02Overview
A first look
This holiday gives Egypt the time it deserves. It opens in Cairo with a Nile dinner cruise, followed by a day at the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. You then see the Citadel of Saladin, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and the early pyramids of Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur before flying south.
Aswan brings Philae, a Nubian village, a private motorboat around Elephantine Island and a whole day at Abu Simbel. You then travel by road to Luxor for four nights, taking in Karnak, the West Bank, Dendera and Abydos. Another flight returns you to Cairo for its old treasures, and then comes a night in a simple camp in the White Desert. A day in the Fayoum and a quiet final stretch in Cairo round things off. You choose the standard of hotel, from budget to luxury, and the sightseeing is the same whichever you pick.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
16 Days / 15 Nights · Cairo · Giza · Alexandria · Aswan · Abu Simbel · Kom Ombo
- 1
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel, where you can rest after the flight. In the evening you are collected for a Nile dinner cruise: around two hours on the river with a buffet and a live show, and Cairo's lights along both banks.
- 2
A full day with your Egyptologist, of which the Giza visit takes 4 to 6 hours. You begin on the plateau with the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. After lunch you head to the Grand Egyptian Museum for the Tutankhamun collection and the monumental statues of the Old and New Kingdoms. The guide, entrance fees and vehicle are all part of the price.
- 3
Today holds two visits. First comes the Citadel of Saladin, the hilltop fortress from which Cairo was ruled for centuries. After that you spend around four hours at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, taking in its main exhibition hall and the Royal Mummies Hall, with a set lunch nearby. Your Egyptologist, the entrance fees and the private vehicle are included.
- 4
Today you head south of Cairo to see the earliest pyramids. At Saqqara stands the Step Pyramid of King Djoser. Memphis, Egypt's first capital, has an open-air museum with a colossal statue of Ramses II. At Dahshur you find the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. Guide, entrance fees and vehicle are included; lunch is not, but your guide can recommend a place to stop.
- 5
You are taken to Cairo Airport for the flight to Aswan, and the sightseeing is fitted around the airline's schedule. In Aswan your guide shows you the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and, by boat, Philae Temple on its island, then a Nubian village. Guide, entrance fees and transport are included. Aswan is your base for three nights.
- 6
This is a full day on the road to Abu Simbel, so you set off early. Ramses II had the Great Temple and the smaller temple of Nefertari carved into the cliff, and both were lifted to higher ground in the 1960s as Lake Nasser filled. The entrance fees, an English-speaking guide and transport are included. You are back at your Aswan hotel in the evening.
Lunch is not included, so your guide can suggest a stop.
- 7
A gentler day on the water. Your private motorboat takes you to Elephantine Island, with its ruins and Nubian houses, and on to the Aswan Botanical Garden on Kitchener's Island. The rest of the day is yours, to stroll the corniche or rest before the road to Luxor.
- 8
You travel north from Aswan to Luxor with two stops along the way. The double temple at Kom Ombo is shared by the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus, and sits right on the riverbank. The Temple of Horus at Edfu is among the best-preserved in Egypt. A guide, entrance fees and the vehicle are included, and you reach Luxor for four nights.
- 9
With your Egyptologist you explore Karnak, Egypt's largest temple complex and its forest of columns, then Luxor Temple beside the river. You finish at the Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum. The guide, the entrance fees and transport between the sites are included.
- 10
You cross to the West Bank, where the pharaohs were buried. The stops are the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Queens. It is a full day, mostly in the open air with little shade. Your guide, the entrance fees and the vehicle are included.
- 11
A full day out from Luxor to two temples to the north. Dendera is dedicated to Hathor and has a celebrated zodiac ceiling; Abydos holds the temple of Seti I and was a holy place of Osiris. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with your Egyptologist. Entrance fees are included, as is lunch at a local restaurant and a bottle of water each.
- 12
A transfer takes you to Luxor Airport for the flight to Cairo; the airline sets the times, and the day is built around them. In Cairo you spend about eight hours with your Egyptologist at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Coptic Cairo, Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, with lunch at a local restaurant. Entrance fees to the listed sites are included.
