12-Day Cairo, Nile Cruise & El Gouna Holiday

Sunset camels at the pyramids, three nights sailing from Aswan to Luxor with a morning at Abu Simbel, then five nights on the Red Sea at El Gouna. The domestic flight, guides and entrance fees are all organised for you.

The short answer

12-Day Cairo, Nile Cruise & El Gouna Holiday is a 12-day, 11-night trip to Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel: 3 nights in Cairo, 3 on a Nile cruise and 5 in El Gouna. Starts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays or Sundays. It includes domestic flights, an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transfers. Prices start at £2,291 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).

02Overview

A first look

The idea is simple: see the great monuments first, then rest by the sea. You spend three nights in Cairo, starting with a camel ride beside the pyramids at sunset, then a full day with the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, and a gentler third day taking in more of the museum and Coptic Cairo. A short flight then takes you to Aswan, where you join your Nile cruise ship for three nights.

On the river you call at Philae, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor Temple, Karnak and the West Bank, and make an early road trip to Abu Simbel from the moored ship. After Luxor you travel by road to El Gouna, a lagoon resort town on the Red Sea about 15 miles north of Hurghada, for five nights with two boat days, a free day and a semi-submarine outing. You choose the standard of hotel and ship when you book; the sightseeing does not change.

Field notes

From our Egyptologists

  1. 01

Take the sunset camel ride on your first evening at Giza, when the pyramids glow and the pace is gentle after your flight.

  2. 02

Aim for the Hanging Church early in Coptic Cairo, when the carved screens and icons can be admired without a crowd.

  3. 03

You reach Abu Simbel from your moored ship, so carry a small bag with water, sun cream and a hat for the morning.

  4. 04

The journey from Luxor to El Gouna is a good chance to rest; keep your swimming things handy for the pool when you arrive.

Tailor it

Make it yours

You choose the standard of hotel and ship when you book. Ask us about extra nights in Cairo or El Gouna, or a different mix of boat trips.

Your own specialist deals with each request before you book.

Suited to

Is this for you?

Yes, if

  • First-time visitors who want Egypt's best-known sights followed by several days of sea and snorkelling. Suits couples, friends and families with older children who are happy with a flight, early starts and some long road time.

Maybe not, if

  • Travellers who need step-free access to every site, or who dislike long road journeys. Day 7 pairs the West Bank with a drive of around 5 to 6 hours.

Honest assessment

The honest pluses and minuses, as our own team sees them after running this trip.

Highlights

  • The pyramids, the Nile temples and Abu Simbel, then five nights of rest by the sea
  • Abu Simbel is part of the cruise, so there is no separate trip to arrange
  • Three boat and reef outings at El Gouna in the final week

Things to Consider

  • An early start for Abu Simbel and a drive of 5 to 6 hours on day 7 after sightseeing
  • Uneven stone, steps and little shade at the major sites
  • Dolphin sightings at Dolphin House are likely but never guaranteed

Where it fits

A good fit for a first long trip to Egypt that finishes on the coast. The road from Luxor to El Gouna is long, so it suits those happy to give up a day to travel for a beach finish.

Worth knowing

How this compares

Many holidays end at the temples. This one adds a Red Sea stay at El Gouna after a Nile cruise that already includes Abu Simbel, with the Cairo to Aswan flight and every transfer booked for you. The standard of hotel and ship is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

  • Swimming costume and a quick-dry towel for the Red Sea days
  • Reef-safe sun cream, SPF 30 or higher
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Refillable water bottle

What to wear

  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees at temples and churches
  • Long trousers for the camel ride
  • A light jacket for evenings on the river and boat decks in winter

Children & families

Children are welcome. Each child has a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Entrance tickets are free under 6 and full price from 6. Hotel and cabin costs depend on the child's age and the room or cabin used, and we give you the exact figure once you tell us the age at booking. The camel ride allows one camel per adult, so please ask us how it works for younger children. Abu Simbel and the drive to El Gouna are long days for little ones, and the boat days involve life jackets and open water.

Accessibility

Who can join this

Cairo, Aswan and Luxor involve plenty of walking on uneven stone, sand and steps, and the tombs in the Valley of the Kings are narrow. Abu Simbel is level ground but has little shade. The cruise ship is boarded by gangway, and the Philae boat and the Orange Bay, Dolphin House and semi-submarine boats all mean stepping aboard from a jetty. Snorkelling requires reasonable comfort in open water. Our vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.

– Responsible travel

How we travel here

This holiday has one internal flight, a Nile cruise ship, private road transfers and several boat trips, and vehicle and boat types vary, so we make no claims about carbon savings. The Red Sea trips visit marine park areas, so we ask guests to keep fins clear of the coral, to leave wildlife alone and to wear reef-safe sun cream. Guiding and transport are arranged through local firms in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and the Hurghada area, so a good share of what you spend stays there.

  • Licensed Egyptologist guides

State-licensed, and people we have worked with for years

  • Fair wages on the ground

Drivers + guides paid above market

  • Site preservation

We follow the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' site rules: marked paths, no touching reliefs

  • Local teams, real help

Our own offices in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, Marsa Alam and Sharm El Sheikh

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Will I make my international flight?
The holiday finishes at Hurghada airport and the only internal flight, from Cairo to Aswan, is on day 4, so the risk of a missed connection is low. Even so, domestic and international tickets are separate bookings. If you must connect through Cairo on the same day, choose a late-evening or night flight, and buy travel insurance that covers missed connections.
  2. 02Is the internal flight included?
Yes. The flight from Cairo to Aswan on day 4 is booked for you and included. Flight times follow the airline's schedule. International flights are not included.
  3. 03How is Abu Simbel fitted into the cruise?
On day 5 the ship stays moored at Aswan while you leave early by road for Abu Simbel. You come back to the ship for lunch and she then sails. Entrance fees for Abu Simbel are included.
  4. 04How long is the road journey from Luxor to El Gouna?
Around 5 to 6 hours in a private air-conditioned car, and it follows your West Bank sightseeing on day 7. It is a long day, so take water and snacks. Combining the two saves you an extra night.
  5. 05Where is El Gouna and how do we get there?
El Gouna is a lagoon resort town on the Red Sea, about 15 miles north of Hurghada. Airport transfers use Hurghada airport and the boat trips collect you in El Gouna.
  6. 06Are we guaranteed to see dolphins at Dolphin House?
No, and nobody can honestly promise it. Wild dolphins often rest at the reef, so sightings are likely, but they vary from day to day. You snorkel with a guide either way.
  7. 07Which hotels and ship do we get?
You pick a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotels and the ship for your dates. The itinerary and the sightseeing are identical at every standard.
  8. 08What is not included?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides, drivers and ship staff, drinks other than those stated, meals not listed (such as lunch on day 3 and on the free day), the Mummies Room at the Egyptian Museum and travel insurance.
  9. 09When is the best time to travel?
October to April is cooler for the temples and comfortable for the sea in most of that period. Summer is very hot in Luxor and Aswan, so days start early.
