02Overview
A first look
Three weeks lets Egypt unfold at a sensible speed. You begin with eight nights around Cairo and Alexandria, which leaves a separate day for Giza, for Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur, for the Egyptian Museum, for the Citadel and Islamic Cairo and for the Mediterranean coast. After that you fly south to Aswan, where there is a felucca at sunset and a long day out to Abu Simbel, before three nights on the Nile heading to Luxor. Luxor gets two more days of its own, including a trip to Dendara and Abydos.
The holiday ends beside the Red Sea. A private road transfer takes you from Luxor to Hurghada for four nights of boat trips, snorkelling and a quad bike safari. A flight back to Cairo and a final night there complete the trip. We book the domestic flights, the transfers, the hotels and your cruise cabin. This 21-day itinerary is arranged at the upper standards only: first-class and luxury.

Day by day
Detailed itinerary
21 Days / 20 Nights · Cairo · Giza Plateau · Saqqara · Alexandria · Fayoum Oasis · Aswan
- 1
A driver is waiting in the arrivals hall at Cairo Airport and drives you to your hotel, where you can rest after the flight. As evening comes you are collected for a dinner cruise on the Nile. It lasts about three hours, with a buffet, a live show and Cairo's lights along both banks, and a private transfer brings you back to the hotel.
- 2
This is a full day with your Egyptologist guide, a private vehicle and the entrance fees already paid. Allow 4 to 6 hours at Giza, where you meet the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. The Egyptian Museum is part of the same day. You sleep in Cairo for a second night.
- 3
Nothing is planned for the morning. After lunch your driver collects you for a half-day tour taking in the Salah El Din Citadel and the Muhammad Ali Mosque, a stroll through Islamic Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. A licensed Egyptologist leads the visit in a private vehicle, with the Citadel and mosque fees included.
- 4
Today is a private journey south of the city to the earliest pyramids. At Saqqara there is the Step Pyramid, at Memphis the remains of the old capital, and at Dahshur the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. Your Egyptologist guide, the vehicle and the entrance fees are all included. These sites are much quieter than Giza, and the ground is sandy and uneven.
- 5
Today you move to the coast for two nights in Alexandria, taking the road that passes the Wadi Natrun monasteries. Lunch is included. The Alexandria sightseeing is spread over today and tomorrow: Pompey's Pillar, the Qaitbay Citadel, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Graeco-Roman Museum. Tickets for all five are included, and so is the drive.
- 6
Because Alexandria's sights are split between today and yesterday, nothing is hurried. The list is Pompey's Pillar, the Qaitbay Citadel by the harbour, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Graeco-Roman Museum. You stay in the same Alexandria hotel again tonight.
- 7
The journey back to Cairo goes through Wadi Natrun again, and the rest of the day has no sightseeing in it. Use the afternoon and evening as you like, before the flight to Aswan two days later.
- 8
This private day out lasts about 10 hours and starts at your Cairo or Giza hotel. The stops are Lake Qarun, the village of Tunis and the lakes and waterfalls at Wadi El Rayan. A driver and an English-speaking guide go with you in an air-conditioned vehicle, and lunch is at a local restaurant. After so many monuments, it makes a gentle change of pace.
- 9
You are driven to Cairo Airport for the flight to Aswan, which is timed by the airline. Another driver meets you at Aswan and takes you to your hotel. Later you step aboard a felucca, one of the Nile's traditional sailing boats, for a ride as the sun goes down.
- 10
Today is a full day by road from Aswan to Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II had his temples cut into the cliff. The vehicle and temple entrance fees are included, and an Egyptologist guide accompanies you. The road is long, and there is little shade at the site. You sleep in your Aswan hotel for a second night.
- 11
This is the day you join your ship for three nights on the Nile, all on full board. Your Egyptologist guide leads you around Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, with transport and entrance fees included. A private motorboat also takes you round Elephantine Island and the Aswan Botanical Garden.
- 12
The ship heads north along the river. Your Egyptologist takes you into the Temple of Kom Ombo and the Temple of Edfu, with fees and transport covered. There is also a Nubian village near Aswan to visit, reached by boat and by vehicle, with bottled water provided.
- 13
With your guide you see Luxor Temple and the Karnak Temples, the Sacred Lake included. Transport and entrance fees are covered. After dark there is the Sound and Light show at Karnak. Tonight is your last on the ship.
- 14
Once breakfast on board is over, your Egyptologist guide takes you across to the West Bank. The day takes in the Valley of the Kings, with three tombs, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. Entrance fees and transport are included. You finish in downtown Luxor at your hotel.
- 15
Your Egyptologist guide drives you out of Luxor to two temples on the Nile's west bank to the north, Dendara and Abydos, in an air-conditioned vehicle. Entrance fees are paid, and lunch at a local restaurant comes with a bottle of water for each guest. It is a full day on the road and on your feet.
- 16
A private, air-conditioned car takes you from Luxor to Hurghada on the Red Sea, a drive of about 5 hours. No sightseeing is planned, so once you have checked in the rest of the day is your own.
- 17
You go out by boat from Hurghada to the Dolphin House reef and have time to snorkel there. We confirm the pickup arrangements and details with you before you travel.
- 18
Your hotel in Hurghada is the starting point for a five-hour quad bike safari led by a guide. Helmets are provided and each rider has a quad, or two can share one if you ask. Along the way there is a short camel ride, a barbecue dinner with soft drinks, tea and water, and a folklore show. You are then taken back to the hotel.
- 19
Today brings a three-hour look at the reef. Part of it is a two-hour semi-submarine trip shared with other guests, with a swim stop where you are given a mask and snorkel. A soft drink and water come with the trip, and so does pickup from your hotel and the return.
- 20
You are taken to Hurghada Airport for the flight to Cairo, which runs to the airline's timetable. On arrival you are met and driven to a half-day visit to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization with a private Egyptologist, including the Royal Mummies gallery where it is open, with a set lunch.
Spending tonight in Cairo is deliberate: it is a safety window in case a domestic flight runs late, before you fly home.
- 21
Breakfast, check-out, then a private transfer to Cairo Airport for your international flight. The drive is planned at about 90 minutes to allow for traffic, and a representative helps with your luggage.

