The short answer
12-Day Cairo, Nile Cruise & Marsa Alam Holiday is a 12-day, 11-night trip to Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Marsa Alam: 3 nights in Cairo, 3 on a Nile cruise and 5 in Marsa Alam. Starts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays or Sundays. It includes domestic flights, an Egyptologist guide, entrance fees and transfers. Prices start at £2,146 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
The holiday falls into three parts, and each one rests you for the next. Cairo opens it with an evening felucca, the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, followed by a day at Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. An internal flight to Aswan then puts you aboard a Nile cruise ship, and for three nights you travel north to Luxor with the temples coming to you.
The finish is on the Red Sea. A long drive from Luxor brings you to Marsa Alam, a quiet corner of the southern coast, for five nights of boat trips, snorkelling, a national park beach and a night of camels and stars. We book the flights, the transfers, every hotel night and your cabin. You choose the standard of hotel and ship, and we confirm the properties once your dates are set.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
12 Days / 11 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Saqqara · Dahshur · Aswan · Philae Temple
- 1
Our representative greets you in the terminal and takes you to a waiting car for the drive of around an hour into the city. After you have checked in, you go down to the Nile for a felucca ride at sunset, in the traditional wooden sailing boat. That is all that is planned for the day, so you can unwind after the journey and choose your own supper.
- 2
Your Egyptologist and driver pick you up at the hotel for around eight hours of Cairo's best-known sights, with the guide, vehicle, entrance fees and lunch all arranged. You start on the Giza Plateau with the three pyramids and the Sphinx, then drive across the city for lunch with a view.
The afternoon belongs to the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, and a pause for tea or coffee gives you a breather between galleries before the return to your hotel.
- 3
This is the day that shows how Egypt's pyramids developed. Your private English-speaking Egyptologist takes you first to Saqqara and its Step Pyramid, then to Memphis, the old capital, and finally to Dahshur, where the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid rise from the sand. Tickets, bottled water and lunch at a local restaurant are included. Expect about eight hours in total from pick-up to drop-off.
- 4
You are driven to Cairo Airport for the flight of about an hour to Aswan, where a car takes you to the Nile. Sightseeing from here forms your cruise package, and an English-speaking Egyptologist, the entrance fees and the transport are all part of it. You visit the High Dam, see the Unfinished Obelisk left in its quarry, and cross by boat to Philae, the temple of Isis.
In the late afternoon you join the ship, settle into your cabin and dine on board. The airline sets the flight time, so the order of the afternoon may change.
- 5
The ship travels downstream today, with a stop at the Temple of Kom Ombo, a twin temple to the gods Sobek and Horus standing on a bend in the river. Your Egyptologist leads the visit, and the entrance fee and transport are already covered. The rest of the day is yours: the sun deck is the place to watch palms, fields and villages go past. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on board.
- 6
This is the busiest day on the river. With your Egyptologist you go to the Temple of Edfu, then to Luxor Temple, and on to Karnak and its Sacred Lake. After dark you return to Karnak for the Sound and Light Show, a performance lasting two hours, with admission included. Timings depend on where the ship is, and the cruise team will confirm them on board. You spend a final night on the ship.
- 7
Having breakfasted, you leave the ship and go to the West Bank with your Egyptologist. You visit the Valley of the Kings, where your ticket covers three tombs, then Hatshepsut's terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. Your cruise ends here, and a private vehicle drives you east through the desert to the coast.
It is a demanding day, as the sightseeing and the drive sit side by side, so carry water and something to eat. You arrive at your Marsa Alam hotel in the evening.
- 8
An easy first morning on the coast. A shared boat collects you at the hotel and spends around five hours at Marsa Mubarak, a calm bay with seagrass where green turtles often feed. Mask, snorkel and fins come with the trip, together with tea, coffee and bottled water. The turtles are wild, so we cannot promise you will see one, though many people do.
You are free to relax at the hotel for the rest of the day.
- 9
A shared air-conditioned vehicle drives you to the harbour, where you board a shared boat for Samadai, a horseshoe-shaped reef known as the Dolphin House. The outing takes about eight hours. You snorkel inside the lagoon, where spinner dolphins tend to rest by day. The marine park fee, a life jacket, mask, snorkel and fins, and lunch on the boat are included.
A sighting is likely but, with wild dolphins, never guaranteed.
