02Overview
A first look
The first day of this holiday is 24 March 2027, which puts Easter Sunday, 28 March, aboard the Nile cruise ship. Most UK school Easter holidays run from around 20 March to 5 April that year, so the dates suit a family break as well as a couple's trip.
It begins in Cairo, with the Giza Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, a walk through the old city and a sunset felucca. You then fly south to Aswan and spend three nights on a Nile cruise ship, sailing to Luxor and calling at Philae, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. The holiday finishes with four nights at El Gouna, a lagoon resort town on the Red Sea, where two boat days leave time for snorkelling. You pick the standard of hotel and ship when you book, and the sightseeing doesn't change.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
11 Days / 10 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Egyptian Museum · Islamic Cairo · Aswan · Philae Temple
- 1
Our representative greets you once you are through passport control at Cairo Airport, and you are driven to your hotel, roughly an hour. When you have had a chance to freshen up, a private guide and driver collect you for an evening in the city.
The Cairo Tower lift takes you to the top for a view across the lights, and then you stroll into the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and sit down for tea at a traditional cafe. The outing is about four hours. Dinner is not included.
- 2
You have two half-day visits with a private Egyptologist, each with hotel pickup and a private air-conditioned car. First comes the Giza plateau, where you see the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, with a coffee or tea stop, over about four hours.
The second visit is the Egyptian Museum, entered without the ticket queue, with Old and Middle Kingdom masterpieces, papyri and animal mummies, again about four hours. The Mummies Room is not on the ticket. Lunch is not arranged, so you can eat in the gap between the two visits.
- 3
Your morning is a guided stroll of three to four hours through the medieval city. You walk along Al-Muizz Street, with its mosques and old gateways, and finish in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. An Egyptologist goes with you, and a private car picks you up and brings you back. The afternoon is yours.
As the light softens you go to the river for a sunset sail in a felucca, the traditional Nile sailing boat, before returning to your hotel.
- 4
You are driven from your Cairo hotel to the airport for the flight south to Aswan, at a time set by the airline. A driver meets you in Aswan, and the first of four days of cruise sightseeing begins, with an English-speaking Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transport all included. You visit Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk before moving into your cabin.
On this first evening you go to the Philae sound and light show, with a motorboat across to Agilkia Island; the ticket is included. Meals on board are full board.
- 5
Easter Sunday in the western calendar is today, 28 March 2027, and you celebrate it on the Nile. No Easter service or event is planned in the itinerary, so what you get is the river itself. The ship heads north, and you go ashore at Kom Ombo, a double temple for the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus, standing above the water on the bank.
Your Egyptologist, the ticket and the transport are included. The afternoon is for the sun deck and the passing palm groves.
- 6
The ship continues towards Luxor, and you disembark at Edfu to visit the Temple of Horus, among the best-preserved temples in the country. When you reach Luxor you are taken to Luxor Temple and then to Karnak, the vast temple complex whose features include the Sacred Lake. Your Egyptologist, the tickets and the transport are all included. Tonight is your last aboard.
- 7
You leave the ship after breakfast and cross the river to the West Bank with your Egyptologist. The Valley of the Kings comes first, with three tombs on your ticket, followed by Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari and a stop at the Colossi of Memnon. After that a private air-conditioned car takes you from Luxor to El Gouna, a journey of about 5 to 6 hours.
This is a long day, so have water and a snack within reach. You reach your hotel on the Red Sea in the evening.
- 8
You are picked up at your El Gouna hotel and driven to a boat that you share with other guests, for a trip of around eight hours altogether. Paradise Island gives you a sunbed and parasol, and a guide leads the group snorkelling, with mask, snorkel and fins supplied. Lunch comes on board with soft drinks and water, and the marine park fees are paid.
You are back at the hotel in the evening, which is welcome after yesterday's drive from Luxor.
- 9
A gentler day. A local English-speaking guide and a shared air-conditioned minibus show you Hurghada over about four hours, taking in the marina, a mosque, the old town and a market, with bottled water provided. The rest of the day is free for the hotel, the lagoon or the pool.
- 10
For your last full day the boat is for your party alone. A captain and crew take you out from Hurghada for about seven hours to the islands and reefs, with a guide for the snorkelling and equipment supplied. Lunch on board comes with soft drinks and water, and the marine park fees and private hotel transfers are covered. The pace is yours, within what the captain advises on the day.
- 11
Once you have had breakfast and checked out, a private air-conditioned car runs you from El Gouna to Hurghada Airport, about an hour, where a meet and assist representative helps you check in. The holiday ends here. Book your flight home from Hurghada, or ask us about the connection if you plan to fly onward from another airport.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Easter weather in Egypt is warm rather than fierce, but take a thin jumper for evenings on the river and a sunhat for the temples.
- 02
Stroll along Al-Muizz Street towards dusk, when the medieval gates are softly lit and the shopfronts begin to glow.
- 03
At the Philae sound and light show, sit towards the back so the whole temple front is in view as it is lit.
- 04
The Red Sea fills up over the Easter period, so decide on your snorkelling plans early and pack your own mask if you have one.

Entrance tickets are free for children under 6 and full price from 6. Accessibility
Who can join this
The Cairo, Aswan and Luxor days involve a good deal of walking over uneven stone and steps, with a few narrow tomb passages and little shade at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. The Cairo walk takes in a busy old street and a crowded bazaar. Getting on the ship, the boat to Philae, the felucca and the boats at El Gouna all mean steps or a gangway. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we can't promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say frankly which parts would suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses one internal flight, a Nile cruise ship, road transfers and day boats on the Red Sea, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Days are led by local Egyptologists and run by suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Hurghada, so a good part of what you spend stays in the places you visit. We ask guests to bring a refillable water bottle, to leave the painted tomb walls untouched and to keep fins and hands away from the coral when snorkelling.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Why are the dates set around Easter 2027?
Day 1 is 24 March 2027, which puts Easter Sunday, 28 March, on day 5, aboard the ship. UK school Easter holidays run from around 20 March to 5 April that year. Ask us if you need other start dates.02Is there anything planned for Easter Sunday?
There is no special service or event in the itinerary. Easter Sunday is a day of sailing with a visit to Kom Ombo. If you would like a church service in Cairo before the cruise, tell us when you book and we will see what can be done.03Will I make my flight home?
The domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, and the holiday ends at Hurghada, so plan carefully. We can advise on flights home. Take travel insurance that covers missed connections. If you have to connect through Cairo on the day, pick a late-evening or night departure.04How many nights are spent on the Nile?
Three nights, from Aswan to Luxor, on full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner. The other seven nights are in hotels: three in Cairo and four at El Gouna, with breakfast.05Does the price cover the Philae sound and light show?
Yes. The ticket for the Philae sound and light show is in the price, along with a boat across to the island on the first evening, the daytime sightseeing and the entrance fees.06How far is it from Luxor to El Gouna?
It takes about 5 to 6 hours by private air-conditioned car, on day 7 after the West Bank. It is a long day, so keep water and a snack handy.07Which hotels and which ship will we stay on?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the ship and hotels for your dates. The route and sightseeing are the same whichever you choose.08Does this holiday go to Abu Simbel?
No. Abu Simbel is not part of this itinerary. If you would like it, ask about a longer holiday.09What about Orthodox Easter and Sham el-Nessim?
Orthodox Easter is on 2 May 2027 and Sham el-Nessim, the spring festival, is on 3 May, both after this holiday ends. Around those dates the beaches, parks and sites fill up with Egyptian families, so avoid them if you want a quieter trip.
