7-Day Family Holiday: Cairo & Hurghada
Camels at sunset on the night you land, a day with an Egyptologist at the pyramids and museum, then the Red Sea for boats and a beach. The flight, hotels and guiding are arranged for you.
The short answer
7-Day Family Holiday: Cairo & Hurghada is a 7-day, 6-night trip to Cairo and Hurghada: 3 nights in Cairo and 3 in Hurghada. It includes domestic flights, an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transfers. Prices start at £1,061 per person, two sharing (Comfort, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
This week does two things well. The first half is Cairo. You ride camels near the Giza Pyramids at sunset on the day you arrive, then spend a full day with a private Egyptologist at the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Day three is Saqqara and Memphis, with a felucca on the Nile that evening.
After that you fly to Hurghada and the pace changes. One day is a boat out to Paradise Island with a sunbed and optional snorkelling. Another is a semi-submarine and glass-bottom boat over the reef, followed by a quad bike evening with a Bedouin dinner. Egypt Discovery books the internal flight, the transfers and your hotels. You choose the hotel standard, and the plan stays the same.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
7 Days / 6 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Grand Egyptian Museum · Saqqara · Memphis · Nile Felucca
- 1
Our representative greets you at Cairo Airport and drives you to your hotel, around an hour away. Later you are picked up for a sunset camel ride by the Giza Pyramids. Allow about three hours for the outing, with roughly an hour on the camel, a camel for each adult, and tea and bottled water. We time it around your arrival flight.
Then it is back to the hotel for the first of three nights in Cairo.
- 2
This is the big day, around eight hours with a licensed Egyptologist. We collect you from your hotel and head straight to the Giza Plateau for the great pyramids and the Sphinx. Lunch is at a restaurant with a view over the site. The afternoon is at the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the Tutankhamun treasures and the giant statues come alive with a guide to tell the stories.
The guide, entrance fees, vehicle and bottled water are all included.
- 3
A calmer day after the museum. Your private Egyptologist takes you to Saqqara, where Egypt's oldest pyramid stands, and to Memphis, the first capital of the pharaohs. The excursion runs for about five hours in a private air-conditioned car. As evening comes you step aboard a felucca, one of the Nile's traditional sailing boats, and drift along the river while the sun goes down over Cairo.
- 4
Once you have had breakfast, a private car takes you from your Cairo hotel to the airport. The internal flight to Hurghada takes about an hour, and 23 kg of luggage each and taxes are included. Someone meets you at Hurghada Airport and drives you to your hotel. The airline sets the flight time. The rest of the day is yours for the pool or the beach.
- 5
Plan on about eight hours for this boat day. A driver collects you from your hotel and you join a boat shared with other guests for the trip to Paradise Island. On the island there is a sunbed and parasol for you, and a snorkelling guide plus mask, snorkel and fins if you want to swim. Children who prefer to stay dry can play on the sand.
Lunch is served on board with soft drinks and water, and the marine park fees are paid.
- 6
The morning is a three-hour outing that includes two hours aboard a semi-submarine, shared with other guests, so you can watch the reef through its windows. There is also a glass-bottom boat and a swim stop with mask and snorkel. In the evening you are collected again for a five-hour quad bike safari in the desert.
You get a guide and a helmet, a short camel ride at the Bedouin camp, a barbecue dinner and a folklore show. Riders must be 16 or over, though two can share a bike on request. It makes for a full day.
- 7
Have breakfast, check out and a private car takes you from the hotel to Hurghada Airport in about an hour. Your holiday ends at the airport. Give yourselves a generous margin for check-in, and read our answer on onward flights if you are connecting through Cairo.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Cover children's heads and faces on the dusk camel ride at Giza, because wind lifts sand across the plateau as the light fades.
- 02
Take the family to the Grand Staircase and Tutankhamun galleries first at the Grand Egyptian Museum, while everyone is still fresh.
- 03
Insist on trainers, long trousers and a buff or scarf for the quad bikes, as the desert tracks are dusty.
- 04
Bring spare dry clothes and snacks for the little ones on the Paradise Island boat day; the ride back can get cool and breezy.
Tailor it
Make it yours
You choose the hotel standard when you book. Ask about extra nights in Cairo or Hurghada, a night in Cairo before an onward flight, or adding Luxor and a Nile cruise.
Your own specialist deals with each request before you book.
Suited to
Is this for you?
Yes, if

Children & families
Children are very welcome, and the week has been put together with them in mind. Each child has a seat in the vehicles. Hotel, flight and excursion prices depend on age, so give us each child's age at booking and we will confirm the exact figure. Quad bikes are for riders aged 16 and over. Younger children can miss that evening, and two people can share one bike on request. We check with the handler how younger children ride on the camel before the day.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Walking at Giza and Saqqara means sand, uneven ground and little shade, and the camel, the felucca and the boats all involve getting on and off with a step or two. The Grand Egyptian Museum is very large and there is a lot of walking inside. Our vehicles are private and air-conditioned. For the quad bikes, a rider needs to be able to balance, grip the handlebars and wear a helmet. We cannot promise wheelchair access at every stop, so tell us what you need when you book and we will say frankly what will work.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The week has one internal flight, private road transfers and several boat and quad bike outings, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Egyptologists, drivers and boat crews are local, which means much of the money you spend stays in Cairo and Hurghada. On the reef, please do not touch or stand on the coral, use a sunscreen that is gentle on marine life and carry a refillable water bottle.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Is the internal flight to Hurghada included?
Yes. We book the Cairo to Hurghada flight on day 4, including 23 kg of luggage and taxes, along with the transfers either side. Your flights to and from the UK are not included.02Is this holiday right for children?
For most families, yes. There is a camel, a felucca on the Nile, a semi-submarine and a beach day. Day 2 lasts about eight hours, so it works best with children who cope well with a long day in the car and on foot.03My child cannot swim. Can we still do the island day?
Yes. Paradise Island has a sandy beach with sunbeds and parasols, and snorkelling is optional. The semi-submarine and glass-bottom boat let everyone see the reef without getting wet.04What is the age limit for the quad bikes?
Riders must be aged 16 or over. Younger children can sit the evening out, or two people can share a bike on request. Tell us the ages in your party and we will advise.05Will I catch my flight home to the UK?
The holiday finishes at Hurghada Airport on day 7, so leave plenty of time if you fly home from there. If you connect via Cairo, remember that internal and international tickets are separate bookings, and a late domestic flight can lose you the connection. Pick a late-evening or overnight international flight, add a night in Cairo with us, and buy travel insurance that covers missed connections.06What do the excursions include?
On day 2 a licensed Egyptologist, Giza and Grand Egyptian Museum entrance fees and lunch. On day 3 a private Egyptologist and car. On day 5 the boat, sunbed, snorkelling kit and lunch. On day 6 a Bedouin dinner.07Which hotels will we be in?
You pick a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we then name your hotels in Cairo and Hurghada for your dates. The sightseeing stays the same at every standard.08What does the price leave out?
Flights to and from Egypt, the visa, tips for guides, drivers and crews, drinks and meals not listed, the inside of the Khufu pyramid and travel insurance.09When should we go?
October to April is the most comfortable for the pyramids. The sea is warm enough for the boat days for much of the year. Cairo can be very hot in summer, so we start sightseeing early.
