Best time to go

October to April generally brings milder daytime conditions; Luxor temperatures can exceed 40°C in summer. An early visit or late-afternoon visit reduces midday heat exposure, while crowd levels and opening hours vary by season and public holidays. Ramadan can affect local schedules, so confirm pickup and temple access times in advance.

  • Discovery Tours Egypt holds a licence to operate as an Egyptian tour operator.
  • A private licensed Egyptologist guide is included.
  • A private vehicle with driver is arranged for hotel or Nile cruise pickup and drop-off.
  • Admission to Luxor Temple is included.
  • The listed exclusions are gratuities, personal expenses, drinks and lunch.

02Overview

A first look

As Luxor’s streets stir around the east bank, the temple’s stone columns and statues bring the city’s older layers into view. Look for the differences between the work associated with Amenhotep III, Tutankhamun and Ramesses II, then trace the route of the ancient avenue towards Karnak Temple. This visit stays with Luxor Temple, rather than trying to fit several monuments into one outing, so there is time to notice carved details and ask questions as you go.

Our licensed Egyptologist puts those details in context, while we arrange the private vehicle, hotel pickup and return. Your driver will bring you back to your Luxor hotel or Nile cruise after the visit.

Background

The facts

Luxor Temple is an ancient Egyptian religious complex on the east bank of the Nile, within the modern city of Luxor. Construction began under Amenhotep III in the 14th century BC; later additions are associated with Tutankhamun and Ramesses II. Its architecture includes courtyards, colonnades and statues.

Karnak Temple lies approximately 2.5 kilometres north of Luxor Temple. The Avenue of Sphinxes connects the two sites and passes through modern Luxor. The avenue was used for religious processions, including those held during the annual Opet festival. Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple are separate archaeological sites; this excursion visits Luxor Temple only.

A private half-day guided excursion, it is arranged by Discovery Tours Egypt, a licensed Egyptian tour operator. A private licensed Egyptologist guide accompanies visitors, and the Luxor Temple entrance ticket is included. Private vehicle pick-up and drop-off are arranged at a Luxor hotel or Nile cruise.

Visitors walk through open-air courtyards and across uneven stone surfaces. Allow time for walking within the temple complex.

Abu Simbel by Plane from Aswan, Day Tour

Abu Simbel lies about 280 km south of Aswan, where the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari face Lake Nasser. This full-day excursion uses a domestic flight of about 40 to 50 minutes each way, followed by a guided visit with an English-speaking Egyptologist. Allow roughly two to three hours at the temples, subject to flight and security timings. The monuments form part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. Compared with the 3.5 to 4-hour road journey each way, flying leaves more of the day for the site. Services are provided by Discovery Tours Egypt, a licensed Egyptian tour operator.

Travel by road from Aswan to Abu Simbel for a visit to the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the adjacent Temple of Nefertari. The Great Temple’s façade is guarded by four seated colossi, each about 20 metres high. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Both temples were relocated in the 1960s to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam. The road route offers views of the desert and Lake Nasser that a flight does not. Abu Simbel entrance fees are included; hotel transfers, lunch and drinks are not included unless your booking confirmation says otherwise.