- 13
The two-day White Desert trip starts today. A private vehicle takes you from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, where a local desert driver-guide meets you with a 4x4. You drive across the Black Desert, stop at Crystal Mountain and reach the White Desert in time for sunset among its chalk formations. Lunch and dinner are provided.
The night is spent in a simple camp with a tent, mattress, sleeping bag and blankets, and shared facilities. We confirm the camp arrangements and the final price for the desert part with you before you pay.
- 14
You wake in time for sunrise over the White Desert and have breakfast at the camp. The 4x4 and then your private vehicle bring you back to Cairo and your hotel. The afternoon is free, so you can rest, shop or simply get the sand out of your shoes.
- 15
You spend about ten hours in the Fayoum, a green oasis to the south-west of Cairo. The stops are Lake Qarun, the lakes and waterfalls at Wadi El Rayan and the old waterwheels of Fayoum city. You have a private English-speaking guide and a private vehicle, and lunch at a local restaurant is included. It makes a calm last full day before you fly home.
- 16
After breakfast you check out, and your driver takes you to Cairo International Airport for your flight home. A representative helps with your luggage. Please allow plenty of time before an international departure.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Visit Giza early in the morning for clearer views before heat haze builds over the plateau.
- 02
Luxor Temple is often better in softer late-day light than at midday.
- 03
Carry small cash for drinks and tipping, because neither is included.
- 04
Bahariya roads can feel long, so keep water and a neck pillow in your day bag.
- 05
At Philae, boat timing matters because access depends on the lake transfer schedule.

Accessibility
Who can join this
Expect a good deal of walking around large archaeological sites and in museums, on uneven stone and sand, with steps and some narrow tomb passages. Karnak and Luxor's West Bank have long, open stretches with little shade. The Abu Simbel, Dendera and Abydos, White Desert and Fayoum days involve long drives. The White Desert night is spent in a simple camp with tents and shared facilities, reached by 4x4 over rough ground. We confirm the camp arrangements and the final price for the desert part with you before you pay. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses two internal flights, private road transfers and a 4x4 trip into the desert, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Sightseeing is led by local Egyptologists and organised through local suppliers in Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, the Fayoum and Bahariya, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. In the desert we ask guests to take their litter with them and leave stones and fossils where they are. Please bring a refillable water bottle.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the internal flights included?
Yes. The flight from Cairo to Aswan on day 5 and the one from Luxor to Cairo on day 12 are booked for you and included in the price. International flights are not.02Does this holiday include a Nile cruise?
No, it is a land holiday with a hotel in each place. The journey from Aswan to Luxor is by road on day 8, calling at Kom Ombo and Edfu. Ask us if you would like to add a ship.03Does the holiday include Abu Simbel?
Yes. Day 6 is a full day by road from Aswan, with the guide, entrance fees and transport all included. It begins early and is a long day.04What is the night in the White Desert like?
The camp is simple: a tent, a mattress, a sleeping bag and blankets, with shared facilities. A private vehicle takes you to Bahariya Oasis and a local desert driver-guide then takes you on in a 4x4. Lunch and dinner on day 13 and breakfast on day 14 are included, along with protected-area fees and bottled water. Nights can be cold. We confirm the camp arrangements and the final price for the desert part with you before you pay.05What will we see in the Fayoum?
The Fayoum is a green oasis south-west of Cairo. On day 15 you visit Lake Qarun, the Wadi El Rayan waterfalls and the waterwheels of Fayoum city, with a private guide, a vehicle and lunch.06Why so many nights in Cairo?
Cairo has the most to see, so it gets proper time: four nights at the start, one after Luxor and two after the desert. In between you fly south to Aswan and Luxor.07Will I make my international flight home?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a delayed internal flight could cost you a connection. Here the last internal flight is on day 12 and four more nights in Cairo follow, so there is a very generous margin. If you add flights of your own, buy travel insurance that covers missed connections.08Which hotels will we stay in?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are the same at every standard.09What does the price leave out?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks and meals other than those stated, the inside of the Khufu pyramid and premium tombs such as Tutankhamun's.10When is the best time to travel?
October to April is cooler and the easiest for walking around the sites. Summers are very hot, particularly in Luxor and Aswan, so days begin early. In winter the desert is cold at night.
