booking from this holiday, so we cannot guarantee a connection. There are no internal flights here, and on day 10 you leave from Hurghada Airport, about an hour from the hotel. If you connect onward on the same day, pick an afternoon or evening departure, not an early-morning one. Do take travel insurance that covers missed connections.02Are international flights included?
No. You need to book flights into Luxor and home from Hurghada yourself. You arrive at Luxor Airport on day 1 and depart from Hurghada Airport on day 10, so an open-jaw ticket or two single flights will suit.03Do we fly between Luxor and Hurghada?
No. On day 5 you go by private, air-conditioned car, which takes around five hours. It takes up much of the day, so nothing else is planned.04Which hotels will we stay in?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we name the hotels for your dates. You spend four nights in Luxor and five in Hurghada. The programme is identical at every standard.05Can non-swimmers do the snorkelling?
Life jackets are provided at Orange Bay, but you should be at ease in the water. On day 8 the semi-submarine lets you see the reef without swimming, and the swim stop is optional.06How demanding is the quad bike safari?
It is guided, on desert tracks, and lasts around five hours including the camp. You get a helmet and a guide, and you may share a bike. Tell us if anyone has back or neck trouble.07Does the holiday include the Pyramids?
No, there is no Cairo on this itinerary. If the Pyramids matter to you, ask about a longer holiday that adds them.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and meals not listed, travel insurance and personal spending.09When is the best time to go?
October to April suits temple walking best, and the sea is still pleasant for a boat day. Luxor is very hot in summer, so sightseeing starts early, and Hurghada gets busy with beach visitors.
