02Overview
A first look
A holiday planned around the sea. You fly into Hurghada and go to your hotel, and from day 2 there is one outing each day: a boat to Orange Bay on Giftun Island, a snorkelling trip to the Dolphin House reef, a semi-submarine ride and, on day 5, two guided intro dives.
Every day has a single excursion and the remaining hours are your own, for the pool, the beach or a wander into town. We arrange the airport transfers, your hotel and each trip listed. You pick the standard of hotel when you book, from budget to luxury, and the outings do not change. Boats go out when the weather and sea allow, and the captain decides on the day.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
6 Days / 5 Nights · Hurghada · Red Sea · Giftun Island · Orange Bay Island · Dolphin House
- 1
A driver meets you as you come out of Hurghada Airport and drives you to the hotel. There is nothing on the programme for the rest of the day, so unpack, have a swim or stroll to the water's edge. The boats begin tomorrow.
- 2
Once you have had breakfast, a driver picks you up and takes you to the marina. You cross by motorboat to Orange Bay on Giftun Island. Two guided snorkelling sessions are planned, with snorkelling equipment and life jackets supplied, and in between you can rest on the beach on your own sunbed. A hot lunch and bottled water are served ashore.
The boat returns to the marina and you are driven back to the hotel, with the evening free.
- 3
A day out afloat, around eight hours, on a boat you share with other guests. You are collected at the hotel and taken out to the Dolphin House reef, where a snorkelling guide goes in with you. Mask, snorkel and fins are provided, and the marine park fees are covered. Lunch is eaten on board, with soft drinks and water.
Dolphins do visit the reef that carries their name, but they are wild animals, so a sighting is likely at best and cannot be promised. The captain may alter the plan if the weather turns. You are returned to your hotel in the afternoon.
- 4
The easiest day of the week, an outing of roughly three hours. You are driven to the harbour and board a semi-submarine that you share with other guests. Its windows lie below the waterline, so you look at the reef and the fish while staying dry. The ride takes two hours and includes a swim stop, for which a mask and snorkel are handed out. You also get a soft drink and water.
A driver then returns you to the hotel and the remainder of the day is your own.
- 5
Your first day of diving, around eight hours aboard a dive boat shared with others. A certified instructor talks you through the basics, kits you out with the full scuba equipment and leads two guided intro dives. You need no previous experience.
A medical questionnaire comes first, and the dives are unsuitable for anyone with some conditions, including heart trouble, asthma or ear problems, or who is pregnant. This is a taster, not a PADI course, so you do not leave with a certificate. Lunch, soft drinks, water and marine park fees are covered, as are hotel pickup and drop-off.
- 6
After breakfast you check out and your driver takes you to Hurghada Airport, a drive of around an hour. Leave yourself time for the journey and for check-in when you choose your flight home.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Get used to breathing through the snorkel in shallow water before the Orange Bay swim, and the deeper session will feel easy.
- 02
Let your instructor know straight away if your ears feel blocked, and equalise gently throughout each descent on the dive day.
- 03
Bring a waterproof pouch for your phone on the semi-submarine, as fish drift past the viewing windows at arm's length.
- 04
Put on a long-sleeved swim top for the Dolphin House boat day, because sunlight bouncing off the sea catches you out.

Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if
- Travellers who can swim and would like to try snorkelling and a first scuba dive from a comfortable base in Hurghada. Suits couples, friends and families with older children who are happy on boats.
Maybe not, if
- Non-swimmers, anyone uneasy in open water, and people with a heart condition, asthma or ear problems, or who are pregnant, who cannot do the intro dives. Not for those wanting a full programme on land.
Honest assessment
The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.
Highlights
- Four different reef and boat days in five nights
- Kit, lunches and hotel pickups covered on each trip
- Gentle pacing, with one outing a day and the rest of it free
Things to Consider
- Boat trips depend on weather and sea conditions, and the captain may change a sailing
- No sightseeing on land; this is a week on the water
- Dolphins are wild, so a sighting cannot be promised
Where it fits
A good first Red Sea holiday for beginners who want to try snorkelling and a dive without taking a certification course.
Worth knowing
How this compares
Many Hurghada packages sell a hotel and leave you to add trips one at a time. This holiday fixes four reef days in one booking, with transfers, hotel pickups and the listed kit included. The intro dives are a taster, not a PADI course.

Children & families
Children are welcome on the boat trips and every child has a seat in the vehicle. Hotel and trip prices depend on the child's age and the room used, so we give you the exact figure once you tell us the age at booking. Snorkelling and the intro dives depend on swimming ability, size and health, and the operator confirms the age limits for each trip when you book. Children should stay with an adult on the boats.
Accessibility
Who can join this
All the trips are by boat. You walk along a jetty and step onto a deck, sometimes with a swell running. Snorkelling and diving require you to be able to swim and to get into the water. The semi-submarine has steps down into the hull. Our vehicles are air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access on the boats. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
Each trip uses a motor boat or a minibus, and vehicles vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. The boats, crews and dive instructors are local firms in Hurghada, so much of what you spend stays in the town. Please use reef-safe sun cream, never stand on or touch coral and do not feed the fish. Marine park rules protect the reef, and your guides will go through them.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are airport transfers part of the holiday?
Yes. A driver meets you at Hurghada Airport on day 1 and takes you back there on day 6. International flights are not included.02How full are the days?
After you arrive, each day holds a single outing, and the rest of it is free. Boat days last around eight hours, the semi-submarine trip about three, and days 1 and 6 are for travelling.03Do I have to be able to dive?
No. The dive day is meant for beginners. A certified instructor leads two guided intro dives and all the scuba kit is supplied. It is a taster, not a PADI course, and it does not give you a certificate.04Who should skip the intro dives?
You complete a medical questionnaire beforehand. The dives are not for people with certain conditions, among them heart problems, asthma and ear problems, nor for anyone who is pregnant. The operator confirms the age limits when you book.05Will we definitely see dolphins?
No one can promise it, as they are wild animals. The Dolphin House reef is named after the dolphins that visit, and a sighting is likely at best. The reef is lovely whether or not they appear.06What happens if the sea is rough?
Boats go out only when weather and sea conditions allow, and the captain may change or cancel a sailing for safety. If that happens we help you rearrange, within what our cancellation policy covers.07Is snorkelling kit provided?
Where the trip lists it, yes: snorkelling equipment and life jackets at Orange Bay, mask, snorkel and fins on the Dolphin House trip, and a mask and snorkel for the swim stop on the semi-submarine.08Which hotel will I be in?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotel for your dates. The outings are the same whichever standard you pick.09Will I catch my flight home?
The holiday ends with the transfer to Hurghada Airport, so no internal flight can hold you up. If your flight home leaves from Cairo, that is a separate booking: allow a wide margin or add a night in Cairo. Travel insurance that covers missed connections is wise.
