Prices start at £2,431 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
Most Egypt itineraries stop at the temples. This one carries on to the Red Sea, so the second half feels like a holiday in its own right. The first nine days cover the great sights: Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the old quarters of Cairo, then a flight to Aswan and three nights on a Nile cruise ship calling at Philae, Abu Simbel, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor and Karnak. Two further nights in Luxor include the Valley of the Kings and Dendera.
Two flights then take you to Sinai, and you stay seven nights in a single Sharm El Sheikh hotel. From there you go out on day trips: Ras Mohammed National Park, a dawn ascent of Mount Sinai, Dahab and Tiran Island. Some of those days are long and tiring, and we describe them frankly. We organise every flight, transfer, hotel and your cabin. You choose the standard of hotel and ship, and the sightseeing stays the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
16 Days / 15 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Grand Egyptian Museum · Aswan · Abu Simbel · Kom Ombo
- 1
Our representative greets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel, around an hour's drive. The day is yours to rest. In the evening a private car collects you for a three-hour cruise on the river, boarding as the light turns golden. You help yourself from a large buffet and watch a live show, then are driven back to the hotel.
- 2
You are picked up at your hotel for a day of about eight hours with your Egyptologist. The Giza Plateau, with its pyramids and the Great Sphinx, comes first, and a visit there usually takes four to six hours. You then have lunch with a view of the monuments and spend the afternoon in the Grand Egyptian Museum. Entrance fees, bottled water and an air-conditioned car are included.
- 3
This is a calmer day of around six hours, spent among Cairo's mosques and churches. Your private guide takes you to the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, then up to Saladin's Citadel and the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali. There is a break for lunch in Old Cairo before you reach the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus.
A driver and a vehicle with air conditioning are included, as are the fees for the mosques and the Citadel.
- 4
After the transfer to Cairo Airport you fly to Aswan, where a driver takes you to the Nile. Sightseeing for the cruise begins at once: you see Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. You then board your ship, find your cabin and have dinner on board. The Egyptologist guide, the entrance fees and the transport for these visits are part of the cruise sightseeing.
- 5
Expect a very early alarm. From the moored ship you travel by road to Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II's two rock temples stand in the first light. It takes up the whole morning, and you return to the ship for lunch. After that the ship leaves its mooring, heading north, and you stop to see the twin temple of Kom Ombo. The guide, entrance fees and transport are included.
- 6
The Temple of Horus at Edfu starts the day. Once the ship reaches Luxor, your guide leads you around Luxor Temple and the great complex at Karnak, including its Sacred Lake. There is a lot of ground to cover, mostly on foot over stone. Tonight is your final night on the ship. Fees, guiding and transport are all taken care of.
- 7
Once you have had breakfast and left the ship, you cross the river to the West Bank. The Valley of the Kings comes first, with entry to three tombs, then Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. Your guide, the tickets and the transport are included. Later a transfer drops you in downtown Luxor at your hotel.
- 8
You set off by private car with an Egyptologist for the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, a half-day outing of about six hours including the drive. Lunch is at a local restaurant. When you are back in Luxor you spend the rest of the day at the Luxor Museum, a quieter way to look at the statues and objects that connect the temples you have already seen.
- 9
Today is for travelling. A transfer takes you to Luxor Airport for a flight to Cairo, followed by a second flight to Sharm El Sheikh. The airline sets the times, so we have not planned any sightseeing. On arrival a private car drives you to your hotel, which is where you stay for the following seven nights. Luggage is covered on both flights.
- 10
An air-conditioned minibus, shared with other guests, picks you up for Ras Mohammed National Park on the southern tip of Sinai. The excursion runs for about six hours. With an English-speaking guide you snorkel, using the mask and snorkel provided, and see the Magic Lake. A picnic lunch and water are included, as is the national park fee.
- 11
Be warned: this is the most demanding day of the holiday, about 17 hours long, and nothing else is planned. You set off during the night and spend roughly three hours climbing Mount Sinai in the dark and the cold, led by a Bedouin guide. The last 750 steps are rock and are taken on foot. After sunrise you descend and have breakfast, then go on to St Catherine's Monastery.
You return late, with little sleep behind you.
- 12
After a night on the mountain you are not asked to get up early today. Have breakfast when you like. Later on a minibus collects you for a semi-submarine and glass-bottom boat trip, about three hours in all, of which around 90 minutes are spent looking at the reef. A soft drink and water come with it. The evening is free.
- 13
Plan for about 11 hours out in a jeep; it is the only thing on today's schedule. You travel in a shared jeep with a driver and an English-speaking guide, and a Bedouin guide takes you through the Coloured Canyon. You go on to the Blue Hole and into Dahab, where you snorkel with the equipment provided and eat lunch at a restaurant by the sea. The tracks are bumpy, so wear sensible shoes.
- 14
Yesterday's trip was long, so today starts late and the morning is free for the pool or the beach. In the late afternoon a minibus takes you on a city tour of about four hours, taking in the Old Market, the Al Sahaba Mosque and SOHO Square. A local guide who speaks English goes with you, and bottled water is supplied.
- 15
You share a boat with other guests for a day of about eight hours around Tiran Island. A snorkelling guide looks after the swims, and a mask, snorkel and fins are provided. Lunch is served on board along with soft drinks and water. The marine park fees are included. It makes a fitting final day on the coast before you leave.
