02Overview
A first look
This short holiday gives you Cairo's headline sights and a little time by the sea. Two days are spent with an Egyptologist. The first takes in the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The second covers Islamic and Coptic Cairo, including the Citadel, the great mosques and the Hanging Church.
Once the day 3 tour is over you fly on to Hurghada, on the Red Sea. The next day you take a boat to Orange Bay on Giftun Island for snorkelling and lunch on the beach. A flight on day 5 returns you to Cairo for a final night. We organise both internal flights, every transfer and your hotels. You pick the standard of hotel when you book; the sightseeing is the same whichever you choose.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
6 Days / 5 Nights · Cairo · Giza · Old Cairo · Hurghada · Red Sea
- 1
A driver is waiting in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport to take you to your hotel. Nothing is planned for the rest of the day, so you can rest after the flight and save your energy for the pyramids tomorrow. No meals are included today.
- 2
Your Egyptologist is with you for around eight hours. You begin on the Giza Plateau, at the pyramids and the Great Sphinx, a visit of 4 to 6 hours. After lunch at a restaurant with a view you go on to the Grand Egyptian Museum. Guide, entrance fees and an air-conditioned car are included, and you are driven back to your hotel for a second night in Cairo.
- 3
Your private Egyptologist leads a six-hour tour of medieval and Christian Cairo: the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques, then the Citadel of Saladin with the Muhammad Ali Mosque, and finally Old Coptic Cairo, where you see the Hanging Church and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. Lunch is in Old Cairo, and the guide, entrance fees and transport are included.
You are then taken to Cairo Airport for the one-hour flight to Hurghada and driven to your hotel. The airline decides the flight time, and the tour is planned around it.
- 4
You are collected from your hotel and taken by motorboat to Orange Bay on Giftun Island. Two guided snorkelling sessions are included, with equipment and life jackets, and you have a sunbed on the beach in between. A hot lunch and bottled water are provided, and the boat brings you back to Hurghada and your hotel.
- 5
After breakfast a transfer takes you to Hurghada Airport for the one-hour flight to Cairo, at a time the airline sets. You are met and driven to your hotel. Nothing else is planned, so the afternoon and evening are yours. Ending with a night in Cairo is deliberate: it is a safety window should an internal flight run late, so you reach your flight home calmly.
- 6
Check out after breakfast. Your private driver takes you to Cairo Airport for your flight home, and the transfer representative helps with your luggage. The transfer is planned at around ninety minutes, so leave yourself generous time.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Visit Giza early, before stronger sun and heavier traffic on the plateau.
- 02
Wear shoes with grip in Old Cairo, some lanes are uneven and polished.
- 03
Khan El Khalili is usually calmer in late morning than after sunset.
- 04
Bring a rash guard for Hurghada snorkelling, boat departures can feel cool.
- 05
Keep small cash for drinks and small purchases, many stalls prefer it.

How this compares
Many operators sell Cairo and the Red Sea as separate trips. This holiday joins them in six days, with both flights and every transfer booked for you. The standard of hotel is your choice; the sightseeing does not change.

Accessibility
Who can join this
This holiday involves a good deal of walking around large sites, on uneven stone and sand, with steps. The Giza Plateau and the Citadel have long, open stretches with little shade, and the mosques and churches of Islamic and Coptic Cairo have steps and narrow doorways. Boarding the motorboat to Orange Bay involves steps. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses two internal flights, a motorboat and private road transfers, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. Sightseeing is led by local Egyptologists and arranged through local suppliers in Cairo and Hurghada, so much of what you spend stays in the places you visit. We ask guests to bring a refillable water bottle and to avoid touching or standing on coral when snorkelling.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Are the internal flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Hurghada on day 3 and from Hurghada to Cairo on day 5 are booked for you and are included in the price, each with a 23 kg luggage allowance. The airline sets the flight times. International flights are not.02How many nights do we spend in each place?
Two nights in Cairo, two in Hurghada and a final night in Cairo, all in hotels with breakfast.03Which hotels will we have?
You choose a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotels for your dates. The itinerary and sightseeing are identical at every standard.04What does the Hurghada day include?
Day 4 is a boat trip to Orange Bay on Giftun Island, with two guided snorkelling sessions, equipment, life jackets, a beach sunbed, a hot lunch and bottled water.05Does the holiday include Luxor, Aswan or a Nile cruise?
No. This holiday covers Cairo and Hurghada only. If you would like Nile temples, ask us about our holidays that include a Nile cruise.06What is not included?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks other than those stated, dinner every day and lunch on days 1, 5 and 6.07Is day 3 too much?
It is six hours of sightseeing followed by a transfer and a flight. Most guests manage well, and the next day is a gentle one on the water.08When is the best time to go?
October to April is cooler and the most comfortable for sightseeing in Cairo. The Red Sea stays warm enough for swimming for most of the year, and Cairo summers are hot, so days start early.09Will I get my flight home?
Your internal and international flights are separate bookings, so a late internal flight can cost you the connection. We prefer to finish with a night in Cairo for that reason. If you choose to connect on the same day, book a late-evening or night departure, and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.
