A long layover in Cairo: can you see the Pyramids?

Yes, if the gap between flights is long enough and you can enter Egypt. What you need to check and how the time works.

Cairo is a common stopover, and the Pyramids are only an hour's drive from the airport. That makes a layover visit tempting. It can work well, but only if the timings are generous and the paperwork is in order.

How much time do you need

The tour itself takes about six hours: roughly an hour from the airport to Giza, around three hours at the Plateau and the Sphinx, a short lunch stop and the drive back. On top of that you need time to land, clear passport control and meet your guide, and you must be back at the airport at least three hours before your onward flight. For that reason we suggest about eight hours or more between landing and take-off.

Entry to Egypt

You cannot leave the airport without entering the country. That means you need a valid visa or an entry permission for your nationality. The visa is not part of the tour, so please check the current requirements well before you travel. If you cannot enter Egypt, this tour is not possible.

What the tour covers

Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall after passport control. You drive across Cairo to the Giza Plateau and see the Great Pyramid, Khafre and Menkaure from the panorama point, then the Great Sphinx and its Valley Temple. A light lunch or snack is included if time allows.

  • Private car and driver, and an Egyptologist guide.
  • Entrance to the Giza Plateau included.
  • Not included: visa, gratuities, entry inside the pyramids, camel or horse rides, luggage storage fees.

The honest caveats

Cairo traffic is unpredictable, and a late inbound flight eats into your time. We watch the schedule and adjust the programme, shortening a stop if needed, but we cannot promise to deliver you in time for a flight. If your onward ticket cannot be changed, think carefully about whether the risk is worth taking.

What the walking is like

The visit is gentle. The panorama point gives the classic view of the three pyramids from a short distance, and the walk to the Sphinx and its Valley Temple is on level ground. You do not climb anything or go inside the pyramids. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring a light layer for the airport, which is often cool, as well as a hat for the Plateau. Carry only hand luggage if you can, because storage fees at the airport are not included.

When to go

A layover works best when you land in the morning or around midday and leave in the evening. A late-night arrival leaves little to see, as the site does not stay open after dark. Winter days are cooler and clearer, while summer afternoons are very hot, so ask us whether a sunset-hour visit fits your times. Tell us your flight numbers well in advance so we can plan the day with some margin.

Send us your flight numbers and times, and we will tell you whether the layover is long enough. Open the trip page to start your request.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

How long a layover do I need?
About eight hours or more between landing and your onward departure. Shorter gaps leave too little margin.
Do I need a visa?
You must be able to enter Egypt, which for most nationalities means getting a visa. It is not included in the tour, so please check current rules before you travel.
What about my luggage?
This depends on your ticket. If your bags are checked through, you may leave them with the airline. If not, luggage storage is at your own cost.
Can you guarantee I will make my flight?
No. We plan the timings carefully and aim to be back at the airport three hours before departure, but delays and traffic are outside our control.
What if my flight is delayed?
Tell us as soon as you know. We will adjust the programme, or tell you honestly if the tour is no longer practical.
