Aswan day trips: boats, temples, markets and one very long road

Aswan is slower and greener than Luxor. These are the outings that make the most of it, and how to pick between them.

Aswan sits at the First Cataract, where the Nile runs between granite boulders and green islands. It has a Nubian character that Luxor lacks, and a pace that encourages you to slow down. Day trips here are shorter, with the exception of a few long runs.

Start on the water

A private motorboat trip takes you to Elephantine Island and the Botanical Garden on Kitchener's Island, with a walk through two Nubian villages. It lasts four hours and involves little effort. It is the best first outing, as you learn the layout of the town from the river.

The classic temples and dam

Philae Temple stands on an island and is reached by boat. It is often paired with the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. Kalabsha, also reached by boat from near the High Dam, is a quieter alternative, and its tour includes the Nubian Museum in town.

Longer days by road

Kom Ombo and Edfu lie north of Aswan and make a nine-hour private day, with a return in the afternoon. Abu Simbel is much further south, and the day starts well before dawn, whether you go by road or by plane. Pick one long day and put a rest day around it.

  • Elephantine Island and the Botanical Garden: about 4 hours.
  • Kalabsha and the Nubian Museum: about 5 hours.
  • Kom Ombo and Edfu: about 9 hours.
  • Philae, High Dam and obelisk: a half day.
  • Abu Simbel: a very early start, plus a long journey.

A balanced three days

On day one, take the Elephantine boat trip and relax in the afternoon. On day two, visit Philae and the dam, or Kalabsha. On day three, if you want it, take the long run to Kom Ombo and Edfu or to Abu Simbel. Add a felucca ride at sunset if you have time.

How Aswan differs from Luxor

Luxor concentrates its monuments on two banks. Aswan spreads its pleasures around the water: islands, villages, a dam and temples that were moved. There is less to tick off and more to enjoy at a slow pace. That suits visitors who have already done a lot of temples, and those who like to sit by the river with a cup of tea.

Booking tips

Book the early-morning trips first, as they need a guide and vehicle. Leave one afternoon free for the corniche, the souk or a felucca ride at sunset. Tell us if you have a cruise on either side of your stay, so we can fit pick-ups around your boat. If you are unsure, send us your dates, and we will suggest a balanced plan.

Aswan's sun is strong all year, so a hat, sunglasses and sun cream matter. Wear light, loose clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for temples and villages. Comfortable shoes with grip help on boat landings. Carry a refillable water bottle and a small amount of cash for tips and small purchases.

Aswan rewards a slow rhythm. Whatever you plan, keep one afternoon with nothing booked. Sit on the corniche, wander the souk, or drink hibiscus tea and watch the felucca sails. Visitors who rush through Aswan often say they wish they had stayed longer, and those who linger often leave with the best memories.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Aswan?
Two full days cover the main sights, and three give time for a temple day by road. Add a day if you plan to visit Abu Simbel and want to rest afterwards.
Should I see Philae or Kalabsha?
If you can, see Philae, which is the best known and most picturesque. Kalabsha is a good second temple, or a choice for those who prefer fewer people. Both are reached by boat.
Is Aswan too hot to sightsee?
From May to September, yes, in the middle of the day. Plan for early starts and boat rides. From October to April the weather is far more pleasant.
Are the Aswan boat trips private?
The motorboat trips on our list are private, with a boatman and a guide for your party. They run at your pace and can be adjusted to suit non-swimmers and children.
Can I visit Abu Simbel and Kom Ombo in the same stay?
Yes, but on separate days. Both are long, so leave a gentler day between them.