Field notes
From our Egyptologists
- 01
Take flat, grippy shoes to Dahshur; the entry passage into the Red Pyramid is steep and narrow, and it is hot and close inside.
- 02
Alexandria is windier and damper than Cairo, especially in the cooler months, so a showerproof jacket earns its place in your case.
- 03
For the Fayoum trip, pack a scarf or buff against dust, and keep your camera ready for the waterfalls at Wadi El Rayan.
- 04
Carry a fleece for the quad bike evening; the desert chills quickly after dark and the Bedouin dinner is served outdoors.

Children & families
Children are welcome. Each child has a seat in the vehicle, so transport, guiding and meals are charged at the adult rate at every age. Entrance tickets are free for under-6s and full price from 6. Hotel and cabin prices depend on the child's age and the room or cabin used, and we give you the exact figure once you tell us the age when you book. A few activities, the quad bikes and boat trips among them, have their own rules for children, which we check for your child's age before you commit. It is a long holiday with several early starts and long drives, so think about how your child copes.
Accessibility
Who can join this
Expect a great deal of walking on big archaeological sites, over uneven stone and sand, up steps and through some narrow tomb passages. The Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Abu Simbel have long open stretches with very little shade. Getting aboard the Nile ship, the motorboats at Philae and Elephantine Island and the Red Sea boats all involve steps or a gangway. For the quad bike safari you need to be fit enough to ride. The vehicles are private and air-conditioned, but we cannot promise wheelchair access at every site. Tell us what you need when you book and we will say honestly which parts will work for you.
– Responsible travel
How we travel here
The holiday uses two domestic flights, a Nile cruise ship, boat trips, a quad bike safari and long private road transfers, so we make no claim to save carbon. Guides, hotels and ground services come from local suppliers in Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan, Luxor and Hurghada, which keeps most of your spending in the places you visit. On the reef, please keep clear of the coral and bring a refillable water bottle. Inside tombs, please do not touch the painted walls.

Asked & answered
Frequent questions
01Which hotel standards can I choose for this holiday?
This 21-day holiday is arranged at the upper standards only: first-class and luxury. We tell you which hotels and which Nile cruise ship are booked for your dates. The sightseeing is identical at both standards.02Are domestic flights part of the price?
Yes. We book and include the flights from Cairo to Aswan on day 9 and from Hurghada to Cairo on day 20. Flights between the UK and Egypt are not included.03Is there a risk of missing my flight home?
Domestic and international tickets are separate bookings, so a late domestic flight could cost you a connection. For that reason the holiday finishes with a night in Cairo on day 20 and leaves day 21 free for the flight home. If you rearrange things to connect on the day you reach Cairo, choose a late-evening or night international flight. Make sure your travel insurance covers missed connections.04How long are we on the Nile cruise ship?
You spend three nights on board, sailing from Aswan to Luxor, on full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner. The other 17 nights are in hotels with breakfast. You join the ship on day 11.05Does the holiday include Abu Simbel?
It does. Day 10 is a full day by road from Aswan, with the vehicle, entrance fees and an Egyptologist guide all included.06How tiring are the days around Alexandria?
You go by road via the Wadi Natrun monasteries and stay two nights, so the sightseeing is shared across two days. The drive back to Cairo on day 7 is the only task that day, and the afternoon and evening are free.07What will I do in Hurghada?
Day 16 is the road transfer with a free afternoon. After that comes a Dolphin House snorkelling trip on day 17, a quad bike safari with a Bedouin dinner on day 18 and a semi-submarine reef trip on day 19. All of them are included.08What is left out of the price?
International flights, the Egypt visa, tips for guides and drivers, drinks beyond those stated, the Khufu pyramid interior and premium tombs, and travel insurance.09When is the best time to travel?
October to April is cooler and far more comfortable at the temples and tombs. In summer Luxor and Aswan can top 40 C, so sightseeing starts early. The Red Sea is pleasant for most of the year.