- 10
A day of around nine hours out of the hotel. A shared vehicle drives you into Wadi El Gemal National Park, a landscape of hills, mangroves and open shoreline, and onward to the beach at Sharm El Luli. The water is clear and shallow, so you can swim and snorkel with your guide close by. Lunch is on the beach.
The national park fee, the snorkelling kit and bottled water are all included, and you are back at the hotel in the evening.
- 11
The morning is yours to swim or sleep in. Late in the day a shared vehicle picks you up for around five hours in the desert inland from Marsa Alam. You ride a camel, share a Bedouin dinner with tea and water, and see a sky far darker than the coast allows. It cools quickly after sunset, so wear something warm. The outing is a ride and a meal, and you sleep at your hotel as usual.
- 12
After checking out you are transferred to Marsa Alam Airport for the internal flight to Cairo, which takes about an hour and includes 23 kg of luggage. Your holiday ends on arrival in Cairo. The airline sets the departure time and we confirm it before you travel, so bear it in mind when you book any international flight, and see the answer on connections in the FAQ below.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Enter the Red Pyramid at Dahshur early on; the shaft is steep and low, and it is cooler and quieter before the coaches pull in.
- 02
Slip into the water calmly at Marsa Mubarak and hold back from the turtles, because patient swimmers are rewarded with the longest encounters.
- 03
Bring a fleece for the stargazing night in the desert; once the sun sets it turns surprisingly cold after a warm coastal day.
- 04
Keep fin kicks gentle around the dolphins at Samadai and never chase them; the reef is protected and the boat crew will remind you.

Worth knowing
How this compares
Many itineraries end at Luxor or tack on a resort stay as an afterthought. This one saves five nights for a quiet Red Sea town, with boat trips for turtles and dolphins, once the sightseeing is behind you.

Accessibility
Who can join this
The Cairo and Nile days mean a good deal of walking around big archaeological sites, on uneven stone and sand, with steps and narrow tomb passages, and long open stretches at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings. Boarding the ship, the boat at Philae and the boats at Marsa Alam involves steps and gangways, and getting into and out of the sea from a boat needs some agility. Vehicles are air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access everywhere. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts will suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses internal flights, a Nile cruise ship, boats and road transfers, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Local Egyptologists lead the sightseeing, and we work with suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Marsa Alam, so a good share of your spending stays in those places. The Marsa Alam outings are inside marine and national parks and the fees are included. Please keep clear of coral and turtles, choose reef-safe sun cream and bring a refillable water bottle.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the internal flights included?
Yes. The flight from Cairo to Aswan on day 4 and the flight from Marsa Alam to Cairo on day 12 are both booked for you, with 23 kg of luggage and taxes. International flights are not included.02How long is the journey from Luxor to Marsa Alam?
It is a long journey by road, and it comes after a morning at the West Bank sites. The vehicle is private, air-conditioned and sized to your party. Pack water and snacks, and expect to reach the hotel in the evening.03Can I be sure of catching my flight home?
Not entirely. Internal and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed internal flight on day 12 could make you miss a connection. The holiday ends in Cairo with no spare night, and we recommend one more night there before you fly home. If you must connect on the same day, pick a late-evening or overnight flight, and make sure your travel insurance covers missed connections.04Will we definitely see dolphins and turtles?
No one can promise that, as they are wild animals. Samadai is known for resting dolphins and Marsa Mubarak for feeding turtles, and the crew pick the best spot on the day. Even without them, you still snorkel over a healthy reef.05How good a swimmer do I need to be?
You do not need to be strong, but you should feel at ease in a life jacket with a mask and snorkel. Life jackets are supplied on the Samadai trip. Tell us how confident you are when booking and we will advise on each day.06Which ship and hotels will I stay in?
You pick a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the ship and hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are identical whichever standard you choose.07Does the holiday include Abu Simbel?
No. Abu Simbel is not on this itinerary. If you would like to see it, ask us about a longer holiday.08Is the sightseeing private?
In Cairo, your Egyptologist and driver are yours alone for the Giza day and for Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. On the cruise an Egyptologist guides you, while the ship carries other guests as well. The boat trips and the desert evening at Marsa Alam run in shared boats and vehicles.09What is not included?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides, drivers, boat crew and ship staff, drinks other than those mentioned, meals not listed in the itinerary, the inside of the Khufu pyramid and premium tombs such as Tutankhamun's.
