Aswan to the Pyramids and back in a day: should you do it?

Travel Guide

Aswan to the Pyramids and back in a day: should you do it?

A 04:00 start, a flight of about an hour and a half and sixteen hours of travel. The honest pros and cons.

Aswan is far from Cairo, nearly a thousand kilometres by river, and most people reach the capital by a separate flight or train. A same-day return trip squeezes the Pyramids into a single long day. It works for some, and not for others.

The day in outline

A private transfer takes you from your hotel or cruise boat to Aswan Airport at around four in the morning. You land in Cairo, where your guide and driver meet you. The morning is spent on the Giza plateau, with the three Pyramids, the viewpoint, the Sphinx and its Valley Temple. After lunch you visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, then head back to the airport.

Why the booking is a request first

The price includes return flights, so the booking depends on seat availability. You request the trip online, we check flight seats for your date, and we then confirm. Nothing is charged until confirmation. If seats are not available, we suggest another date.

The case for it

  • You see the Pyramids without losing a night in Aswan.
  • You travel in private comfort with a guide who handles tickets.
  • The museum and plateau are done in order, with little waiting.
  • It makes sense for people who plan one great day and do not mind fatigue.

The case against it

Sixteen hours is long, and the airport time is wasteful. You will see little of Cairo beyond Giza and the museum. If you can add a night in a Cairo hotel, you get a calmer pace and the chance to see the old city. Families with young children, older travellers and anyone with health concerns should think twice.

What you will and will not see

The tour includes the Giza plateau, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. It does not include Saqqara, Memphis, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo. Those places need another day. If you wish to see them, consider an overnight stay and ask us to quote a longer plan.

Our advice on who should choose it

We suggest this day for travellers who have decided that seeing the Pyramids is a priority and cannot add a night. It also suits those on a short Nile cruise from Aswan. We suggest another plan for families with young children, travellers over seventy-five or anyone with a heart or breathing condition. We are happy to talk through your situation honestly.

Pack a small bag with your passport, a hat, sun cream, a light jacket, snacks and water. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes you can layer. Leave bulky items at your hotel. Eat a good dinner the night before and avoid late nights. Keep your phone charged and your photos backed up, as you may take a great many.

Please send the names on each passport, your hotel or boat in Aswan and any health or mobility needs. Tell us if anyone dislikes flying or struggles with very early starts. We will check flight seats and reply with the details. Nothing is charged before the booking is confirmed.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

What time do I get back to Aswan?
The return flight leaves Cairo in the evening, around seven, and a private transfer takes you to your hotel or boat. Exact times follow the airline's schedule and are confirmed with your booking.
Are the flights included?
Yes. Return economy flights between Aswan and Cairo are part of the trip, along with the transfers, car, guide, lunch and the tickets listed on the trip page.
What if there are no flight seats on my date?
You hear from us straight away, with the closest dates that do have seats. You are not charged until the booking is confirmed.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum included?
Yes. The tour includes the Giza plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum with your Egyptologist guide. Entry inside the pyramids is optional and not included.
Could I fly one way and stay in Cairo instead?
That is often a better plan. It is not this trip, but we can suggest a flight and a Cairo programme. Ask us when you enquire.
