The short answer
6-Day Family Holiday in Cairo & Luxor is a 6-day, 5-night trip to Cairo and Luxor: 3 nights in Cairo and 2 in Luxor. It includes domestic flights, an Egyptologist guide and transfers. Prices start at £1,058 per person, two sharing (Essential, October–April).
02Overview
A first look
Egypt is easier with children when every day has a treat in it. This holiday pairs the famous sights with things young explorers talk about for years: a camel beside the Pyramids, an evening felucca on the Nile, mummies at the Egyptian Museum and a private motorboat out to Banana Island.
You stay three nights in Cairo and two in Luxor, with one internal flight between them. A friendly English-speaking Egyptologist leads the sightseeing, and tickets and transport are included. We keep Cairo to half days, give Luxor's West Bank a full day and tell you straight that the last morning is busy. You choose the standard of hotel when you book.
What lingers
- 01A half day at the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, including a 20-minute camel ride

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
6 Days / 5 Nights · Cairo · Nile · Giza Plateau · Great Sphinx · Egyptian Museum · Luxor
- 1
A private representative meets you in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and takes you to your hotel, around an hour's drive. Take some time to rest. In the evening you head out for a felucca ride at sunset, drifting along the Nile in a traditional sailing boat while the lights of the city come on. The ride is planned around the time you land, so it fits whatever your flight does.
- 2
You spend a half day on the Giza Plateau with an English-speaking Egyptologist who tells the old stories in a way children enjoy. You see the pyramids and the Great Sphinx up close. Then it is time for the camel: a ride of around 20 minutes, one camel for each rider, with a handler beside you and your guide on hand to help you up and take photographs. Tickets and transport are included.
The rest of the day is yours at the hotel.
- 3
Today is a half day at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, led by your Egyptologist. You pass statues, coffins and treasures from thousands of years ago, and your ticket covers the Mummies Room, where preserved kings and queens lie. It may be too much for very small children, so you can decide together at the door. Tickets and transport are included.
You have the afternoon free and a third night in Cairo.
- 4
After breakfast you are driven privately from your Cairo hotel to the airport for the internal flight to Luxor, and met on arrival for the transfer to your hotel. The airline sets the flight time. Later, a private motorboat and boatman take you out on the Nile for about three hours around sunset, to Banana Island.
The island fee is covered, and you are given fresh fruit, mint tea and bottled water.
- 5
This is the longest day of the holiday, with around 6 hours of sightseeing alongside your Egyptologist, so expect an early start before the West Bank heats up. You go into the Valley of the Kings, where tickets for three tombs are included, then on to Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. An air-conditioned vehicle collects you and brings you back.
Pack water and hats, and let the children's energy decide how long you linger.
- 6
The final morning is a busy one. You check out after breakfast and cross to the East Bank with your guide for Karnak, Egypt's largest temple complex, and then Luxor Temple. Tickets and transport are included. You are taken to Luxor Airport for the internal flight to Cairo.
The plan has no hotel night in Cairo because the flight is meant to link with your journey home, so book a late-evening or night departure.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Pack sun hats and plenty of water for the camel ride at Giza, where there is next to no shade at midday.
- 02
Give children a quick preview of the mummies before the Mummies Room, so it feels like an adventure and not a fright.
- 03
Invite each child to choose a favourite tomb in the Valley of the Kings; the painted ceilings are the real draw.
- 04
Bring a cardigan for the evening boat trips on the Nile, as it turns cool soon after sunset.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Each child has a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate whatever their age. Entry tickets are normally free for under-6s and full price from 6. Hotel prices depend on a child's age and the room used, so we give you the exact figure once you tell us the ages at booking. The camel ride is one camel per person with a handler, and your guide helps with mounting. The Mummies Room can upset very small children, so decide on the day whether yours will enjoy it.
Accessibility
Who can join this
This holiday involves a good deal of walking on uneven stone, sand and steps. The Giza Plateau, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak have long, open stretches with little shade, and some tomb passages are narrow and steep. You step down from the bank onto the felucca and the motorboat. Vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Please tell us what you need, and how old your children are, when you book, and we will say honestly which parts suit you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses one internal flight and private road transfers, and vehicle types vary, so we make no claim about carbon savings. The felucca is a sailing boat. Sightseeing is led by local Egyptologists and arranged with local suppliers in Cairo and Luxor, so a good share of your spending stays where you visit. Please bring a refillable water bottle and remind children to keep their hands off the painted walls in tombs. Camels are looked after by local handlers; let your guide know if an animal seems unwell.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Is this holiday right for children?
For most school-age children, yes. The camel, the felucca and the motorboat are easy favourites, and the museum has real mummies. Day 5 on the West Bank is the toughest, with heat and about 6 hours of sightseeing. Tell us the ages when you book.02What do children pay?
Every child has a seat in the vehicle, so transport and guiding are charged at the adult rate at any age. Entry tickets are normally free for under-6s. Hotel prices depend on age and room, and we give you the exact figure when you share the ages.03Is the Mummies Room too scary?
It can be for very small children, as preserved bodies lie in the room. The ticket is included, but you choose at the door whether to go in. Many older children say it was the best part of the museum.04How long is the camel ride?
Around 20 minutes on the Giza Plateau, with one camel per rider and a handler. Your guide helps you mount and takes photographs. If someone would rather not ride, tell us and they can watch.05Are the internal flights included?
Yes. The flights from Cairo to Luxor on day 4 and from Luxor to Cairo on day 6 are booked for you and included, with 23 kg of luggage each. International flights are not.06Will I make my international flight?
Internal and international tickets are separate bookings, so a late domestic flight could make you miss your connection. We would normally suggest a final night in Cairo, but this holiday ends with the Luxor to Cairo flight on day 6. If you connect on the same day, pick a late-evening or night flight home and take travel insurance that covers missed connections.07Which hotels will we stay in?
You pick a standard when you book, from budget to luxury, and we confirm the hotels for your dates. The sightseeing is identical at every standard. It is three nights in Cairo and two in Luxor, with breakfast.08What is not included?
International flights, the Egyptian visa, tips for guides and drivers, meals other than those stated, drinks beyond the water and mint tea on Banana Island, extra tombs and travel insurance.09When is the best time to travel?
October to April is cooler and far easier for children at the sites. Summers are very hot in Luxor, so we begin early and build in breaks.
