02Overview

A first look

Cairo is easiest to understand through what people eat on an ordinary evening. This tour takes you into downtown with a local guide for a run of small stops, rather than one big sit-down meal. You start with koshari, move on to falafel and ful from a street counter with fresh juice, then have something grilled, and finish with Egyptian sweets and mint tea. You are collected from your Cairo or Giza hotel at 18:00 and back by about 22:00. The stops are chosen by the guide on the night, so tell us about any allergies or dietary needs when you book.

Background

The facts

The tour is based in downtown Cairo, the busy commercial centre east of the Nile, where many of the city's best-known koshari shops, cafes and street counters are found.

What to pack & wear

Children & families

Children are welcome and count towards your party size. The dishes are simple and many are mild, which suits most children, but the evening is busy and ends late. Please tell us their ages and any dietary needs when you book.

These fares are a guide, as prices and departure move through the year. Do ask us and we will confirm the fare for the days you have in mind.

Asked & answered

Frequent questions

  1. 01Where does this tour start and finish?
At your hotel in Cairo or Giza. Your driver collects you at 18:00 and brings you back to the same hotel between 21:30 and 22:00.
  2. 02How do I book, and does the price change with group size?
You book online and your place is confirmed straight away. The fare is per person and falls as the party grows, because the vehicle and guide are shared between more of you. The booking page shows the fare for the number of travellers you choose.
  3. 03What food will we eat?
Expect koshari, falafel and ful, fresh juice, grilled kofta or chicken, and Egyptian sweets with mint tea. The exact places and dishes are chosen by the guide on the night, depending on what is good and open.
  4. 04Is it suitable for vegetarians and people with allergies?
Koshari, falafel and ful are all meat-free, so vegetarians eat well. Please tell us about allergies and dietary needs when you book, so the guide can plan the stops. We cannot guarantee a kitchen free of traces of any allergen.
  5. 05Is alcohol included?
No. The tour serves soft drinks, juice and tea. Alcoholic drinks are not included, and most of the places you visit do not serve them.
  6. 06What if I need to cancel?
You are refunded in full if you cancel three or more days before the tour. Between three days and 24 hours before, half the fare is refunded. After that, or if you miss your pick-up, there is no refund.