- 16
Have breakfast and check out. A private transfer drives you to Sharm El Sheikh Airport and a representative helps with your bags. International flights are not part of the holiday, so choose yours with your check-out in mind. If you would like a gentler last day, we can add an extra night.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Take a head torch and a warm fleece for the Mount Sinai climb, as the pre-dawn walk is chilly all year round.
- 02
If you suffer from seasickness, take your tablets before the Tiran Island boat trip, as the open sea can get choppy.
- 03
Put on sturdy shoes at Ras Mohammed, because the paths around Magic Lake are rocky and exposed to the sun.
- 04
Bring a light shirt to cover your shoulders on the Abu Simbel day, as the long desert road is bright and hot.
Tailor it

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travellers who want a full Egypt holiday that finishes beside the Red Sea rather than in a city. A good fit for active couples, friends and families with grown-up children who are happy with some early starts and a few hard physical days.
Maybe not, if
- Young children on the Mount Sinai day, travellers with knee, heart or breathing problems, anyone needing step-free access, and those who want a gentle pace throughout.
Honest assessment
The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.
Highlights
- The pyramids, Abu Simbel, a Nile cruise and Mount Sinai on one holiday
- Seven nights in one Sharm hotel, so no repacking in the second half
- Flights, transfers, fees and guides all arranged for you
Things to Consider
- Day 11 lasts about 17 hours and includes a climb in the dark
- Day 13 is about 11 hours by jeep, and day 5 starts very early
- Most Sinai excursions are shared with other guests rather than private
Where it fits
A strong choice if you want history first and the sea afterwards. Look at a different holiday if the night climb of Mount Sinai and the long jeep day sound like too much.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Most Egypt holidays end in Luxor or Cairo. This one adds a week in Sinai, with a sunrise ascent of Mount Sinai, reef trips and Dahab, and all three internal flights booked for you. The standard of hotel and ship is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

Children & families
Children are welcome on the Cairo and Nile days. Every child has a seat in the vehicle, so transport, guiding and meals are charged at the adult rate at any age; hotel, cabin and excursion prices depend on the child's age, and we give you the exact figure once you tell us the age at booking. The Mount Sinai day, about 17 hours with a climb in the dark, is not suitable for young children. If you are travelling with children, talk to us before you book and we will suggest what to swap.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Most days involve plenty of walking over uneven ground. The Nile temples and the Valley of the Kings have steps, sand and long open stretches with little shade, and some tomb passages are narrow. Boarding the ship and the boats means a gangway or steps. Mount Sinai is the toughest day by far: roughly three hours uphill in the dark and cold, with the final 750 rock steps climbed on foot. We would not recommend it for young children or for anyone with knee, heart or breathing trouble. The Dahab and Tiran Island days involve rough jeep tracks and getting on and off a boat. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which days will suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses three internal flights, a Nile cruise ship, road transfers and day trips by minibus, jeep and boat, so we do not claim any carbon saving. Spending seven nights in one Sharm El Sheikh hotel keeps moving about to a minimum. Ras Mohammed, Tiran Island and the Dahab area are protected, and the fees paid go toward looking after them. We ask guests to carry a refillable bottle, stay clear of the coral and take their rubbish off the mountain.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01How tough is the Mount Sinai day?
It is the toughest day of the holiday. The excursion lasts about 17 hours. You climb for around three hours in the dark and cold, and the final 750 steps are cut into the rock and climbed on foot, before a visit to St Catherine's Monastery. It is not for young children, or for anyone with bad knees or heart or breathing problems. Take a head torch and warm layers.02Will I make my international flight home?
Our internal flights and your international ticket are separate bookings. There is no internal flight on day 16, since you travel by road from your Sharm hotel to the airport, so the risk is small. Even so, we suggest an afternoon or evening departure, travel insurance that covers missed connections, and an extra night in Sharm if you would like a relaxed last morning.03Which internal flights are included?
Cairo to Aswan on day 4, then Luxor to Cairo and Cairo to Sharm El Sheikh on day 9. Taxes and a 23 kg luggage allowance are included on both day 9 flights. The airline sets the times, so no other sightseeing is planned on those days.04How is Abu Simbel fitted into the cruise?
On the second cruise day you leave very early by road from the moored ship, visit the temples and return for lunch on board. The ship then moves on and you visit Kom Ombo. Philae and the High Dam are seen on the afternoon of day one.05Which ship and hotels will we stay in?
You pick a standard when you book, ranging from budget to luxury, and we name the ship and hotels for your dates. The sightseeing does not change between standards.06Are the Sinai excursions private?
Mostly not. Ras Mohammed, Mount Sinai, the semi-submarine, the Dahab jeep day, the city tour and Tiran Island all use vehicles or boats shared with other guests. Your Egyptologist is private in Cairo, on the Nile and in Luxor.07Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel?
Snorkelling features at Ras Mohammed, Dahab and Tiran Island, and you are free to stay on the shore or the boat. Masks and snorkels are provided. Tell your guide how confident you feel in the water.08What does the holiday not cover?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks other than those stated, the interior of Khufu's pyramid, premium tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and travel insurance.09When is the best time to travel?
October to April is cooler and better for the Nile temples. Summer is extremely hot in Luxor and Aswan, so days start early. It is cold on Mount Sinai before sunrise whatever the season.
