A first look
This holiday does the history first and the seaside after. Cairo comes first: a Nile dinner cruise on arrival, then a full day at Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day 3 is a day trip to Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast. You then fly south to Luxor for Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon.
From Luxor a private car takes you to Hurghada, where you spend four nights on the Red Sea. The days there include a quad bike safari with a Bedouin dinner, a day snorkelling at Orange Bay on Giftun Island, and a free day. You fly back to Cairo to see Islamic and Coptic Cairo, with a last night there before you fly home. We organise the flights, all transfers and your hotels. Day by day
Detailed itinerary
11 Days / 10 Nights · Cairo · Alexandria · Luxor · Hurghada
- 1
A driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel, where you can rest after the journey. Later you are collected for a Nile dinner cruise. It lasts around two hours, with an open buffet, a live show and the lights of Cairo along the banks. You are driven back to your hotel afterwards.
- 2
Your own English-speaking Egyptologist collects you from the hotel for a full day. First comes the Giza Plateau, with the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, where the visit takes 4 to 6 hours. After lunch you go on to the Grand Egyptian Museum, and then you are driven back to the hotel. Entrance fees, transport and bottled water are included.
- 3
Expect a long day of about 12 hours including the drives, which suits those who enjoy walking. Your Egyptologist goes with you to Alexandria. The stops are the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the modern library, the Citadel of Qaitbay and the gardens of Montaza Palace, with lunch looking out over the Mediterranean. You then drive back to Cairo for a third night.
Entrance fees to the listed sites, transport and bottled water are included.
- 4
After breakfast you go to Cairo Airport for the internal flight to Luxor and then to your hotel. A licensed Egyptologist takes you to the East Bank to see Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple. Entrance fees, transport between the sites and bottled water are included. We plan the sightseeing around your flight time. Lunch and dinner are not included today.
- 5
Your Egyptologist leads you across the river to the West Bank, where you visit the Valley of the Kings, with three tombs included, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Transport and entrance fees are included. The rest of the day is yours to spend in Luxor.
- 6
A private air-conditioned car takes you from Luxor to Hurghada, on the Red Sea coast. The journey takes around 5 hours. No sightseeing is planned, so you can settle in at your hotel for the rest of the day.
- 7
This is an activity of around 5 hours. You are collected from your hotel for a quad bike ride into the desert, with a safari guide and a helmet. You get a quad each, or can share one between two if you ask. At the camp you have a short camel ride, a barbecue dinner with soft drinks, tea and water, and a folklore show before being driven back to the hotel.
- 8
You are picked up at your hotel and taken by motorboat to Orange Bay on Giftun Island. There are two guided snorkelling sessions, with snorkel gear and life jackets provided, and a sunbed on the beach. A hot lunch and bottled water are included. The boat then brings you back to Hurghada and you are driven to your hotel.
- 9
Today is yours, with nothing planned. You can swim, rest by the sea or the hotel pool, or ask us about extra trips while you are in Hurghada. Only breakfast is included, so you pay for lunch and dinner yourself.
- 10
A transfer takes you to Hurghada Airport for the internal flight to Cairo, and then to your hotel. You then spend around 6 hours with your private Egyptologist in old Cairo. You see the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and Coptic Cairo with the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, stopping for lunch in Old Cairo.
Entrance fees to the mosques and the Citadel, transport and bottled water are included. We plan the sightseeing around your flight time.
- 11
You have breakfast, then a private transfer takes you from the hotel to Cairo Airport for your flight home. There is nothing else planned, so you can leave for the airport without hurrying.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
At Giza, the east side of the Khufu pyramid usually has the best morning light.
- 02
Alexandria’s Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are often quieter before late morning groups arrive.
- 03
Karnak is more comfortable before 11am, when the open courts hold less heat.
- 04
In Khan El Khalili, ask before taking photos inside shops and small cafes.
- 05
Morning snorkelling in Hurghada usually means calmer water and better visibility.

Entrance tickets are free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel prices depend on the child's age and the room used. The quad bike safari and the snorkelling trip may have age or ability limits, so give us your children's ages when you book and we will confirm what they can join. Days 3, 4 and 10 are long for young children.
Accessibility
Who can join this
The sightseeing days involve a good deal of walking around large archaeological sites, on uneven stone and sand, with steps and some narrow tomb passages. Karnak and the Valley of the Kings have long, open stretches with little shade. The quad bike safari and the boat to Orange Bay call for good mobility, and boarding the boat involves steps. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses two internal flights, long private road transfers, a quad bike safari and a motorboat trip, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Sightseeing is led by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Hurghada, so a good share of what you spend stays in the places you visit. At the Red Sea we ask guests not to touch or stand on coral, and to bring a refillable water bottle.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the internal flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Luxor on day 4 and from Hurghada to Cairo on day 10 are booked for you, with a 23 kg bag each. Between Luxor and Hurghada on day 6 you travel by private car, which takes around 5 hours. International flights are not included.02Will I catch my flight home?
Internal and international tickets are separate bookings, so a late internal flight can make you miss the connection. For that reason the holiday ends with a last night in Cairo after the flight from Hurghada. If you change the plan and fly into Cairo to connect on the same day, book a late-evening or night international flight and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.03How tiring is the Alexandria day?
It lasts around 12 hours including the drives, so it is a long day and suits those who like walking. You see the catacombs, the Qaitbay Citadel and Montaza Palace Gardens, with lunch by the Mediterranean.04Which hotels will we stay in?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotels for your dates. You stay four nights in Cairo, two in Luxor and four in Hurghada, all with breakfast. The sightseeing is identical at every standard.05Are the guide and entrance fees included?
On the sightseeing days in Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor they are: a licensed Egyptologist, air-conditioned transport and entrance fees to the listed sites, with three tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The trips in Hurghada have their own guides.06Do I need to have ridden a quad bike before?
The safari comes with a guide and a helmet, and you can share a bike with a companion if you ask. Tell us when you book about your experience and any age or health limits, and we will confirm the ride suits you.07What happens on the free day?
Day 9 has nothing planned. You can swim, rest by the sea or ask us about extra trips. Only breakfast is included that day.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and meals other than those stated, extras such as going inside the Great Pyramid or visiting premium tombs, and travel insurance.09When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and best for sightseeing. Luxor can pass 40 C in summer, so days start early. The Red Sea stays warm enough for snorkelling for much of the year.
